  1. I got a full mock up going the other day. The trailer is fully enclosed but for the purposes of seeing if the paring is suitable, this is all that's necessary. The trailer rides flat with the neck resting on the bed. So in order to give the trailer clearance I'll probably have to add 1-2mm raisers to its axles. I do want to double check on a level non carpeted surface but am having trouble finding one lol. Another thing that's caused me to have a think is that the original plan was to have a Nascar in the trailer. However the 1/24 ones don't fit, being too wide for the trailers inner arches. I always thought that transporter trailers had flat floors inside to prevent this in the real world, well maybe they do and this multi scale trailer kit is wrong. The wheels on it are hideous so I'm hoping I have something in the spares box to replace them with. Lots of things to ponder. I've had to get liberal with the filler on the seats for the truck. So far the only parts that have needed any, other than the odd ejector pin. A small update but it's still progress. Got to fix my 1:1 scale at the weekend so not sure how much I'll get done. TTFN Ashley.
  2. Hi Jan. I'm not certain on reference material for the cars after 2000. I have the Klein Rally Cars book but that only goes up to the WRC2000. So in some ways helps as the 2001 was a body update of the 2000 chassis I believe. I also have the Rally Giants book by Graham Robson which isn't great for reference pics, but the info is a good guide. I also have the Rally Yearbooks for the early 2000's and they do have some great pics. You can pick them up used on Amazon for £0.01 plus postage. At least that's how I got them and they're just as good as the more expensive Holmes and Klein annuals in my opinion. Hope that helps and I'll be sure to check out your thread when you start it I have all those Heller kits you mention. Including the ZX Rally Raid too Recently I've brought a few new ones to replace or add to the one's I have built. Just last week I stripped my old dodgy paint job on the Esso Delta S4, luckily I never applied the decals so its all good to go when I get round to it lol. The normal 205 and S4 are very rare now. Wasn't a couple years back when I got mine lol. This kit is a bit weird as yes its the Rally Argentina but the wheels are sort of a mix between the tarmac and gravel designs used back then. Obviously the solid plastic 'tyres' are slick so are wrong even if it was for a tarmac event, but these are nice little kits and a quick destraction from the 1/24 norm.
  3. Thanks guys. No update like I promised as my 1:1 scale failed her mot today and has taken my time away from modelling. Ashley
  4. Thanks Roger. I won't be doing anything that extensive to this project lol. Update tonight or tomorrow with some progress on the trailers viability lol. Ashley
  5. Ooo selling any car kits Keith? And Nick what you're doing might only be for your peice of mind as it were, but you are never the less finding and correcting faults that shouldn't be there. if this was an Airplane it it would've been rendered unbuildable by now for not being accurate haha. Ashley
  6. Thanks Andy. There are a few set for sale on eBay. Though a couple of prices are a bit on the high side. I recommend venturing to model shows and seeing what you can pick up. I've collected a few 1/43 kits since this set. Noticeably rare yet the price was always cheap lol. At the last show I went to I saw the Heller Jag you mention and the only reason I didn't pick it up is that I didn't have any money lol. And the one on Ebay atm is double the price I saw it for haha. I will defo get the others built up at some point and I'll be sure to post them up as I agree. 1/24 is too samey haha. Ashley
  7. When this is finished I think someone should send Belkits a link to it. Ashley
  8. Chrysler Hemi Orange was a colour option on the Chargers and was the supposed colour of the General Lee, so that's the colour you're aiming to recreate. That colour is also the colour all replica's are painted. The colour has a paint code and can be mixed up if you want the actual colour. But Halfords sell a very close shade that would fool anyone like previously stated. Ashley
  9. Yeah I just hope the block that you cut to the required heights allow the trailer to go over the tail gate and ride level. Will know soon enough as the bed should be finished very soon. So I can get a full mock up going. Ashley
  10. 2nd vote for Volkswagen Brilliant Orange. I paint a Charger Daytona in it and thought it would make a good match to Hemi Orange. Hemi orange as used on the General Lee is the same Hemi Orange used on the Hemi engines and some other high power Chrysler Big Blocks. Ashley
