    Lovely work. I want to have a go at one of these. I recently discovered Ensign Ewart of the Scot’s Greys who took the eagle at Waterloo was born a mile from here and lived in my town. The local museum textile team made 3 accurate replicas of the flag which is a work of art and thinking of starting a campaign for a statue….my 45mm model will need to do.

    Revell Uboat IX C 1:72 Build

    The u-boats, mainly all VII A,B,Cs C/41 that I have researched had wooden decks. I think u-boats used teak and it was coated in a very dark grey anti-fouling paint. This paint would fade during patrols and the wood begin to show through. I’m not sure about other u-boats.

    I really need to get my books out. The metal parts of the decks like hatches etc would rust, but not the deck.

Then again during a war I’m not sure anyone would want a hight vis color on the side of their Vessel.  I will look through some of my pictures to see if In fact life preservers were even mounted on the exterior at all.
    If it were me, and in fact preservers were mounted on a uboat, a muted weathered orange would seem fitting.

    Great work on this one. Enjoying the build and thread. Making me want to get back to my 4 U-boat builds. From my research, red is the correct colour( I used to paint orange too) the life preservers were only put on the conning tower when leaving and entering port, they were removed at sea. I can’t remember where I read this though to direct you. May have been the AMP pages. I will have a check...

    Revell 1:125 VII-A U-33

    With Mrs Valkyrie off out with her pals this evening, I thought I would get a good night at the bench. The Revell U-99 type VII-B is quite close to U-33. The 9 bow vents on U-33 were easy enough to depict using 9 of the 11 on the Revell kit. One filled in each side with the middle 9 opened up.

    The main vents we need to add quite a few.

    Revell 1:125 VII-A U-33

    Build speed for U-33 in 1:125 has been slow while the work on the entire project has been furious in terms of research. Yesterday every shred of information from the U-boat archive in Germany arrived for U-33 and I have been looking at that ever since. 
    While there are so many references and books documenting U-33, most of which I now own, the U-boat archive material should be definitive. The main thing I need to know is what features she had when she was sunk in February 1940 after a large refit the previous winter. One revelation from the U-boat archive is that during this re-fit she got new diesel engines.

     

    Some more interesting details or stories about 33 include she was carrying spies, peace envoys and even a team apparently searching for the Holy Grail! There is also a strong narrative that actually her mission was to sink the Hood or that U-33 was part of a plan to trap a U-boat lured by the presence of the Queen Mary. 
     

    It’s a striking story!

     

    Tomorrow however I think we are ready to begin on drilling the flood vent pattern that U-33 wore.

    Had a couple of days off so managing a bit of bench time. Starting the weathering with rust. Got Ammo oil brush and the Lifecolor rust set so hopefully a real Arctic weathered flaking faded effect can be achieved

    Looks like you have had a couple of RAF Hercules drop in too.

    Hercs were fabulous, showing their age, never seen a green one before, in and out good show. A-4 is staying over after all that...some technical issue. Back tomorrow to see it off
