  1. Thanks again, both of you and the rest, for the info! :)

    Paramedic,

Some further info for you. KH695 was in the serial batch KH671-KH750 which were P-51Ks. This means that they should have the louvres and an Aeroproducts prop fitted, as per the Freightdog conversion set. As for determining whether it was fitted with shrouded or unshrouded exhausts, you'd be best to find a pic (I'v not found one yet!!) which shows this detail. There is well known pic of several 65 Sqdn aircraft lining up on Peterhead's runway which shows a mix of camo and nmf machines. In my opinion, the lead camouflaged machine has unshrouded exhausts and I will be building my interpretation (the camo pattern is very similar to that on KH695, hence I use the word interpretation as I do not want this to be taken as a statement of fact!) of KH695 with unshrouded exhausts as a result. I would suggest it is up to you which style of exhausts you model.

I hope this of some use to you,

    Mark.

Great info on those Freightdog-stuff, didn´t think of that myself! Though I did know it was a P-51K - as that is the same as Mustang IVa, right?

And I think I have that pic somewhere, maybe it´s even in Osprey´s book on RAF Mustang aces..?

    Great link Hornet133, many thanks!

  2. Wow, what a load of great responses! :) Knew one would get that about Brit Mussies here.. ;)

No Italeri then. Those links are very helpful, will get what I can.

PS How did these guys years back always know exactly where to stand/sit to block out the absolutely crucial detail?

It has struck me as well.. :ike:

There was also an RCAF Mosquito crash-landing on the same airfield on 4th (?) of May. Figured I would do that one as well. My grand father, working as a fireman, was there shortly after. Seeing the crash from the other side of the harbour.

Oh, and of course there will be more Airfix Mustangs! Love the kit! Painted my first in 112. Squadron markings..

  3. Hi,

I want to build this particular Mustang IVa

    RAF105-KH695.jpg

It belly-landed at my home-town Varberg in south-western Sweden (actually at Getterön slightly north of Varberg.) Flown by Flt Lt Graham Pearson, which had been on an escort-mission for Mosquitos. On this day,19th April 1945, after an engine failure the pilot went for Sweden. Appaerently the pilot wasn´t sure whether he was over Sweden or over Denmark so didn´t use the wheels - to damage the aircraft on purpose.

Pearson was sent home after about a week and the aircraft´s radio, instruments, weapons and ammunition were later sent back to the Uk as well but the aircraft was scrapped in Sweden. Some parts being saved for the newly purchased Swedish Mustangs.

Anyways, I love Mustangs in RAF-colours and this seems like a nice project but I cannot find any suitable decals - anyone know if I can
    find any suitable somewhere?

    65. squadron Mustang IVa - YT-E.

  4. Just built that P-51D and I found it really good looking and nice to build. Highly recomended!

And the same for those Airfix Spitfire Mk.I and Mk I/IIa (just an additional sprue and more decals). Something similar to that Bf 109 - all those kits will make you happy in that aspect! :)

  5. Not the best of help but..

..this is one pic from the search "Frantisek´s hurricane": (It is Jan Zumbach in the pic by the way!)

And a mixture of pics and some photos shows black or white/light coloured spinners on 303 Hurricanes.. So maybe black is also an "option"..?

Not too much help but I will see if any of my books shows anything when I get home.. (Am about to build a 303 too..)

  6. You've been building some more recent Matchbox kits then ! Most of them were well known for the trenches used as panel lines, trenches can be seen on the wings of the nice P-47 model posted above. Some had raised panel lines, that in the days were considered the better option. And some had a mix of both, as can be seen again in the P-47 above: trenches on the wings and raised lines on the fuselage.

Regarding accuracy, I never built the P-47 myself but I remember some old magazine I had rated it quite poorly. Personally I'd just built it without worrying about accuracy, you can still use it to practice rescribing the fuselage but for a good P-47 better look elsewhere

I think you´re right, sir! ;) I just thought about my last build (Spitfire IX/XVI) where there were raised panel lines on the wings and half of the fuselage but those hideous trenches on the front of the fuselage.

Thanks for correcting me. Had a look at some of the others (Beaufighter for example) and totally agree with you..

  7. There's better kits out there for not a lot of money.

Gotta agree there.. But if you have it you might as well build it I guess. Or sell it on flea-bay?

I built a couple of old Matchbox-kits the other week and was severly disappointed. Loved them back in the days but they are kinda dated. Raised panel-lines etc.

Though that example above is expertly done so it can be executed beautifully. I guess I just don´t have those skills.. ;)

As for accuracy.. Sorry, don´t know.