  11. The issue was caused by me having to put relief cuts into the decals to get them to conform properly. Then not waiting long enough before clear coating. When will i learn lol? The Heinz decal on the front corner decided to roll over on itself, luckily i managed to fold it back whilst the clear was still wet but that corner of the decal was ruined. My mate pointed out that i could add so damage along the sides to hide the problems, or blend them in but i didn't really want to go that route. I'll probably just live with it in the end but i want to get my run of bad luck over and done with first lol. Ashley
  12. Ok so i've been working on this and it's become my latest project. And as the title says it's long. Though not in the Time sense of the word. It's just really long lol. Right here's what this project entails: That's Meng's 1/24 Ford F-350 and a resin Dually conversion from Scenes Unlimited with a 32' Gooseneck trailer from Galaxie Limited. I haven't started the trailer yet but when i measured the length to see whether it was 1/24 or 1/25, I found out that it's 10 scale feet too long. so basically the length works out at 1/18 scale. I then measured the width and compared to actually 1/1 scale dimensions that too is out at 1/23 scale. So i just thought to hell with it, I'll just build it when the time comes and see if it 'looks' right. The main concern i have is to do with locating the fifth wheel but more on that later. I first opened the box a couple weeks ago at a Leicester Modellers build club and managed to get the chassis buit up to this stage: All black plastic to be painted black. Shhh i haven't painted it Next i built up the engine: And filled the ejector marks on the cab floor: Who's for a full mock up? Well i was lol. That's the chassis and interior of Fujimi's 1/24 Daihatsu Mira in the bed lol. Next i chose to strip some of the chrome parts as i prefered them body coloured. This is my prefered chrome stripper. None of your fancy dettol, mr musclke etc. Just Wilko's £1 own brand Oven Pride. And 24hrs later: Once the brake discs were painted up i got to work on the Dually wheels. Painted Matt black followed by a coat of Aluminium from an old Tamiya PS spray. Waste not want not etc haha. Rear's fitted: Now this is what i'd been hoping for: Just nice and glossy black. Not mirror shine but one i'm happy with. And it was a technique i'd been itching to try. Matt Black followed my gloss clear. Halfords Matt balck was the paint of choice and it went on that smooth that i didn't need to cut it back like i usually have to. I wet sanded the first clear coat with 2000 grit and the polished the 2nd coat with Meguairs Ultimate compound. Her'e the first dually fender finished with the marker lights installed: And after 2 attempts, Glued to the bed in full mock up view: Next up i got the front weel fitted and the exhaust painted and fitted. Another mock up And now for the potential issue for the trailer. Here's the ride height: it's very tall. The reason is that the Meng kit represents a 4WD truck, which rides higher than the RWD's Most dually's are RWD but you can get 4WD ones so that was never a problem. But it danwed on me that the trailer might not sit level. There is nothing i can do now about the ride height. And even if i was starting again with a new kit, the amount of work needed to lower the suspension would put me off doing it. So basically when i've finished the truck, if i can't get the trailer to sit level then i will save the trailer for a different truck. The other day i finished the engine and got it installed into the truck: For the engine i wasn't happy with the colour call outs. So i did some research and it turned out that Meng was right, the Powerstroke engines really are painted black. Bummer. But then i found out that the 6.4L engines as featured in this truck are still in production under the name MAXXforce 7 and are painted in a rather fetching Ford Engine Blue. so i followed suit This morning i got the second clear coat on the other fender and used my trusty Meguiars to polish it. And finished with the marker lights: That's all for now as i'm still in the process of clear coating panels and i need to get some paints for the interior. TTFN Ashley
  13. I might have eben rather abcent from the forum for a while but it doesn't mean i've not been busy. I've completed a multitude of models since but i'm particuly proud of this one. Ok so whilst at a show I came across a kit i'd not built since i was a kid and it was really cheap. So it would've been rude not to wouldn't it. And on the shelf next to the WRC98 Ok so if you weren't fooled, or if you were? This is the Heller 1/43 scale kit. I picked up the Airfix boxing of 6 rally cars for £8 at a show the other month as i remember having this exact set when i was a kid. And i'm rather pleased how it turned out. I had to fill a short shot infront of the roof scoop and had infuriating rage over the god aweful decals but i managed to succeed with it. The ariels are a Leicester Modellers trade secret. Though i'm sure people will have heard of the technique before. If you know it mwahahaha. And here's some choice in progress shots. Comments, Critiques etc welcome. TTFN Ashley.
