  1. OK thought I had better tidy up this post despite 18 months(!) passing since last update! Couple of pics in its glossed state using Halford gloss black, before matt coat varnish Glossed prior to decalling Scribed! Wing fence scratched Overall shot - you can just see scratch pitot tubes and wing fences and all decals placed on Dont like the Airfix 727 nose shape but hey ho Tail section with the extended engines
  2. A group build that I think I can hopefully achieve a completion on in time! I have the Academy F-86 in both 1/72 and 1/48 and have plumped for the 1/48 scale machine. I am planning to build a collection of Spanish AF aircraft and this will be my first one, although I have a couple of civil war aircraft on the go. LF Decals purchased to go with the Aademy kit, which will be OOB. I also plan on using Alclad for the first time - so here we go! Some obligatory pics to kick off with. Box art - possibly seen a few times before! Sprues Pilot x 2! Decals - yellow looks a tad lemon coloured Basic reference book which may be of some help - or not! Not many pics on the net of Spanish AF machines. Anyway looking forward to my first 1/48 jet fighter
  3. I would recommend the kit - looks to me like a T28. Font undercarriage is a bit flimsy but other than than coulndt fault it.
  4. Have just completed the Roden T-28B, painted now as a Fennec as remanufactured by Sud Aviation. The inspiration was a sighting of this and 2 other similar machines at Blackbushe in 1978. Painted here with its ferry registration N54612 it was ex Morracan Air Force, with the roundel, serial and flag painted out in a lighter sand colour - look closely and you can see I tried to replicate this. The aircraft was meandering between North Africa and South America - eventually finding its was to Nicargua and ultimately the Sandinista's! It then found its way back to the USA and currently still flies as a warbird in freench AF markings with a Canadian registration - some 63 years after it was first delivered! Any way lets talk about the model - goes together reasonably well and having a large glazed canopy requires me to spend more than 5 minutes on the cockpit! (My usual airliners dont generally have cockpits as models!) First go at homemade seatbelts which turned out well and I also checked what was contained in the cockpit upgrade set and replicated this with some plastic bits to add interest to the cockpit generally. No mods to Fennec status as I was concentrating on the paint scheme to get the desired look. Added 2 ferry fuel tanks and pylons to match the photos I found of it. Registration and serial decals are homemade laser (first time again!) and worked well to my eye. However prop logos were printed on inkjet and turned white when coated with matt varnish! Tamiya acrylics used throughout and Flory wash to give it the grimy look. Here's the pics.
  5. Have at last posted photos of the completed kit - probably too late - busy week! First GB wasnt quite sure how it all works, but think I have the hang of it for the next one. Overall happy enough with the finished result - could go on adding bits and pieces to the kit but where do you stop with a 144 airliner? Nice kit in terms of overall shape and a good finish could be achieved with a wee bit of el;bow grease. Undercarriage was very basic and ideally I should have scratch built this to do the rest of it justice. Weathered the underside and the baggage hatches with Flory wash - again how far do you go with an airliner and at 144 over-weathering could be a problem. Just need to build some nice 1975 era spanish airport passenger steps and tow vehicle now!!
  6. Spantax Coronado Kit: Two Six Convair 990 Coronado Ltd Edition Scale: 1:144 Paint: Tamiya Acrylic - silver, Halfords spray can appliance white Weathering: Flory wash Build Thread http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/234935408-two-six-convair-990-coronado-completed/
  7. Hopefully not too late for this one! Just completed my first GB, the 144 scale - thats my excuse! What to pick? - here was my bundle of floatplanes/amphibians to choose from. Didnt chose any of them - altoughthere are some great aircraft there! Instead went for the diminutive S6B Frog 1/72 - figuring time constraints just now wouldnt allow me to spend the time needed on the others - ie OKB Be-12. Obligatory sprue shots Box art Decals! No research done yet - just think the S6 is a lovely looking machine.
  8. Undercart now on - waiting for glue to to dry! Here is a pic of the aircraft before the undercarriage went on. How do you change the posting title to Complete???
