  1. 2001 just blew me away .... and got me hooked in to special effects in cinema. I'm an avid collector of Cinefex, got almost every issue including the very first edition. I'm definitely old school in terms of special effects. Yes, CGI can be photo realistic as in Avatar but you can't beat the ingenuity that goes in to detailed model work and in-camera effects. Awesome. Pete
  2. Got a question about sanding pre-shaded raised panel lines. Assume that I've painted the raised lines black, then covered the model with the top coat ... and then I gently sand the raised panel lines ... wouldn't the sanding revel the original colour of the plastic and not the black? Am I missing a step somewhere? Thanks Pete
  3. Andy ... Mozzy19 ... sorry guys ... that dreaded four letter word has raised it's ugly head again ... argh. Wish there were more hours in the day Pete
  4. Thank you Vulkanicity ... it's great to be here. Robvulcan ... I've been thinking along the same lines as you (sorry for the pun). I've often wondered whether panel lines on kits are over-scaled or not. As this is my first build for a while I think I will keep things nice and simple and just sand them down a bit. Brianthemodeller ... yeah me too ... i can't wait to see where this build goes as well Cheers Pete
  5. Hi Pete, Thanks for your comments ... thank you everyone for your comments!! Yeah, I agree about the panel lines. I was toying with the idea of sanding them down and re-scribing them again. I've even bought a scribing tool for the job ... it's just having the confidence to do it. Cheers Pete
  6. Andy ... wow ... double wow ... triple wow!! The sound you heard was my jaw hitting the table ... fantastic paintwork!!!! Seems a bit counter-intuitive to paint the bomb bay dark grey first ... but that is such a brilliant idea I'm going to give it a go. Thank you. Pete
  7. Thanks guys, Caleb ... thanks for the photo. Lots of wires!! I haven't thought about building the tank ... hmm, might be interesting to have a go. Andy ... whilst you are in 'great idea' mode ... can I pick your brains (and any one else's brains). Would you glue the roof in place and then spray the bomb bay or do two passes ... spray the ribs then glue the roof, then spray again? How do people paint the cockpit? Do you glue everything in place then spray (then add the decals) or paint the bits separately then glue in place? I think it would be easier to add the decals if it wasn't glued in place. Thanks Pete
  8. Just reading Britain's Cold War Bombers by Tim McLelland. There is a colour photo of a TSR 2 bomb bay with two WE177A weapons in tandem and two WE177B fitted side by side. Pete
  9. This is spooky as I was just about to ask a question on pre-shading. I guess it only really works with recessed panel lines and not raise lines. Pete
  10. Thanks ... I didn't think of adding fuse wire in the bomb bay ... what a great tip. Cheers Pete
  11. Hi gazza I, Thanks ... yes, I'm well chuffed about how well the bomb bay turned out. Hope I don't cock it up when I come to paint it. No, I don't mind at all if you want to use the build as a reference ... but I may take a long time to finish. I have this habit of starting things but never fin .............................. see what I mean. Cheers Pete
  12. This is my first ever work in progress ... the Airfix 1/72 scale Avro Vulcan Mk2. I started this kit earlier in the year and it's been very slow progress ever since. Just lack of time really. The progress so far. The cockpit detail is a bit ... well ... non existent. I haven't done much in the way of super detailing ... not done any in fact. All I've done is to move the seats a bit further apart to add a central console and then to add some card along the edge of the base. I'm just adding some extra bits to give the impression of detail as you won't be able to see much through the canopy anyway. Cockpit seats and some extra card. Mock up of the cockpit area. Bit blurred ... sorry. Will add the joysticks and then paint matt black, then add the decals. The semi-circular bit in white is where the throttle sticks will go. I did have a plan to use fine brass rod for the throttles ... it's just squeezing four sticks into that small space ... The bit I enjoyed doing the most was scratch building the bomb bay from plastic card and bits and pieces. For reference, I browsed the web to find appropriate images of the ribs etc, then made a set of templates. The ribs were cut out and drilled by hand. There are a few extra gaps here and there that I will fill later. I'm well chuffed with the result. View from the outside. View from the inside The roof of the bomb bay is a separate sheet of very thin plastic card bent to shape with narrow strips to give a ribbed effect. It's not glued in place yet. Once painted and weathered a bit it should look the biz. That's it so far ... still lots to do. The build should keep me busy for a while. Thanks for looking. Pete
  13. You probably know this already ... always use a new sharp scalpel blade. I've tried to cut straight edges with a blade that has 'gone off' and the results were not pretty. I've still got the scars to prove it. Pete
  14. Thanks for your comments. Hacker ... great point about the scale. Can't see much at 1/72 scale anyway. I also have a 1/48 scale TSR 2 which would be ideal for extra detailing if and when I get round to building it. John ... funny you should mentioned about the surgical endoscope ... (don't worry, I'm not going to regale a funny medical story). Cheers Pete
  15. Thanks for your replies. I feel I could add more lots more detail ... but I've just seen Mark's signature above and that says it all really ... Too many models, not enough time. Pete
  16. Hi everyone, My first proper post ... so please be gentle with me ... or rough ... or whatever Here goes ... I'm currently building the Airfix 1/72 scale Vulcan and next in line is the 1/72 scale TSR 2. As most people will know, the cockpit detail for both these models is pretty spartan so I'm thinking of adding some extra detail. I'm tempted to buy the after market parts ... in fact I have some PE parts for the TSR 2 cockpit but they look extremely fiddly. With the canopy on and painted any extra detail won't be that visible. My dilemma is ... how much detail to add? I could go the whole 'hog' and add loads of detail but I'm just wondering if I will be wasting my time. I plan to add 'some' to give the impression of extra detail ... use the existing decals ... add some surface texture but not go 'mad' and try to model every switch. I think that probably will be enough for my rusty skill level. Thanks Pete
