  1. Great Shots !! Shuttleworth on a nice day is good fun !! ? Where did the P-40 come from ?? :analintruder:

The P-40 was a bit of a surprise to me too. It's from North Weald, apparently and owned by Peter Teichmann (sp?). He's got some other nice toys, if you can call a Spitfire, Hurricane and P-51 toys!

  2. A few more pics from the 03/05/09 Shuttleworth show.

    Gloster Gladiator:

I hope to get the remainder of the pics uploaded over the next week or so.

As I said, there's a fair few pics and walkrounds on my Photobucket Album, which might come in useful.

    Cheers,

    Mark.

  3. Hi,

I've just started uploading the pics into my Photobucket album. I took over 500 pics, so it's taking a while!

Despite incredibly variable lighting conditions, I don't think they came out too badly.

    DH 88 Comet:

I'll post a few more pics in an additional post, so the page doesn't load too slowly.

There are quite a few pics in my Photobucket album here and there are lots of sub-folders to browse too.

    Cheers,

    Mark.

  4. I managed to get a Czechmaster York conversion for £29 and to be honest, I wouldn't pay more. I feel that the interior is somewhat shoddy (I've seen much better, and that includes CMR themselves) and my example had way more than its fair share of holes, some of them pretty big.

I'm guessing the person I bought it from off eBay felt much the same!

  5. Hi, just to prove I do the odd bit of modelling! I only get to sneak in a small amount of modelling at work (I get in a bit early and get a quick fix then, and at lunchtimes and after work) as the hobby room is full of audio projects, including a 32-channel mixing console that takes up rather a lot of room!

I only have rudimentary facilities and I'm having to learn brush-painting again, which is much trickier than I remember!

First up is the excellent ICM 1/72 Bf 109E-4. There's a lot more flash than when I first built one for a Modelling Madness review and a defiite softening of detail. Still, with a bit of work it turns out nicely.

    icm-emil.jpg

I used a mixture of Almark and kit decals and a combination of Lifecolour, Aeromaster and Xtracrylix paints.

This is the Matchbox 1/72 Lysander Mk II (please forgive the truly awful pic!) and is a real favourite of mine. I scratched some cockpit detail and added the landing lights.

    matchbox-lizzie.jpg

Markings are a combination of kit and Modeldecal roundels. codes and flashes. Where would the 1/72 WW2 RAF modeller be without them? Paints are Aeromaster, but I modified their Dark Green somewhat with some brown, as it's way too blue otherwise.

I hope to get some better pics soon.

Currently working on two Revell Fw 190A-8s and five Matchbox Bf 109Es.

    Cheers,

    Mark.

  6. I was told by a fellow SVAS member that she is flyable, but no one wants to do it! A real pig to land, by all accounts: you can't see a damn thing except the nose and the ground just to the side of you. That, and the stall characteristics of the wingtips don't make for a happy experience.

  7. CMR5136.jpg

I got one of those off eBay last year for £29. I'm a bit disappointed with the internal detail, as it's rough to say the least. I'm bloomin' glad I didn't pay more!

I guess I'll be practicing my scratchbuilding skills.......

  8. Off the top of my head, in 1/72 and injection moulded:

Airco DH 2 (Eduard, Pegasus, Revell)

    Airco DH 4 (Airfix)

    Airco DH 5 (Pegasus)

    Airco DH 9 (Pegasus)

    DH 60 Gypsy Moth (Frog/Novo, A Model)

DH 82 Tiger Moth (Aeroclub, Airfix, Pavla)

DH 88 Comet (Airfix, Frog/Novo. Heritage[ Airfix kit with new decals, resin interior and vac canopy])

    DH 89 Dragon Rapide (Airfix/Heller)

DH 98 Mosquito (Airfix, Matchbox [if you want the two-stage variants. It's basic, but with some work etc, etc] and Tamiya)

    DH 100 Vampire (Airfix/Heller)

DH 103 Hornet (Frog/Novo, Special Hobby)

    DH Sea Hornet (Special Hobby)

    DH 110 Sea Vixen (Frog/Novo/Revell, MPM/Xtrakit)

    DH 112 Venom (Aeroclub)

    DH Sea Venom (Frog/Novo/Tasman/Toko)

    DH 114 Heron (Airfix)

HS 125/Dominie (Airfix, Matchbox. It was a DH design, IIRC)

If you're prepared to go down the resin/vacform route:

    Airco DH6 (?)

Airco DH 10 (Andy Pack- I think!)

    DH 60 Moth Major (Choroszy)

    DH 71 Tiger Moth (Dujin???)

DH 80 Puss Moth (Omega. Be warned, it's over £40!!!!!)

DH 83 Fox Moth (Aeroclub, Kiwi Resins)

    DH 84 Dragon (AIM/Rugrat)

    DH 86 Express (AIM/Rugrat)

    DH 90 Dragonfly (Airframe, AIM/Rugrat)

DH 91 Albatross (can't remember the manufacturer, but I desperately want one!)

    DH 93 Don (Dujin)

DH 94 Moth Minor (High Planes)

    DH 95 Flamingo (Magna)

    DH 104 Dove (Rareplanes, Magna)

DH 109 Comet (can't remember exactly, but IIRC at least two companies have done 1/72 kits)

I'm sure there are many more out there which I have either forgotten or don't know about. Some of these kits are rather hard to find and will likely be a bit pricey. I'm quite a fan of De Havillands myself and there's a lot on the list I still don't have.

    Good luck!

    Mark.

  9. Fw 190 D-9.

The Hobby Boss kit isn't too shabby at all, You only get one canopy option though, IIRC.

The Academy kit is clearly based heavily on the newer Hasegawa kit, but with some (supposedly deliberate) errors:

    Pitot tube on wrong wing

    No elevator trim tabs

No small intake on gun deck

    Supercharger intake shape over simplified

The access panel on the underside is the wrong shape. On the Academy kit its's circular, when it should be more of a rounded square.

