I always thought it was a light GREY?
No Bill, you're thinking of Hunter undersides again!

-
I'm no expert, or acu-freak like most in this thread, but I gotta be honest - when I look at colour photos of Hunters from the 50s and 60s, the undersides look clearly, unmistakably, GREY!
So I get a bit
when modellers get their knickers in a twist on this issue.Relax Nev, no one's getting their knickers in a twist. At least we haven't got to the ludicrous levels that HS did over the colour of the area behind the P47 Razorback windows or the "Malta Blue" Spitfires!

Yes, I guess if you'd meant the flash you'd have SAID the flash. Looking at the pic, yes this area bounded by the a/g panel, the nose ring & the flash does appear to be painted as opposed to NMF but my comment about the colour to use still stands! Interestingly, in the pic, it's in company with a single seater P1B XG331 which is painted in the same manner.
-
Is this the lightning flash marking? Only got one shot (from the Crowood Aviation series book) & that's in b/w. Paint it as you see fit & let someone prove you wrong!
-
Yes, the Warpaint book has a pic of one of the "Sea Meteors" on board Ilustrious in 1949 - high speed silver finish
-
Basically, there were 2 x FM3's which were fitted with an A frame arrestor hook for carrier ops & painted in the standard FAA colours of EDSG over Sky & served as test machines with 778 squadron. I think the Warpaint book (22) has some more info but that's the gist of it.
Found the book - serial of one was EE337. The EDSG top colour extended nose to root of tail fin, about 1/3 of the way down the fuselage sides. Standard Roundels in 6 positions, side no. 051 aft of the fuselage roundels, fin code FD, serial on base of fin with "Royal Navy" title above it, standard RAF type Meteor fin flash above horizontal planes. If I had a scanner, I would but HTH!

on this basis, I've got about £900 in the loft!

Yep this subject can run & run, in fact I think it has been! According to "Hunter Squadrons of the Royal Air Force" by Richard L Ward, the underside colour changed from HSS to LAG "in about 1966" & "From the date on which any change is officially promulgated, it can be several months or even years before all the aircraft affected by it actually comply, depending upon the urgency of the change & of course, anomolies can always be found - there are quite a few in this book". I always used to assume that toned down (tactical) national markings meant LAG undersides but on the basis of the above thim might not be the case, except, where an a/c went in for the new markings to be applied, might they not have taken the opportunity of painting the LAG if not already done? Or maybe the other way around - an a/c goes in for LAG repaint & tactical markings applied at the same time. So that's cleared that up then.

I think Graham T was being a touch mischievous when he suggested that. The possibility of trying to get an MR.4 from the 1/2 tooling was looked into at the early, but rejected as the number of changes would have meant almost an entirely new kit.
Yes Jonathan's right (my humour
). So now, with the MRA4 scheduled into service in 2012, we can look forward to the Airfix MRA4 in say 2052! I've preorderd from Hannants. -
Well there's no hurry as the RAF probably won't get them for another 10 years anyway!!!!
If at all. I read the other day that, following the current problems with the MR2' in service, the whole MRA4 project may be in jeapordy.
-
"........Internal areas like the bomb bay...are disappointingly sparse" ??
If I read it correctly the reviewer was saying that the inside of the gear & bomb bay doors were sparse. I've now decided not to buy this kit as it doesn't contain parts for the MRA4 - what are Airfix thinking??!!

-
Looks good, am planning to tackle one of these at some point using the Alitaliane conversion (already have it, just need a base kit!). Not sure which is the better of the two sets, the one I have is good in some areas (ejection seats are fabulous) but the nose fuselage sections are very warped indeed and will require serious filling on the underside.
One thing which maybe you wish I'd not mention, the resin LERX on that kit appears to be closer to the 100% one than the 65% LERX which all T10s use - not sure how right the conversion is in this sense, or whether its just my eyes playing tricks!
but I think you may be right! To be honest I just "slavishly" added the part provided in the conversion without checking refs! Too late now.
-
You do remember correctly and with the original kits the springs were provided. They could be made to ping a good couple of feet across a room, although as Ratch has pointed out they need a little adjustment.
peebeep
Ah well, there you go you see, that's why they no longer provide the spring. Something like that could have someone's eye out!

-
Wow nice work on an unusual & rare subject. IIRC (from when my elder brother built this in the 60's), the rocket pods were "spring loaded" to enable the rockets to be fired. Still the case?
-
Two things as matters progress: firstly, I found that the pilots instrument panel & combing fro the Hasegawa base kit are an excellant fit in place of the item supplied in the Heritage Aviation set so I'm using these.
Secondly, the pylons that are unique to the GR5/7/T10/12 & fit on the outrigger farings seem to be "short shot"; the front ends are there but there's no rear. They don't look to have broken but they certainly ain't right! Does anyone perhaps have these parts from the Hasegawa GR5/7 which they won't be using?
-
Wow, I remember thowing that kit together when I was a kid. Don't recall doing all this though!
-
For the 2 x greys scheme you want Dark Camouflage Grey & Dark Sea Grey. Can't recall the Xtracolour nos. but they are available "by name". As regards decals, I'm sure that 617 squadron would be available in either the Xtradecal or Model Alliance ranges. Search Hannants website.

Nice pics. I love shots of Warton as they show residential properties, peoples sheds etc. right up near the runway!
-
Just received this as an ebay purchase & very nice it looks too. As many will know, it's the old Heller kit but with a wealth of coloured etched enhancements, plus an extremely nice pair of resin seats & decals for 4 x FAF machines (2 x D, 2 x N) . However, my knowledge of contempoary French AF colours is sketchy to say the least. Can anyone give me a match for the grey/green camo colours & the cockpit interior (preferably in Xtracolour), plus wheel bay/undercarriage colours?.
This'll look good along side my Eduard Mirage III. Now to look out for the "C" version & just maybe, finsh off the last Heller Mirage kit I started (Mirage IV with Neomega 'pit).
-
Looks beautiful, but it's the "wrong" scale. I love their 1/32 Hunter & this looks similar in quality but I really wish they'd do a 1/48 kit. I've built so many Academy Hunters with more to do but I'm sick of all the hacking required to get a good result with that kit! I know, I know.....

-
I think confusion my have arisen due to confusion with the colours of the pilot's names. I'm sure I read somewhere that these were initially white but changed later to red. Of course, I can't find that reference now..........!
-
Yep red it is.
-
I'm going to be watching this with interest. Good luck!
