  1. Well I finished the Spitfire at the beginning of June and here I am posting it on the last day! Excuses? I made a very simple base for it this week so was waiting for that before taking any pics. One of the completed model - rest will be in the gallery. Thanks for hosting a very busy GB!
  2. Nice choice - an another Russian heli. I have this kit too and feel it can be turned into a cool model with a bit of attention. Good luck!
  3. Rotorhead! OK so this is the spindly piece of resin that hold the rotor blades.... after removal of the excess resin flash! So what now?? Another bit of scratch building - just no need! And to compare with the white metal piece from the Merlin kit...... spot the difference?? The two fuselages glued together plus Azur resin engine painted in basic colours. Merlin kit needs a bit of filler at the base of the tail. Its progress!
  4. ForestFan - apologies for the grilles - no pressure intended. Do what you normally do and it will be fine. I just felt the KP kit needed an enhancement here. The kit plastic is quite thick here so the grilles not as sharp as you might like.
  5. Weekend weather in Scotland - oh well modelling it is! Here we have both kits for comparison with scratch built tailplane in construction - white plastic card with green stretched sprue! Compare both kits again - very elementary cockpit painting Next comparing the Azur kit tailplane with the new scratch built version, primed and a bit of sanding to do - close. And on the closed up fuselage Merlin version with fuselage closed up - scratched IP's and some 'improvement' to the tailplane in progress. Looks 'rugged' but it'll be fine with some paint on I'm sure.
  6. Thanks Col - yes some sort of replacement will be scratched. Pity as the original is well moulded! The Merlin kit parts are very basic and the tailplane will need similar treatment. Good to see you at the next Zoom build night if you can make it
  7. Ok made a start tonight as we had a virtual build-night at our local modelling club - 10 or so of us building kits connected the modellingby Zoom video software in the absence being able to meet up at our usual venue. Works well Any way on with the modelling Not much done as there was too much chat but a start made on the Azur kit And dissapointingly the tailplane is moulded the same for each side - so some scratchbuilding needed... Wondered if I could swap them round in some way but dont think so - have glued three strips of plasticard together - lets sculpt!
  8. OK a bit of progress. All vent holes cut out Which mesh to use????? Tea bag, coffee pot filter, stainless insect gauze or 1mm alu mesh...... Alu mesh wins out as most practical - here glued into place with pva glue, after the superglue got the better of me! Now away to start the Autogyros!
  9. Thanks Pat - yeah something great about autogyros and their early entry to the aviation scene. The Merlin kit looks basic but I am sure can be sanded! into shape! Undercarriage arrangement looks fun though, JP
  10. Thanks Pat. As ever, and like most of us, we have great ideas in our monds for future builds - so you never know! Aeroflot versions were quite smart back in the day and I wouldnt mind doing and Indian AF or DDR version.... see how this one goes first. I have to say to start with, the kit internals positioning seem to be 'intuitive'..... JP
  11. Seeing as this is the Helicopter and Gyrocopter GB I though I would enter with both a helicopter and also an autogryro. And as I have 2 Cierva C30's I might as well build two at once! So we have Merlin Models plastic and white metal kit and Azur plastic and resin kit - building two at once - yeah that will make sense when we have a few different model materials! Also to incorporate into one of the kits will be the Aeroclub engine. I am a big fan of Spanish Civil War aircraft so one will be the Republican machine shown and not sure what the other will be. British civil is a posibility - cant beat the colours from the1930's Obligatory sprue/box shots. Not much to either kit really especially the Merlin version. Its smaller than you might imagine but sure two decent models can be made from what we have here. Comparing the two kits.... staple through the fuselage.... painful! Did I say the Merlin Models kit was basic???? Azur -close up camera shot never looks good. Decal options from Azur. I normally paint the 3 colours on the tail of any SCW aircraft, as its easier than trying to wrapping decals around a tail.... Hoping these kits will be something different. Will be making them alongside my other GB entry the Mil-4 Hound.