    Fuselage stiffening plates missing.

The cockpit detail is much better than the Hasegawa kit though.

Oh, and the canopy sprue attachement points are placed in such a way that there's a lot of cleaning up and re-polishing to do once you've managed to remove them without damaging them!

The Hasegawa kit (the newer one, that is) is probably my favourite, even though the cockpit is severely lacking in detail. I think it captures the overall sit better than anything else.

Italeri. Awful! The wing carries through the fuselage, when the fuselage should sit on top of the wing. This error really messes with the overall shape badly.

Tamiya. I find it disappointing. The spinner shape is totally off (despite them including a replacement!) and I'm not convinced about the sit. I'm sure someone mentioned that the wheels might be a bit small, which might account for it. Otherwise, I think it looks a little "clunky".

Airfix: Shapewise, not bad at all. Replacing the canopy with a Squadron vac example makes a big difference. The cooling gills are very clumsy. If you can do something about that, it'll make a big difference.

As far as the Bf 109E goes, the most accurately shaped one I've seen is the ICM kit. This is very heavily based on the Tamiya kit, but corrects the Tamiya kit's short fuselage. The E-3 canopy on my example was unusable (E-4 type is fine) , but anything meant for the Tamiya kit will fit perfectly. Not as sharply moulded as the Tam kit, but looks great when finished.

Tamiya: as I said, the fuselage is a couple of mm too short and seems to be spread across its length. IIRC, this means that any correctly proportioned markings won't sit qite right. It's beautifully tooled though and just falls together.

The Academy kit is a big disappointment. The underwing radiators are crudely shaped and there's something not right about the shape of the engine cowling, particularly around the MG openings. The Hyperscale '109 nuts really don't like this kit.

All this is from memory, but I think I remembered it right!

  10. The bedroom with the pink curtains has the best light and I couldn't be bothered to adjust the pix. They are white, honest! Well, white in a Humbrol sort of way, if you know what I mean...

    peebeep

Oh! I thought that maybe you'd read that article about Luftwaffe BoB bomber formation markings which was in one of the modelling magazines a while back. It would appear that some of the Crashed Enemy Aircraft Reports stated that pink had been used on certain aircraft. I'm not making it up, honest!

  11. Amateurs! :P

    paints1.jpg

just a small selection from the paints from the past stash.

Many of these I bought back in the early eighties, some I was given and the rest I got off eBay.

I still prefer the older paints in terms of coverage and ease of use. Plus the smell immediately takes me back to my childhood. Or maybe that's just the fumes kicking in! :hypnotised:

  12. This build has stalled a bit this week due to Thomas not being very well but I thought a brief update would be in order.

Wings, tailplanes and canopy are on. Canopy masked and wing root joints are filled and part sanded.

    Photos over the weekend hopefully.

@Fatalbert: As far as I am aware there are no surviving parts, which as you say is a real shame.

    Andy

I'm sure I read somewhere that one was buried just inside the perimeter fence at Filton.........

  13. Hi,

I recently acquired my fourth Pavla Messenger for a reasonable price off eBay and decided to get right to it. Having built (and thoroughly enjoyed) their Typhoon ( I like a challenge!), I had some idea of what I was in for.

I managed to find some drawings for a Messenger I off the interweb and it compares pretty favourably with it, apart from a wingspan which is a few mm longer. I haven't checked against published figures as yet, but will do at some point.

I believe that this was one of Pavla's earlier kits, but it still goes together reasonably well. That it, things fit if you make them fit. I had to make a jig to sand the correct dihedral onto the wingroots, something I'll be using a lot more of in future! The fuselage sidewalls needed a lot of thinning down to get the resin cockpit to fit but again. it's not difficult and didn't really take that long. The cockpit opening had to be extended rearwards bey several mm to get the vac canopy to fit, but once done it seemed to match the drawing. The vac canopy is a perfect fit, BTW. Always nice when that happens!

What else? I had to reduce the height of the central fin/rudder as it was much too tall. That's about as far as I've got so far.

I've actually been building this at work, as the hobby room has been stashed away in boxes for a couple of years (although we are working on the hobby room as I type) and although I have limited tools, it certainly makes you creative with what you do have!

Anyway, here's a few (somewhat poor) pics taken with my moblie phone camera:

    messenger1.jpg

    messenger2.jpg

    messenger3.jpg

Oh yes, I forgot to mention! This will be done as G-AKIN, in its fetching red and off-white paint job. This is one of the decal choices provided.

All in all, a nice little kit which is not likely to be done by anybody else.

  14. I really like Lifecolors acrylics. Like all acrylics, they have their idiosyncracies, but once you have it sussed, you should find the smoothest finish of any manufacturer.

Firstly, don't allow alcohol anywhere near it, otherwise it goes all gummy. Really gummy.

I thin with distilled water, (tap water will do) with a drop or two of Liquitex Slo-Dry acrylic retarder added. Thin to the consistency of milk (silvertop to semi-skimmed) rather than by ratio, as i have found the thickness of the paint as supplied varies.

Lifecolour isn't too keen on being the first coat on, but it is possible. If you mist the first coat on, you'll probably find it pools in places or even runs a bit. Don't panic! It self-levels really well. Let it dry and then continue. You should end up with a durable, smooth finish.

For brush-painting, try thinning with water with a little washing-up liquid added. It's best to do several, thin coats than try to lump it all on in one go.

Some of the colours are a bit suspect "as suggested", but they have a big range and I'm sure you'll find what you need in there.

That said, I heartily recommend WEM Colourcoats as well. Quite probably the best company I've ever dealt with and their colour research is second to none, IMHO.
