  1. Hi all, Ready for painting! Just waiting for some XF-61 to arrive before I crack on... Matt
  2. Nice work. I have this kit in my stash. I prefer later 109's but might give this a go sometime. Looking forward to more progress. Matt
  3. Hi all, Took all afternoon to clean up the joints around where the machine gun segments fit into the wings. I've also sprayed some random green as a primer to check the joints, this has revealed that there's extra work to do, especially around the cowling. The windscreen fits very well, and is superbly clear. I've used masks by a company called New Ware - not heard of them before but they are very good and fit really well. Also visible in the photo above is one section of the Quickboost exhausts. I'm always happy to use bits like this because I am terrible at drilling accurately! Back to work tomorrow (no rest for me) but hopefully afterwards I can spray the yellow wingtips, fuselage band and cowling. Part of me wishes the rudder was also yellow for a bit of colour! Matt
  4. Thanks both! I have some cleaning up to do at the wing roots - fit of the starboard wing was much better than the port. Then it'll be on to adding some of the other separate sections and, I'm sure, more filling and sanding! Matt
  5. Hi all, I've made progress and have been able to get the fuselage and wings assembled over the last few nights. Fit of parts has, for the most part, been good. Not quite up there with Tamiya and Eduard, but not bad either. By far the most time consuming aspect has been eliminating joins, and reinstating panel lines caused by the multipart nature of the fuselage. I've used Superglue as a filler and Tamiya's scriber to restore lost detail. I'll have to tidy a few of these up before I go much further. Anyway, onto some progress pictures! It's not perfect, none of my models are, but it's getting there. Matt
  6. A tiny bit of progress. I've started assembling the cockpit elements in preparation for joining the fuselage sides. At the last minute I decided against using the PE IP for no particular reason other than I fancied giving the decal a go. I figured if it went to pot, I had a Yahu shaped replacement available. All in all, not too bad at all. Matt
  7. Finally managed to get some paint on the outer gear doors. I appreciate its not the most exciting of posts, but it's a momentous moment all the same as it concludes the main painting stage. I can now move onto final weathering and bringing all the parts together. Matt
  8. I haven't used Vallejo's gloss varnish myself but have used the matt version, although admittedly not recently. I'd say the ratio of 75% varnish to 25% thinner sounds like a potential issue. I'd be more inclined to dilute to 50/50 as a minimum, if not more, and then build up a number very thin coats. Matt
  9. Thanks for the information, I actually need H58 for another build. Any suggestions for the fuselage green - Tamiya or Mr Hobby preferably?
  10. Here's tonight's progress. Cockpit painted and weathered. Yes I know the shade of green is questionable, but I prefer them to be a bit lighter if possible. Belts scratchbuilt using HGW buckles. Few touch ups needed on the seat where the chipping is less than ideal... Matt
  11. Thank for that, I've given up with Vallejo's, other than for detail painting, as I just cannot get a finish I'm happy with when spraying. I've got a couple of ish colours, so I'll mix up an appropriate shade when the time comes. Matt
  12. Thank you Rich! Quick question: the SBS sheets suggests FS34096 for the green. The only exact match I can find is by AK Real Colors, however I'd rather stick to Tamiya, or preferably Mr Color. So my question is, what do people suggest, Tamiya XF-58 Olive Green or Mr Hobby RLM71 Dark Green (or something else?) - it's hard to tell from online paint charts. Matt
  13. I agree - I'm surprised Eduard haven't released a 72nd version yet, especially as they've done the Fw190. Matt
  14. I've made a start, although nothing much to get excited about. Cockpit parts have been removed and tidied up. The seat's just dry-fitted here. I'm not going to do much other than paint, weather and apply some belts...apart from the Yahu IP of course. I find these multi-part fuselage's that Hasegawa are so fond of to be a bit of a faff. Based on other builds, attaching the tail parts before joining the halves together seems to be the way to go so I've followed suit. Not too bad, although eliminating the seam will be a challenge. There are a few other gaps here and there that'll need some filling too. Matt
  15. Thanks James, glad to have had you along! Not far to go now! Matt
  16. @vppelt68 I'm looking forward to having you along - think I'll definitely learn a thing or two!
  17. Just so long as you can ignore the fact its an E and not an M!
  18. Thanks for the positive comments! Nice to hear I'm on the right track
  19. Hi all, I'd like to participate in this if I may? I've had a P-40 gathering dust in the stash for ages. I'd been looking for an alternative scheme for this for a while, because the options in the box, including those captured and flown by Japanese forces didn't inspire me. So, the base kit will be this, Hasegawa's 1/48 P-40E. The markings will come from SBS Models "captured fighters in Finnish service" sheet. The aircraft represented on the sheet is actually a P-40M but I'm going to accept the error - my goal this year is to reduce my stash by selling kits I've accumulated and, more drastically, by actually just building them and having fun! Other goodies include a replacement IP from Yahu, resin wheels, also by SBS Models, and some Quickboost exhausts. So, hopefully that all makes sense and fits the groups criteria. I'm hoping to make progress because for the first time in a couple of years, I'm enjoying my modelling again. Matt
  20. Thanks for the comment. The RLM78 was sprayed "as is" and then mottled using a mix lightened with white afterwards. No fancy stuff like pre-shading or black basing, just done freehand and randomly! Matt
  21. I'm nearly there now. Just some small jobs left to do before final assembly and weathering. And finally, those recessed rivets look great with a wash... Matt
  22. Hi all, Started applying decals and a wash and things are looking more Marseille-like already. I've used Ammo's Neutral Brown Panel Line Wash for this. The gloss coat has remained ever so slightly tacky which has made removing the wash more difficult than it normally would be. I'm not over enamoured with the decals either. While they conform to the recessed detail well enough with some Mr Mark Softer, some of the smaller markings are decidedly heavy to my eye. I also noticed that one section of the windscreen should be painted RLM79, although this isn't clear in the instructions. I've removed the masking in preparation for some spraying. Note this side of the fuselage has had no washes yet. All in all, reasonable progress! Matt
  23. You'll be pleased to see I've finally finished the painting and have applied an all over gloss coat to prepare for decals and weathering. Glossy Varnish from Ammo has been my "go to" for all models recently, including the underside of this. For some reason, I just couldn't get a smooth finish so had to switch to Tamiya X-22, which I haven't used for ages, to sort things out. An overnight pause is now required before moving on to decals and washes. Matt
  24. Tonight's progress - white sections painted with a mix of Tamiya XF-2 and XF-19, then an overspray of LifeColor Incinerated White so they blend in with the spinner. And I managed to break the tail wheel leg...grrr. Matt
  25. The RLM79 is pretty much done and I've given it a coat of gloss to seal things in. I've intentionally left the wingtips so I can safely handle the model while painting. I'll fill them in later. The 79 was subtly post shaded using a lightened mix, but barely visible from a distance and under the gloss. Next up is the white fuselage band and cowling behind the spinner. Cheers Matt
