@Graham T  Ive one waiting in the stash yet to see the light of the model desk so any pointers along the way would be very helpful.

Let me know if the decals turn to dust.  I plan on doing a 603 Squadron bird and bought the AIMS decal set as an option.  I can let you have the decals off that sheet for the non 603 aircraft.  You might need to source roundels though as you have to use the kit ones other than those off the sheet.  Have a look on Hannants site

You can also get the Infiniti etch set there which has an instrument panel though not sure what one does for instruments - Airscale maybe??

Thanks I do rather like the look of the 112 squadron machine.  I was looking at this sheet but at £20 I thought I'd see how the kit decals went on.  If you're willing to part with these markings that would be great - I'll pm you.

  2. Just started this.  Has anybody actually built it themselves.  It seems to go together OK (at least the cockpit does, which is as far as I've got!) but I'm worried about the decals.  There's a large instrument panel decal that I tried to apply but they're incredibly thin (which is good) but this one had enormous amounts of carrier film (that I tried to remove) & curled up as soon as I tried to apply it!  So I'm ending up painting the panel.  I'm just worried that the rest of the decals might be similarly useless!  I also have a question about part A14 which appears to be a hose - oxygen?  The upper location is clear but where does the bottom end go?!

  3. My first "tail dragger" for a while.  Lovely kit but not without issues.  First the cockpit is wonderfully detailed & you have the choice of using precoloured photoetch (requiring you to remove the raised detail on the plastic parts), use the plastic & paint OR use the plastic & decals - I went for the etched parts.  However the framework for the cockpit side walls is VERY delicate & some arrived broken.  I didn't help myself when, with everything painted & assembled, I mounted it where I THOUGHT it should go & joined the fuselage halves.  Then a couple of days later, I came to attach the upper fuselage decking that surrounds the pit to find I had mounted the pit about a cm too far aft!  I'm blaming the poor instructions!  Anyways managed to split the fuselage & remove the cockpit assembly with too much trouble (apart from more damage to the frame which is fortunately hidden now) & refit it correctly.   Apart from that assembly is complicated but aided by superb fit.  Markings are 33 Squadron in 1950/51 during ops over Malaysia.  The decals were disappointing - very matt & seemingly impervious to setting solution.  Quite pleased with how it turned out though.

I've just had some more blades delivered from the same vendor.  Again, I watched the delivery driver on the app.  It told me that the driver was eight stops away but the app showed that he was just entering my road.  He pulled up outside my house, so I opened the door.

He wasn't delivering to me but to my next door neighbour.  I told him that he had a parcel for me as well and it would save him a journey.  He apologised profusely and said that he wasn't allowed to deliver things out of order.  The software used also wouldn't allow him to select things out of order.    He drove off and came back forty minutes later having made a few deliveries to a village five miles away.  Once again, he apologised but it's not really his fault.

    How utterly insane!   :mental:

Don't blame the driver!  Everything is probably app controlled & makes it IMPOSSIBLE for things to be delivered out of order - regardless of whether the properties are nearby or even adjacent.  I used to deliver for Waitrose & often found myself returning to the same street I had visited a couple of hours later!

I have to say, I'm not really a fan of the Navy's twin-boom stuff, but this looks so good I may be swayed to do one.

If I had to criticise one thing, it would be the orange-peel of the paint. Otherwise I think it looks excellent without any weathering.

Not so bad in the flesh - the camera reveals all kinds of blemish!

  6. Working on this at the moment & decided to go for folded wings to save display space.  Fine, the instructions show steps for both options.  Step 7 requires adding H3, 4, 5 & 6 which are the tops & bottoms of the inner wings.  Sprue H is present & shown on the instructions along with the rest of the sprues but no such parts!  The assembly of the OUTER wings is shown in step 11 & requires parts B1, 2, 7 & 8.  Sprue B IS on the parts diagram & shows ALL FOUR parts of the wings including the inner wings which as per what I have already written these should be H3, 4, 5 & 6!  I have NO sprue B!  What I DO HAVE is a sprue K, which contains upper & lower SPREAD wings.  Did Kinetic change something?  Can I safely split the spread wings & assemble them folded?  The hinge plates appear to be present but am I going to encounter problems?t. Anyone else encountered this?

    Interesting build subject.

500 was slightly weathered, with the full viz markings.  My pilot and I were headed to Cat 1 ready to launch when she was shot down.  CV-62 suspended the launch and we all shut down while the CO of VA-115 (next to us on deck) was told to get unstrapped and up to the bridge ASAP.  It was a beautiful weather day....I remember that.

    Cheers

    Great story!

  8. A bit rusty with USN colours & about to start the 1/48 Kinetic A-6E.  The monochrome painting guide is pretty useless with various shades of grey representing, well, various shades of grey!  If I read this right then it's basically FS36320 over 36375?  The only area that I can see as 36327 is the intake & I can't identify ANY area of 33538.  Any help or guidance greatly appreciated!

EDIT I now see that 33538 is yellow so NOT part of the main scheme!.

  9. Just finished my second go at Airfix's sublime Sea Vixen FAW2 (actually 3rd if you count the one I built using the FAW1 conversion that didn't end well & didn't last long on the display shelf!).  OOB apart from a pair of resin seats & a resin airbrake bay - far more detailed than the kit offering but utterly wasted unless you pick the model up!  Decided to go wings spread on this one - the fit is good but not perfect but a little PVA in the gaps, smoothed with a wet finger hid most of it.  Xtracolour paints as usual for me.  I applied the kit markings for XS577 of 899 squadron from HMS Eagle "March 1975" according to Airfix which can't be correct as the Eagle, Sea Vixen & 899 NAS were gone by then!  I also omitted the shark mouth & the flower decals beneath the tailplane (which I believe was some kind of "disbandment commemoration?) as I didn't like them & surely 577 flew without them at an earlier stage.  Anyway, an enjoyable build.

@Graham T  Sword kits generally speaking aren't as straightforward a build as say Airfix, but they fun and involving, good modelling in my eyes.

Their 48th Meteor 14 is nice.

This is such great news, I don't know what to do with myself!

COMPLETELY forgot I've got their NF14 in the cabinet! What a fool!  Yes, not a bad kit!

Starting to look like a Buccaneer now. This one will be displayed with wings folded.

Nice so far.  I built mine wings folded (it's somewhere in Ready for Inspection so I don't hijack your thread).  You'll probably find as I did that you have to do quite a bit of fettling of the pegs onto which the folded portions fit in order to get them to slide down into the correct position/orientation.  You MIGHT find it easier & more convenient to test fit & fettle BEFORE your insert the hinges into the inner wings.  HTH
