  1. personally , I think it is what Tamiya uses as a flattening agent. I have used the gloss paints right out of the jar with a paint brush with no ill effects. the flat paints(even with a 50/50 mix of thinner) create these little bee-bees and lots of streaks and spots that it doesn't cover. this problem seems to be alleviated when you airbrush it. for brush-painting I use : Pactra A-series acrylics Pollyscale Aeromaster Warbird Acrylics Testors Acryl and even some Liquitex artist acrylics.
  2. ...off the top of my head..... Soviet engines of the period... V-12 inline engines seem to have props that rotate clock-wise when viewed from the front. (backwards) radial engines (5,7 & 14 cylinder) could have props that rotated clock-wise or COUNTER-clockwise depending on the make and model. confusing , huh ???
  3. I`ve always used `coaming' too,.......`combing' is what Bobby Charlton does to hide his bald head!! Glare shield is the part of the upper nose section beyond the windscreen painted in a dark or dull colour to prevent the glare of the sun blinding the pilot. Glare shield can also be used on the metal panels fitted to the side of the fuselage to prevent the glare of the exhausts blinding the pilot at night time. I agree with you there, Tony 100% logical
  4. I can offer instructions and decals from Monogram 6841, it has RB222 no.198 Squadron ~Battle of the Falaise Gap August 1944 TP (in Red) F (in Yellow) Yellow spinner looks like 3 "kill" marks for tanks and 4 for trucks under the canopy on the left. on the right there is a "leaping"tiger. and... JP149 no. 440 Squadron Royal Canadian Air Force October 1945 "PULVERIZER II markings to me look like I8 P Black spinner. yours for the cost of reimbursing packing and postage. note: Large roundels for the upper wing were removed from the sheet-you should be able to replace these.
  5. I think Giorgio N summed it up well. a B&W shot as the only form of evidence is not going to tell you anything about color however, with a bunch of other information it can help you reduce the number of guesses 100% certainty can only be achieved with a physical sample subjected to chemical and other forms of scientific examination and then reproduced exactly with a new batch of paint mixed exactly as the original.
  6. I am looking forward to that La-5FN are you going to do a correct set of decals for Pavel Likholetov's "Za Vaska I Zhoru"? with the correct WHITE markings? I've been wanting to do one of those for a good long while....
  7. here's one... (for 1/72 fighters) http://web.archive.org/web/20130710094409/http://vvs.hobbyvista.com/Markings/Decals/fighters_part01.html another : http://web.archive.org/web/20130710094409/http://vvs.hobbyvista.com/Markings/Decals/fighters_part01.html 1/48 fighters http://web.archive.org/web/20070504192540/http://vvs.hobbyvista.com/Markings/Decals/Aeromaster_48642/index.php http://web.archive.org/web/20130710094420/http://vvs.hobbyvista.com/Markings/Decals/fighters_part03.html http://web.archive.org/web/20130710094426/http://vvs.hobbyvista.com/Markings/Decals/fighters_part04.html http://web.archive.org/web/20130710094430/http://vvs.hobbyvista.com/Markings/Decals/fighters_part05.html 1/72 Il-2 http://web.archive.org/web/20040207085022/http://vvs.hobbyvista.com/Markings/Decals/ilyushin_il2.html http://web.archive.org/web/20070504192540/http://vvs.hobbyvista.com/Markings/Decals/tidecals_il2.php http://web.archive.org/web/20080729003533/http://vvs.hobbyvista.com/Markings/Decals/travers_il2.php
  8. well , I've been beaten to the punch with most of this...... good quality aftermarket decals for VVS-KA subjects of the GPW (1941-1945) are available , but you will have to do some looking around. names include : Superscale (older and not as accurate as newer ones) Microscale " " Aeromaster " " Eagle Strike did a sheet of red stars-various types and sizes M.S.A.P. did one in 1/48 for the Il-2 Textimprim (T.I. decals) also did one sheet in 1/72 His-Air-Dec also did red stars in 1/72 Travers (hard to find outside Russia)(1/72) AML ,Techmod & Tally Ho! (all from the Czech republic and highly recommended ) Datadecals (from Poland for the Trumpeter 1/32 MiG-3) also very good.(I have both 32001 and 32002) MPD did a nice sheet (1/72) for a variety of Soviet and Lend-Lease type for the GPW --very hard to find nowadays. Esci also did (2?) sheets in 1/72 some of it good some of it not so much another option for the Academy 1/72 Il-2 is to remove the 23mm cannon blisters and replace the 23mm cannons with 20mm cannon barrels. the early all-metal Il-2 originally had 20mm ShVAK cannons - later upgraded to 23mm VYa as in the kit. and the camoflage pattern in the in the instructions is bogus as is the use of Dark Green on the early all-metal single seat machine. (all the machines on the decal sheet use Green and Black camo) I was just at Modeling the VVS website yesterday and sadly the decal review section that could have been a great help to you seems to be in that large part that seems to be missing. let me do some digging around -- some of it may still be in the internet archive.
  9. Thanks , Troy ! you fell right into my trap. the re-issued Monogram kit (1/48) has markings for the two seater with RAF roundels and fin flash. I was not able to find an image of it myself.
  10. not Rumanian.....Royal Yugoslavian Air Force.
  11. I have 2 of the Hasegawa 'Razorback' P-47 and 3 of the Tamiya 'Bubbletop' P-47. both kits are excellent , I do not think you will be disappointed in either one. the Tamiya is more expensive and it uses more parts to achieve some of the details. the Hasegawa kit still looks fine and builds easy.
  12. the best Yak-9D in 1/72 is the Dakoplast kit -it is re-boxed under the Modelist and Eastern Express names. as Graham stated the AModel Yak-9U and Yak-9P are also quite good.(better than High Planes)
  13. Thanks, now just have to find a place that does business in American money
  14. what about the La-9 and La-11 shown on the side of the box? are these also 1/48 and when will they be available ?
  15. correct colors are AII Blue , AII Green and AII Black RGB 13-237-255 RGB 128-161-5 RGB 47-48-55
  16. I would like to see an F-7 conversion kit for the Monogram B-24D in 1/48 your 1/72 kit probably costs the same as this kit plus the conversion ?????
  17. if I had to hazard a guess I would say that VH-201 is a Type 10 and VH-21 is a type 17 but, I-16 types in Finnish service is not my field of expertise Types 18,24 and 27 have starboard access doors to the cockpit and a radio hatch in the aft fuselage
  18. Brewster machines were painted in the Tri-color scheme and most were NOT used operationally apparently bad quality control kept most of them out of combat.
  19. the Douglas A-20 Boston (A-20G-10 IIRC ?) switched to ANA 613 Olive Drab that is not as dark or brown as OD 41 (a "greener"OD) so the rest of those built had cammo in ANA 603/612/613 if you can photographically confirm dark green blotches on the leading and trailing edges of the flying surfaces then that aircraft is in the ANA scheme.
  20. looks good . some people have said this is a very difficult kit to build. what do you say?
  21. aren't a historian and archaeologist the same thing ?????? that is unfortunately the result of the two-front color war in the end ...only total confusion
