  1. Masking the upper surfaces has begun. Originally I was going to use the same method as on the Eduard Mk IX but after a lot of faffing about and very little progress I abandoned that plan and went with the Blu-Tak sausage method. There is a little paint chip on the nose but it will be covered by the green so I'm not going to worry about fixing it.

  2. I would also recommend the Eduard kit. It goes together very well although I would suggest replacing the exhausts and upper cowl with AM parts. My first kit on returning to the hobby was the Tamiya MkI Spitfire with some Eduard etch and Ultracast resin, none of which I had used before and it turned out ok so don't be put off by it.

  3. Got a Humbrol mattecote question.... how matte is it supposed to be ? After I put a coat on, the results are - not to put too fine a point on it - a bit glossy.....

I thought that at first but if you give it a really good stir it comes out very matt. I've also heard people get good results by warming it up first.

  4. Hi ,

Thanks for the support. I can run with SX365. The plan is to build it cockpit open and wings folded.

I might add a bit of aftermarket to it in the form of some Ultracast wheels and resin exhausts. I was also wondering if the barracuda cast griffon rocker covers were worthwhile over the kit bits??

I used them on mine. The kit ones are a bit too round at the front compared to the resin ones. To be honest I couldn't really see much of a difference at first but once I did it was obvious they looked wrong. I also slimmed the propeller blades a little otherwise they look a bit like cricket bats.

  5. Great to see more progress.

How did you do that masking?

A strip of Tamiya masking tape was applied and the line drawn on free hand with a pen. I used a Manuscript Handwriting pen which worked fine but anything would do. Once I was happy I removed the tape, stuck it to a cutting mat and carefully cut along the line with a scalpel. Once I'd done that I simply placed the tape back in position and applied the next piece. Then it was just a case of repeating until I had all the edges in place. Once that was done I filled in the gaps with bits of tape. It helps to make a few alignment marks on the tape before you remove it to help you get it back in the right place.

  6. Many years ago I knew an elderly gent by the name of Tommy. Despite his advancing age he was always very dapper, with a smart jacket and neatly trimmed moustache. He was also a raconteur of great skill and had a store of tales which would always have us in fits of laughter. As a young man, he once told me, he owned a Brough Superior which he rode everywhere. As an inveterate tinkerer he made a few modifications to the engine to increase the compression and get more power out of it. One day, he met another Superior owner and although he didn't get the man's name, they got to know each other and it wasn't long before Tommy had made the same modifications to this other bike as he had to his own. Sadly, this other man was fatally injured in an accident involving this bike and it was only some time afterwards Tommy found out it was T.E. Lawrence himself. I have no idea whether the story is true or not but Tommy would often tell us he was the man who killed Lawrence of Arabia!

  7. Best way to get those lids off without any effort???? Hot water over the cap, run it under the hot water tap for a minute or so, or boil a kettle of hot water, it softens up all the gunge in the threads of the cap and bottle................I have used rubber gardening gloves also, but.............they were toooooo good, the glass neck of the bottle broke off, but the cap came off!!!

Damn. I knew there would be a clever way.

  8. This little Spitfire slowly nears completion. New decals have replaced the ones which were lost or damaged and some stencils have been added. A few more stencils need applying then it's just a case of putting on a matt finish and final assembly. One thing that will hold it up a little is I need to get a decent canopy but there's no rush.

I picked up some cheap tubes of oil paint recently so have been experimenting with the wash on the under surfaces. It's just a bit of brown and black with plenty of white spirit. I've tried to keep it quite subtle as I want this Spitfire to look almost new.

  9. Had a few hours to myself today so I managed to get some things done. Some of those things included a little model building. Masked off the canopy using the Eduard masks for the front and rear sections but on the central piece I used thin strips of Tamiya tape. The light grey square is just the hatch stuck in temporarily and the big hole in the middle is filled up with Blu-Tak

The frames were painted to match the interior and then I sprayed a bit of silver into the wing roots. This was Revell's Aquacolor thinned with a few drops of tap water and it went on perfectly. In fact it went on so well I was suddenly sorry I hadn't opted for a silver scheme. It's the first time I've used this paint and I'm impressed. The plan is to imitate wear and tear by masking with some PVA glue before putting on the top coat.

  10. Well, there's been a slight drama with the decals. After putting them on I realised I no longer have the instructions for the stencils so I thought I'd leave it for a bit until I could sort some out. As I hadn't finished decalling I didn't put a coat of Clear over them and that, as you can see, was a bit of an error.

All is not lost, however. The sheet has an alternative aircraft code so KL.T will simply become KT.O and I have these spare so with a little judicious trimming all should be well.
