  1. Finally got this built. Here it is in all its glory:

On the whole, an enjoyable building experience. Tamiya kits are really at the top of the tree for quality.

The only issue I had was with the number plate decals. As soon as they hit the (painted) plastic, they stuck right where they were placed. Didn't happen with any of the other decals from the same sheet. Weird.

    Hope you enjoy it.

The build can be seen here: http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/235007398-tamiya-124-mercedes-benz-amg-500sl/

    All the best, Alan.

  2. In 1974, during the fuel crisis, a friend of mine was riding down the A2 just outside London, at 2 in the morning, when he was stopped by the police. He was clocked at 134 MPH!

At the time there was a blanket 50 MPH limit.

Fortunately for him, the copper was rather lenient.

My friend said that the copper said:

"Well, seeing as it's 2 AM, the road is fully lit and there was no one else around, I have to book you for something. Will 74 MPH do?"

My friend accepted that, thinking a fine and a short ban was likely to be handed down. However, when he got the official letter, they gave him a warning not to do it again... Let off almost scott free!

    Cheers, Alan.

  3. Yes, I agree. In my opinion, the R32 is the best of the bunch. Beautiful lines with more than a hint of menace, and the muscle to back it up.

There's a guy at the local Volvo dealer who runs a tuned R34 model - go figure that one out... :)

Makes a magnificent noise, but I think that the more squared off lines aren't as attractive as the R32.

    All the best, Alan.

  4. Another one I am starting this year.

    IMG_0029_zps1f4dn41g.jpg

I have has this in my stash for a considerable time. Just look at the dust...

The box is suitably crammed with plastic:

I love the way that Revell just calls it "London Bus". I wonder if it's a copyright thing?

I am planning to do it as a refurbished version with the Scania engine. Not sure how accurate that is, but that's what I am planning.

    More to come soon...

    Cheers, Alan.

  5. OK. The obligatory sprue shots.

    First, the GTR 2000:

This is the box contents. Pretty stuffed and PE as well.

Spues still in the bags at present.

    y4m74bDw_bAm1E3wczUcVDEQBREjNopgigytGIEJ

You get a driver figure and extra plastic for the 'Street Custom' version. Different wheels etc.

I bought this on a whim after seeing a build of this here on BM. It was available from Hiroboy at a very reasonable price...

    Now the Nismo GTR:

    y4mM3Vh5ri2zVqFXIxd8TBMf8xV-awClf_FfB379

Again, extra sprues for the custom bits.

This was a Christmas pressy from my wife. A very understanding human being, if somewhat bewildered by my hobby  ("But where are you going to put it when you have finished it?" and "You have loads not even started, why do you want more?").

Finally, the 'ordinary' GTR (for want of a better definition...):

    Body and floor-pan primed:

    y4mFxa8tjWMr8R6rTx0hcURzoBYQo_0FWLA63KJK

    The sprues:

    y4mw25mzdJt6_6fI-MY0sX6485l2wAqhnkzTZlo6

    Transmission and suspension:

I am building this for my son, who adores all things Japanese.

It will be painted in that very bright metallic (or pearlescent) orange the Ford Focus ST (or RS, I can't remember...) comes in.

I think it's called 'Electric Orange'. Given my son's propensity for Metal music of all kinds, I thought he would want it matt black...

The plan is to get the first two up to about the same place as the last one, and then proceed forward with them as a group.

    More to come

  6. Having finished the Lamborghini late last year, and nearly finished the Mercedes, I decided to embark on a one-man multi-build.

I have in my stash the following:

    y4mdK13eH2Sk86kevIvUSJzIoYQQpMnDfJPeSiAy

    y4mpvNUssVFNYmtrF-GbDnicvYKTw7mI_E9dTnc5

    y4mysJy-ru5sYBW2YEGpW5DDNf4COO7hFY1UDL7r

The idea is to build them alongside each other as a one man 'group' build.

I think that the Japanese 'supercars' are pretty amazing beasts. Given that they were derived from humble origins in the case of these cars. I'm not sure about the new GTR. A powerful brute, but I think it's lost its way a bit.

These three are handsome as well as awe-inspiring.

The bottom one of these has already been started, and the body and floor-pan primed with Zero paints grey primer. The engine, suspension and transmission have also been completed.

Hopefully I can get started very soon.

    More pictures soon.

I'll get started on this project just as soon as the Merc is done...

    Cheers, Alan.

  7. Always wanted on of real thing back in the 70's. It was so much cooler than the Honda CB-750!

Rumour had it that if you whanged the throttle a lot, fuel consumption dropped to about 18 MPG! It only had a teeny tank as well.

Now well into my sixties, I still fancy one of these bikes. Maybe I'll get the model and satisfy my lust that way...

  8. I had the 1/24 Hasegawa version of this car. Complete disappointment. The only kit I ever binned before it was finished. All I have left is the wheels and tyres. To be honest, it was probably pilot error rather than the kit, though....:(

    Nice job, by the way.

    Cheers, Alan.

  9. Finally, just before the end of 2016.

I have completed another model. At this rate I may finish something else  just before the end of 2020!

    Anyway, here are the images:

On the whole, it was a pleasurable build. My biggest worry was getting the decals off the paper. My first attempt in lukewarm water failed to budge them. However, I tried water that was almost too hot to put my fingers in (i.e. From a nearly (well almost) boiling kettle), and that shifted them easily.

A little bit of micro-sol finished the job.

That's probably the last completion of 2016.

    Hope you enjoy.

    Cheers, Alan.

  10. Looking good.

My cousin worked in Chicago in the early 70's and had a Ford Pinto as his run-around there. He told me that it had the same engine as the Mk 3 Cortina (2 litre, I think), but with all the emissions control equipment it mustered all of about 50 BHP! Top speed with air-con off, about 75 MPH, with the air-con on, about 45 MPH! My dad had a Mk 3 Cortina 2000E, 105 HP and a top speed of about 110 MPH. Same engine, a lot more performance...

Things have moved on so far since then...

    Cheers, Alan.

  11. Hi Shaun,

I have this kit in my stash, somewhat stalled. I have partially built the engine, and had painted the body and chassis, but then it got put away for some considerable time. When I got it out again, I couldn't remember the Halfords' colour that I had used, so decided to strip it. The only thing that would touch the paint was Fairy Power spray. So, at the present it's on the to-do pile (Some time in 2017/2018 at my present pace!). My major concern was how to do the brakes so that they looked good through the spokes of the wheels. As far as I can tell, they are only the back half of the callipers. Have you had any thoughts on how you are going to address the brake callipers? If so, I would love to see what your ideas are. I shall keep looking at this build for inspiration. You never know mine might even rise up through the queue to the top...

Anyway, hope it goes well. They do look pretty spectacular, these Fujimi kits. (I have several of them, mostly Ferraris)

    All the best, Alan.
