Lookin good G, how much does the kit go for? and where to buy from cheapest?
£30 & worth every penny IMHO. The seats are the closest thing to sex I've had whilst building a model - pic to follow (of the seat, not me having sex
). -
I suck at PE! Unfortunately I'm a fan of the kind of highly detailed update sets produced by the likes of Flightpath so I end up wasting most of the etched parts. Bought a "Hold'n'fold" but it didn't help.
-
Graham, are you aware that you can't make a D straight from the box with this kit?
Not until now! Whats the issue? The instructions are pretty clear about what parts go to an "N" & a "D".
-
Killer! One of the OTHER Cold War birdies I relish. You make them look good.
Lessee, what are the notable improvements needed for the Academy kit? Seats? Exhaust cones? Wheels?
In a "nut-shell":
1) Dump the cockpit & use Neomega(?) or Cutting Edge or Aries(?)
2) Remove 3mm from the rear tip of the tail plane bullet fairing
3) Move the horizontal tailplanes 3mm forward (easy to do by just removing this amount from the front ends of their attachent tabs) so their trailing edges are in line with the trailing edge of the fin.
4) Dump the u/c & use the Aries set.
5) If you're feeling really flush, get hold of the Flightpath update set!
Here's one of mine (& not intended to hijack Darius's thread, just to show what can be done with the Flightpath set etc.)

With the Harrier T10 stalled waiting some decent seats, I made a start on this. For those who don't already know, it's the old Heller kit with a shed load of etched & resin parts. The etched parts are prepainted & just glued to the kit plastic parts (after a very small amount of surgery, all of which is clearly pointed out on the instructions). This is the result after no more than 30 mins work after the cockpit base colour coat was dry!

These Eduard prepainted etched parts are an absolute doddle & I will investigate what other sets they provide!
I'm also waiting for delivery of the Skyraider Models PDL-CT pod.

Oooooh look, a plane flying at an air base!
Petrol 28p/litre!!
Once had to visit RAF Lakenheath on business & dealt with a female USAF captain. First & only customer who I ever met in combat fatigues!
-
That's a nice job. This & the Sea Hawk have been winking at me from the pile for a long time now. I really should dig them out.
-
Haven't started mine yet Bill, but good to see someone else doing an early MR1 which is what mine'll be.
-
Bloody hell, Kitech have ripped off the Airfix kit!

-
Nice build but the single seat Gnat really doesn't float my boat. It's kind of a "Hunter Lite"!
-
Someone's bound to chip in but I must confess to having seen absolutely no builds/comments on this kit except for one that suggested the rotor blades were "all wrong" for a Brit Chinook! Surprising that no one seems to have tackled it & posted their experiences.
-
Nice work. I can never get that "painted on" look with my decals!
-
There is a flat blast screen between the cockpits, it is attached to the fixed canopy frame behind the front seat and is level with the frame arch.
Early Harrier GR7 have a clear lens covering the anti collision beacons and the latest ones have green lens covering the beacons although they still flash white.
I think the change of lens colour has something to with the NVG kit that the pilots now use, athough I not 100% on this.
Shaun.
Cheers, not too late for me to add the screen.
-
Nice work. Is there no engine fan in the kit or is it just the angle of the shot?
-
Yes, a good wash is the answer. Some claim that this is not necessary with modern kits as they use less (or a different) release agent but I still wash all mine on the sprue & again before painting.
-
Looking very nice!
You've done a great job so far.
Just a small tip, Harrier T.10's don't normally carry the refueling probe, it very really fitted.
Shaun.
Well there's a thing, 'cos it barely fits the kit!! Ah well, it's on now.

It's looking great Graham, Herculean effort there! I'm glad you stuck with it

Dave Roof, posting here as Leatherneck Decals IIRC, have/used to have vinyl MDC for the AV-8B. It might work for you too. For the glasing you could use a block of clear resin, if you have it, I used that on the Jag GR.1 I built for the GB.

Cheers Hatchet. I've actually used the part that was on the clear sprue, having chopped off the tip of the resin nose & attached it. Just wish I'd done so before painting!!!!

When I built armour a few years back I used this:

God, that A7 is
marvellous!!! -
Quick "Q". What colour are these on the GR7. Looks like green on top, clear below. Is that correct?
One addition "Q". Is there a blast screen between the front & rear cockpits as per the Hawk/Bucc? If so is it infront of the "bridge" or behind?

Well she's starting to look like a T10! The conversion provides markings for 20 squadron but I used decals from the MA sheet as I preferred the 4 squadron markings. I tried to use some of the conv set stencils but they disintegrated in the water! Therefore, I used stencils from the Hasegawa GR7 (I've got the MA stencil sheet for use with the GR7). Note lack of seats & canopy; the conv set seats are not good & the seats in the Hasegawa GR7 kit are just the wrong type! I've ordered a pair of Mk10 seats from AMRAAM but they'll probably take a month to arrive. I've cut the canopy into it's component parts with a view to displaying it open as it simply doesn't fit as a closed unit. This means I'm going to have to add a bit of detail to the rails & frames - it won't be brilliant but hopefully it'll look better with something there, however spurious. I'll have to forgoe any attempt at an MDC for the canopies - that really IS beyond me. Currently trying to add the nose sensor glazing & one or two small details. With a couple of Eduard Mirage 2000 & Airfix Nimrods having just arrived, I need to get this one finished!!

Nice work, the a/c are 1/72?
-
Refs I have seen say it was "1959-60" that the change to EDSG/White came in. The only FAA front line types that bridge that period & that I can think of are the Sea Hawk & Sea Venom & it was common to see front line a/c in the "old" EDSG/Sky scheme after 1960.
-
Wow, that is a really nice set of Buc's.
I have one problem.. where to put them once they're finished.. I have just about run out of space and these are BIG!
Fold the wings!
I've got two built, one with folded & the other unfolded......but then I've got another 3 or 4 in the pile!

Nice. Accurate Armour kit? Built that years ago.
