Zvezda Il-62 1/144 - Who is not going to the Olympics?
Jpthedog replied to MikeW's topic in Ready for Inspection - Aircraft
Nice result from a nice kit. Cant beat the Aeroflot scheme but I have Interflug decals for mine - just need to get the VC10 finished first! Yes full marks for the airliner collection! -
Rich - great to see people still interested, my tardiness doent deserve it! The silver F-5B will contract with the 3 tone camo of the SRF-5A
-
Ian, Yeah I checked the photos I could find and the 'bump' on the engines is one side only. I guess I better replace my EAA decals too then! Agree, very nice kit. Agree the bulge is correct. The photos and my light priming accentuate the panel lines, which will really fade back once full primer and finish coats are applied - he said! Aye the kit is so nice that you want to buy a few. At least 3 BOAC/BA schemes are worth doing plus a couple of RAF tankers. Will make my 2 Airfix kits to get the 'standards' I guess. Will check up the photos. One thing i should have done was to have made the landing lights more realistic than the oval panels at the front of the fuselage - they seem to show up quite prominently in pictures. Next time! Mike - hope my modelling skills can match your anticipation! Yeah I only bought 1 so far, from Poland - £19 delivered I think - should have bought at least 3! Definately a VC10 year and the kit really captures the shapes well I think.
-
Yeah I will complete them both. The NMF is Metal Extreme - pretty easy to use. Will dirty it up but not too much for the Spanish scheme.
-
Apologies for the non completion (again) of a group build! Progress if anyone is still following this thread: Tip tanks with clear piece added for nav lights - after gluing on the wrong end!! F-5B primed F-5B with its NMF sprayed Close up of the NMF - too shiny!
-
Jeff thanks. Yes mine is a bit iffy on the wingtips, but otherwise sound. I was wondering whether Roden would be bringing us a standard before butchering a perfectly good kit! The Roden East African decals are a little bit 'soft' I thought and the titling itself is too 'fat' - dont want to spoil a great kit build with average decals. Kit looks great with wings and tail on.
-
Cheers Mark - yeah the VC10 seems to everyones favourite airliner - classy!
-
Dont recall one of these on WIP or RFI so heres my effort. Waited for this when it was first runoured and thought that the Airfix and Frog VC10s of 50 years vintage would be awash in ebay! I still have a regular Airfuc VC10 BA and their RAF tanker version and will build both one day but the Roden kit looked to be a quick build. No sprue shots - presumed they have been seen before but what I can say is that there was a suprising amount of flash. No problem but took a while to prepare the main parts for assemebly. But the parts are finely detailed with fine recessed panel lines, so a big leap forward from Airfix. I intend building this out of the box in the East African scheme supplied. Heres some pictures on progress so far Fuselage, tail and engines glues together with reference material to hand Close up of nose with glazing glues in and nose cone stuck on and thin coat of primer. You get window mask for the kit too! RR Conway engines represented quite nicely. Windows again have some flash which isnt helpful! Tail cone needed some filler and 'adjustment'! to get it right! Looks right to me Fuselage seam reasonably prepared and wings showing the fine panel lines Engines baffling a wee bit - bump on one side but not on the other! A bit of work required to tidy these up More to follow - now swithering about getting some BOAC decals!

Rich - cheers - yeah strange with all the ESCI F-5s and double builds F-5A and B's. I think it looks like a simple kit hence the thought why not build 2 at once! I have the 1/48the Kinetic F-5A, but I doubt I would even get the cockpit finished by the end of the GB!
-
It seems like someone beat me to it, but having looked at the stash I decided to build two F5's at once for this GB. Italeri F-5A and Revell boxing F-5B - both are from the same mould though (ESCI?) and both will be spanish AF, the F-5A will be cammo and the 2 seater silver. Both will be OOB as both kits are handily supplied with Spanish AF decals! F5A box F5A colur scheme and decals F5B box Decals Comparison of both sprue sets F5A F5B

Great looking Russian machine and good result with the kit! -
Zvezda Sukhoi Superjet 1/144
Jpthedog replied to Jpthedog's topic in Ready for Inspection - Aircraft
Ha - yeah hadnt considered it looking like the old BA tails. Didnt like them at the time but kinda miss them. The cockpit glazing is my fault - think I will mask off differently next time, but the Revaro decals did go down nicely and are bang-on for size. I got the detail sheet from them which was a waste of money as i didnt use all the stencilling - you really cant see it at 1/144! Cheers all for the kind comments. Looking at the pics I definately need to seal the wings/decals with a matt cote of some desciption -

Cheers Eamonn - I can recommend the both the kit and Revaro decals -
Just completed Zvezda's very nice Sukhoi SSJ Superjet. Finished in the colours of UT Air Express - decals from Revaro of Russia. Simple kit that goes together easily, with minimal filling. Undercarriage is a bit flimsy - but thats expected of a small 1/144 airliner. I left the cabin windows open and then filled them with Humbrol Clearfix - very easy and successful. All out of the box with a small bit of additional detailing at the APU and a couple of extra aerials. Happy with the result overall.

Well I felt that due to missing the deadline, the least i could do was tidy up the thread. 2 sets of aftermarket decals later the end is in sight! -

Not in the habit of saying negative things about products, but I bought the 8A decals as the Nazca ones had a couple of shortcomings in my opinion. Nazca blue is correct to my eye, but the tail decal does not cover the whole tail - so half decal, half paint - nah dont think so. 8A blue is a tad more green and not correct to my eye, also no mexican flags included? There are a few shortcomings with both so I will end up using parts from each - not really what I would call a value for money solution, but hey ho - was hoping for a quick decalling session to complete the kit, see how it turns out. -

Nice glider and a quick build compared to my nearly finished (!) Planet resin 1/48 Sperber Junior which I started last year! Pics will go on the RFI page John -

Plenty time left to finish this project!! All painted and waiting for second lot of decals, this time from 8A in Mexico - wasnt too excited by the Nazca decals that i got. Here are a couple of progress pics Shows the tail sculpted to what i think is a better shape and a wee tail cone addition! The painted model patiently awaiting decals - and engines! -

Cheers Rich - yes a kit of simple parts - grandson says 'did it just click together?' Eh not exactly! The copper rod for the wing strengthens and helps, but with superglue you don't have long to get the wing dihedral sorted. A wee bit more filling and the new fences and I can shoot it with primer - and begin the whole filling/sanding process again! Nazca Aeromexico decals ordered today as the kit ones looked suspect. -

Progress this week Filled some of the imperfections in the resin with Mr Surfacer, drilled through the fuselage and inserted a copper tube support for the wings and today glued on wings and tailplane. Engine exhausts drilled out too. Have decided to remove the small wing fences as they are not complete and are variable in size, spacing etc - will scratch some new ones I think Hope to get all the filling/sanding and priming complete by the weekend. Oh yeah - have ordered new decals too! -

Cheers Rich A lunchtime sesh (the advantages of working from home!) enabled a clean up and sand of the main components. 'Blob' removed as the resin is relatively soft, but nice to work with. Engine exhaust are suspect at the moment, but overall shape isnt too bad and a few bubbles in the resin to fill as expected. Plus got a good idea on decals! -
Hoping to join in this GB and actually complete it with a 1/144 airliner, from the stash. Anyway here are the box contents pics Boxing The kit The decals Resin looks like it needs a bit of cleaning up and sanding and not too many pieces. White metal undercarriage should be fun but looks quite crisp. Have not decided on a colourscheme - probably wont use the kit decals as they look a bit thick and possibly not the sharpest. Some other great choices in the GB to follow too! Cheers John
