[Revell 1/144 Das Boot release has arrived!]

From Jadlam x2 40 year Das Boot Movie release kits arrived today.

Type VII-C kit, nice detail and comes with a movie poster paints glue and brush. Decals for the movie version only but with Revell type VII-Cs in this scale hard to find, I had to get a few. Can’t wait to start but there’s a queue...

On the other front, I picked up a necrotising infection in my finger after a very innocuous looking cut got infected. I was very close to losing to my fingertip and even now (6 years later) have lasting nerve damage and am missing a chunk out of the top of my digit. Did little to improve my modelling or bass playing, but I did end up with a great set of grisly (and gristly) photos to show off to anyone who wants to see them! 

I don’t mind seeing you u boat photos and everyone loves a modelling injury photo

Thanks @ModelMonkey it’s still sore to touch inside my finger if that makes sense....it was more of a deep stab than a slash. 
I really like the Revell u-boats too and might dabble in some ship action. I’ve got a type 7 1/72 in the garage for a summer project.

Next up for this will be paint chipping and 7 colours of rust

Rough coat on the weather deck. Pretty sure the u-boat decks were made of pine rather than teak. I used lifecolor RLM 74 as it’s a greeny dark grey and think is a good base for a weathered deck. Il use a combo of teerfinis 99 and some browns to detail.

Update: 3 coats of blaugrau on the lower portion of the hull below the waterline and between 1 and 3 downward passes above the waterline below the demarcation. Nice tonal effect as a base to represent the salt water draining out the vents.

Demarcation lines masked and I’ll be hand brushing lifecolor Kriegsmarine blaugrau 58-1 III . Hopefully using downward brush strokes it might help replicate the salt water fading across the saddle tanks. The blue on U-81 in the smaller model gives an idea of the shade.

Just caught up with this, nice big project very big boat. My papa always had S-boat models so this has been nice to read through. I am going to try hairspray on my deck next thanks for the tips. Good luck with the rest of this one

@Greg Law I’d never noticed this before, now you’ve mentioned it that’s all I can see. They are really heavy. I wonder if this would be a good skills test with some light sanding.

Thanks @bismarck builder You do get an aftermarket set for this, but this is my first attempt at this kit. While it’s really detailed if you wanted to go to town or even improve the railings which are a tad thick in the moulded plastic the photo etch railings would be a nice addition. I would next time.

For those familiar with the classic film Das Boot, it’s the 40 year anniversary this year of the films release. Set to be released in May in the Revell gift set of U-96 in 1/44 scale. 
What I didn’t know was that U-96 didn’t have a laughing sawfish on its conning tower as depicted in the movie on the patrol Buchheim was aboard, but the snorting bull of Scapa Flow! It did have a Sawfish emblem later but this supposedly was green, not black as in the movie.

This Revell kit comes with a blue sawfish so here goes my practice run to colour test ahead of my 40 year gift set coming...

U-292 was deployed in the Arctic and featured a white/blue/grey scheme. Here I have the tamiya fine white primer base coat and I think it already looks good

Thanks @Greg Law that just gave me the confidence to do it and here is the pre-shading, done by hand and currently in the garage wearing a thin coat of tamiya fine rattle can primer....

Yeah good rings, great idea. I used rubber coated wire but the paper clip idea definitely adds finesse. Drilling holes too, another good tip, I just glued them on and hoped they stayed.
