  1. Where are you using Greg, Langley Moor or Chester-le-Street?

I've been to the Langley moor place, they're pretty good, lots of choice and it's cheaper to pay the delivery than hike over there. None left in Chester.

Went into the Sunderland branch for some paint, plenty of Kits around still so will grab a few 1/72 kits (thinking the Stirling and Gibson's Lanc to go with the other one I bought.

Sadly the guy there told me they're closing next Sunday. :raincloud:

  2. Looking good, and I'd be interested to know more about how you did the finish on the P-40 as I have that kit to complete myself!

I painted the camo on and got the decals on. Sealed it all up with Matt Varnish.

Then I used the Humbrol white weathering powder, mixed it up with a bit of water and slapped it on, left it to dry and using a wet bit of old tshirt started to rub it off in random patterns taking away more around moving parts and streaking it in.

They're great things to have the powders, I recommend them.

  3. Went in today (bought a Spitfire Mk.IXc and the Chipmunk) they've not been told anything but there was one party looking at the company over the next few days so who knows.

Fingers crossed, I know they're not everyone's favorite but it'll be a crying shame if they were to go, ordering online is good if you know what you want but I like the impulse buys. Plus unlike Boyes at least they sell their kits with the instructions and decals inside.

  4. So after a few days I can finally say I've completed a model this year, or 3.

All 3 in "flight" Apologies for the harsh light, it is our guaranteed "1 day of summer" 'oop North.

P40 first, the right wing has let me down by flaking a bit. Luckily I can just shrug and say "Well they weren't bothered about keeping them clean"

Side view, I couldn't decide how best to do the whitewash look. I thought about the hairspray method but after the "success" with Humbrol's black weathering powder/decalfix solution I though the white would work better.

Spitfire I made a pigs ear of the props.

    Hurricane.

And finally what I call the "Himmel" look, as that's what a German would think seeing this bearing down (and they were in a Commando comic)

Final thoughts, my first few after returning to aircraft, and smaller scales. These were really an experiment to see what the weathering powders were capable of and also my first attempt to really "batter" an aircraft beyond running a brush around vents and putting a bit silver around the wings.

  5. Not wanting to do much today I decided to take a look at the Airfix club kits. While looking through the Hurricane bits started coming together and I ended up doing the whole thing in one sitting.

It also gave me the chance to play with the new Humbrol weathering powders. I've put it on quite thick but I figured the Russians in 1942 didn't have much time to worry about cleaning their aircraft. The Kit went together with absolutely no problems and the powder is great to work with, although you may finish your model looking like you've spent a shift in a mine.

Off to put the Spit and Tomahawk together and buy a pot of the white powder (um....)

  6. Well I went into the local one here and after picking up the paint I needed and impulse buying the revell A-10 the guy in the store remarked "What're you going to do when we close?" He's understandably worried and after asking him he said there were 6 or so potential buyers including an American firm, the previous owner who in his words "should never have got the money from Lloyds in the first place" and Hornby got a mention. They're going day by day so far.

  7. ...and Metro Centre stores to be at best mediocre and at worst a joke.

If i'm at the Metro Centre I'll pop in but it has to be a waste of a shop, very little selection compared to Newcastle.

The nearest one to me is Sunderland, if that goes I'm stuffed. It's handy when it's the weekend and I can get out and pop over for some paint and usually pick up a little kit to add to the stash. I can't see me doing as much if I'm having to jump on the Metro to Newcastle.

  8. It's not lit up, I wouldn't even know where to start with that. The more I do the less I like it, I may just finish this one and give it to the younger brother (he's becoming a massive trekkie too) and get another one and take more care with it.

As for pictures, it's very much a WIP (why didn't I start a thread!) but here's one with the main assembly done and the registration number on.

  9. I've just bought this and I agree with everything, the fit is brilliant although attaching the saucer to the hull was troublesome, this was due to the lock at the front. Even with this removed the saucer can be attached but I put a few dabs of superglue helps. The Nacelles fit onto the kit even without any tape, it's tight and won't budge. A masking kit is needed, not having the skill or patience to hand make aztec patterns I've sprayed it white all over which looks nice and clean but even with the addition of all the decals for the various phasers and (after seeing Into Darkness i'm assuming) the thruster exhausts on the lower half it does look a bit plain. I'm thinking of giving a wash and making it look more "used".

One main bugging point is the decals for the buzzard collectors, the spinning one's dont look convincing at all. I just wish I realised this BEFORE it was all glued together.

  10. Those replies suggesting that this has been photo - shopped are probably right. If you look at the outside picture you can see that the starboard wing/inner engine image reflected in the rain water has a US Airforce inlet cover (winged).

Not only that but it looks like something's been badly removed from the image, just in front of the engines.

Either that or Captain Kirk is about to materialise.