  9. Wow - a month since my last post! Here is the pre-decal shot. Time flies.... Hope to be finished in time for perth this weekend.
  10. Quick update (apologies for the artificial lighting) - the 990 with engines on and primed just about ready for the real painting
  11. Ok - a wee update. Tried using the sanding cloths which kinda polished the surface, but being only acrylic it didn't take long before the grey primer could be seen. So option 2 - strip the paint off! I read on hobbyfanatics.com that something called oxi clean worked well on acrylics. So bought some Vanish oxi clean today at Asda and mixed one scoop with 4 litres warm water 3 mins later and the paint literally washed off with the help of an old toothbrush. Primer left intact - amazing! Apparently works on Tamiya acrylics but not all. Right which gloss black to use? Have a new can of Halfords gloss black spray paint which I will experiment with. Sorry for great long ramble - thought the info might be helpful to someone. JP
  12. Yeah the speed fairings are awesome! Will have some work to detail them up. Whilst its an injection kit it almost has the feel of a vac - happy enough with my efforts so far.
  13. Already looking a bit better than the AZ model Tu-134. I also have the Rus-Air, Fly and Zvezda versions, so I am watching this one. Bit of a fan of ye old Russian 'smoker'!
  14. Like the Ekranoplan, after seeing the preserved example in Moscow. Dont often see the kit for sale either. The Caspian Sea Monster is a similar and suitably named machine used for skimming the waves at high speed with troops and equipment on board - beast!
  15. Two weeks later and we have this...quick photo with my phone Wanted to wait until I had some time to get the fuselage sides carefully joined. I added some small tabs to one side - then when I test-fitted them I realised the plastic was different thicknesses on each half - so the tabs had to be cut off! Any way, here we have a glued fusealge with wings and tail plane, some filliing, some sanding and about to fill again for the usual 'repeat until smooth' routine. Engines are also glued and filled, but they will take some work to get them looking ready for paint.
  16. Ordered a decal from Draw Decal in December and it arrived within about 5 days - and no extra charges applied.
  17. Yes 4 very tidy 737s. Like the Sky Europe colours - sadly no longer to be seen! John
  18. PC2012 I am going to try the T-cut technique - Halfords will be my shop of choice! (what product did you use? Not quite sure why it turned out like that - but as you say it didnt have the really wet look - I was perhaps too tentative, although the aircraft looks well covered. The other option I have is to strip back and start again but I feel that is a lot of hassle. Either way time consuming. What to use when polishing - never tried any of that before just relied on the paint application and Future. Steve - cheers mate.
  19. Jessica Thanks for the advice. I realised in my haste to spray the black (probably the cause of the orange peel!), I had forgotten to put on the fences - I have done a test run on another kit and that simple method seems to work - they are quite small and only on the slat rather than extending onto the wing. I have ones to add to each side engine also. Now for the sanding/smoothing/polishing - if all else fails it'll have to be stripped off!
  20. Picked up the JP at Telford - so following this build. Nice work so far - at least you can see the cockpit when the canopy is on!
  21. Really wanted to get the black paint on - Tamiya gloss acrylic. The testing on an old 707 worked well, but the 727 has come out with the famous 'orange peel' effect! Annoying as the primed kit was really smooooth! Close up Aaargh! I want to use the micromesh cloths for trying to reduce this finish - any tips before I dive in??
  22. Been a coupla weeks since last post. Firstly here is the 727 primed with engines made. The sun is so unforgiving in these photos - if you want to find the defects wait til miday in February when the sun is shining! Drilled out and made landing lights in the wing roots since these photos. Now lets get that black paint on!!
  23. Saturdays progress! Spent a wee while cutting off from the sprue and cleaning up the parts. I guess its to be expected from a limited run of 50, but the parts do need a bit of work (more than I had imagined - as ever). The plastic is quite soft and 'chalky' with a few bumps, blips whatever. Will come up OK with a bit more work. Heres the box of parts. Will be gluing wings, tail plane today and possibly strengthen fuselage as the plastic is thin in areas. Now back to my all black 727....