  12. Joining in this GB, if I may, with a couple of entries - first being the 1/72 KP Mil-4 Hound. I developed a fondness for this aircraft after a visit to Moscow and a ramp tour around Chernoye re-work facility with two of the beast lying around in a state of dis-repair! Have had the kit a few years and its not a bad shape in my opinion. Uniformly moulded with indented panel lines, possibly a little bit simplified around the numerous vents holes, grilles, ports etc . Will be a well used military example and the decals look OK for a few option plus I have a set from Hi-Life to give a load of other options. From the box... Always keen to crack open a new kit (who isnt?) here we are straight away with some extra work - lets open up the vents in the nose for the engine of which there are 18? On the real aircraft these are very noticeable and the representation on the kit will not do. Its the usual drill each corner then scalpel between and the file with micro-files to get the shape as close as possible. One done 17 to go!! Quite thick plastic which helps with this job but will leave a depth between the outer skin and where the mesh/grille will sit. I notice there is the HobbyBoss version in the GB as well, so an interesting comparison coming up. Any way looking forward to building my first chopper for 40? years.....
  13. Great choice - love the look of the Hound! So much so that I'll be building the KP version - so interesting to compare. Good luck!
  14. Yes put me down for this please. Completed 2 models for Nordic One and have many more ideas - 1/48 Danish F100F and Finnish Lysander on the possibles list
  15. This GB crept up on me ..... yes I'd like to take part - a few choppers in the stash but KP Mil4 and Azur Cierva C30 favourites at this stage. I am presuming Fiesler Stotch is a possible allowable type? - i have a few.....
  16. Decals on Now to find a matte coat that works and the final details
  17. Update - brown sprayed on - using Hataka paints, nice but man they clogged up the airbrush a couple of times, even spraying that small kit. Masking now applied - thats a job that takes longer than you think - everytime! Using a film - Ultra Mask - which is flexible and low tack. See how it performs with green paint later today.
  18. Rich no problem at all - I know myself I am not up on all notifications and I dip in and out of the posts as life allows! Thanks - I do like it too - its different and likewise I am pleased with the small and simple base. Want to use plaster of paris a bit more in future and add some colour to bases which do set off the finished models better. Really enjoyed the Nordic GB and I made the Norfly DC3 too but wanted to do 2 more - Finnish Lysander and Danish F100, but as ever our dreams are bigger than time allows! Anyway the lockdown has meant more time for modelling!
  19. Deliberating about final aircraft to model.... have shortage of suitable blues for the underside, but anyhow the machine is now primed with Tamiya rattle can primer, canopy masked, prop painted and some pre-shading awaiting camo masking - sure you all know how it goes!
  20. Jean Wonky? The build is easy but a few seam lines to tidy up....
  21. Dennis Apologies I should have said - its Xtradecal X72221 BoB 75th Anniversary set - 10 different machines! Looks like a nice sheet. John
  22. Cheers Patrice First spitfire ive built for40+ years and looking forward to The GB
  23. Pat - Ha I bought them for the local Aberdeen Modellers make n take - and like you said the colours the kids painted their models was amazing and totally different from the real colours. I have a few left over still that were added to the stash. Have pics somewhere... Cheers - hoping this is a quick one and then maybe pull out the Italeri 'Beer Truck' spit! Want to do the Buccaneer GB as well. John
  24. Jumping into this GB really just to knock out hopefully a quick build. Bought in quantity (10+!) from HomeBargains a while back for £2.99 each as starter kits (suggestions for use of all those little paint pots and glue??). Spitfire in all guises are understandably well covered in this GB and in general so I am not looking for anything out of the ordinary here as the type is not my area of knowledge either. However I did buy the Xtradecals sheet for the 1a with 9 options - just to decide which one. May research the individual aircraft and pilot stories to get inspiration. Obligatory shots earlier yesterday Progress by close of play ... You cant see much inside....... Any way I like the external painting and finishing stage best, so looking get the fuselage closed up today.