  14. Ok here's how the Exxon car looks. Excuse the dust but it's been sitting for a couple months. It's not a complete disaster but I'm not happy with it. So I decided rather than continue drudging on with it, I'd put the build on hold until I felt like continuing it. TTFN Ashley
  15. Thanks Nick. The project isn't dead just on hold whilst I focus on a refining my painting skills on other models. Unfortunately I seem to have found a bad luck streak. I've definitely refined my paint stripping method haha Ashley
  16. Hi guys. I did make further progress than what has been posted. The Exxon car is basically finished, save the windows. I had a problem with the clear coat. It isn't bad but it wasn't up to the standards of the Kodak car. So I've decided to take a break from this build till next year. The reason I haven't updated this topic with that is because, since the update to the forums software I've sort of lost interest in it. I mostly view this forum via my phone and the update has made it the same as the Web version, and I now find it too fiddly. This is probably only the third time I've come back on here since lol. I'll try and post some pics of the Exxon car tonight and I may even start a topic on my latest project. Ashley
  17. Glad this is back on the go. I must admit I have sort of abandoned this forum since the update to the software. I just don't like it. The old Mobile version, which I mostly view this site via was so much better in my opinion. I will be sure to check in more often to keep up to date with the progress on this build. Ashley
  18. Aoshima are just about to release a Brian James trailer I suspect you had the same idea as me. Rothmans team van. I even spoke to Reji on their Facebook page about a decal sheet, to which they pointed out fact that a large transkit would be needed to correct the kit, lwb, crew cab, dual axle etc and they wasn't sure on its saleability. Still the seed has been planted mwahahaha Ashley
  19. Wow that is absolutely gorgeous. I didn't like this livery much but it's growing on me seeing you weave it over the kit. Ashley
  20. The 480 and the 440/460 model only share mechanical components. All the interior and even a lot of the electrical stuff is bespoke to the 480 model, which was less popular than the 440. So when the dealers started to sell off their old stock a lot of it wasn't suitable to the 480's. There's some real great guys on the continent that have gathered up as much stock as they could to help owners out. They are now looking at alternative parts from other Makes and even possibly getting some stuff remade. Hopefully it's the start of a good supply chain as insurers will write them off even for bumper damage because of lack of parts. A lot of people have stripped there cars down because they can make more money selling the parts than what the cars worth. Sad really as there are only 400 or so left on the road in the UK. with a further 600 Sorn Ashley
  21. I own a Volvo 480. I bet your mechanic friend worked on his fair few of them if his time there was during the 90's lol. Luckily mine is flawless. So far.... Haha Ashley
  22. Up until the 2004 facelift the New Mini One's and Coopers used the PG1 gearbox, known as the Midland box. The Cooper S and all models after used the Getrag box. I've not heard of it being the same M56 box used on the Volvo 850, S/V40, but I wouldn't be surprised. The PG1 box had an unusually high problem rate in the Mini's so needed replacing. You also might want to look up the Tritec engine used in the first gen New Mini's. I might have been wrong in the planned use for the K series engine had BMW not sold off Rover lol Ashley
  23. Bmw influenced the design but a great deal of the work including the shape was done by Rover. The original plan was the 1.4 k series matched to the PG1 gearbox. So likely 1.1 16v up to the 1.8 vvc and turbo versions would have been on offer. The BMW minis still used the PG1 boxes as it was a joint development of the R65 box, between Rover and BMW. I hate BMW for what they did to Rover when they sold it and kept the Mini. They had a sure fire hit on their hands regardless of people's views, and losing that model sealed MG Rover's fate really.
