  1. The official reason I have got directly from Lockheed in 1982 when I writing a book about the F-104 was as follow: In the very begining of F-104 prototypes the wing were NM but it soon appeared that due to high speed and overheating uppersurfaces they were problems of engeneering tolerancies that caused troubles with aileron and flaps movement It became standard practice with production A/C altough those problems were solved ( the Duch Starfighters never had white wings) it remained in painted instructions in T.O So nothing to do with nuclear flash or other reasons I did not get any explanation for the grey undersides (also in T.O paint instruction) as I did not ask . A testimony by a Belgian AF technical officer at the time of introduction of F-104 in service is it was because of corrosion problems
  2. @ all good freezing morning from Belgium, @Kari Fin markings; yes on Zim planes you have the bird at starboard and flag at port side I think all planes were like that as I never saw any picture of a ZIM plane otherwise @jenko and blimpyboy; the pics are from Mike Enslin , whose plane I modelled . he is the "white" pilot on pics Be careful : this armament with 4 twin store carriers and matra rocket pods was only for the pictuer; No Hawk flew with such a configuration with 4 pods on outer wing station ,as it would be to heavy The configuration on my model (2x twin store carriers +2x 2 matra pods and 2x Pili7 missiles on outer station) was usual as exlained in text and comments above Darth Vador insigna on 610 was personal marking of Mike on his assigned Hawk , but he was shot down on 604 The brown on my model is probably not 100% accurate but the best I could do 😉 Hope this is useful for your model Bob
  3. I faced the same problem when building my ZIM hawk some years ago Lot of research about ICM codes , mails to them without answer and so on My interpretation was based on many pictures (not only the one found on internet) and the help of Mike the pilot of the plane I was building who stated the brown was slightly reddish and a SA friend who saw them The one in my model pic are probably a little bit to "luminous" due to the flash Anyway I'm happy with it
  4. Hi Lunarhighwaay Nice subject and build Plane was the particular bird of Lt Col Robert " Bob" Louvigny , BAF detachment CO Kamina Air base ( in Katanga ex Belgian Congo )in 1958/59 Two little remarks :wingtip deco is not totally accurate and there is the Advanced Flight School badge missing on right side See my article on https://www.hangarflying.eu/fr/2021/01/les-t-6-harvard-decores-de-kamina/ keep the good work Bob
  5. Thanks Don for those interesting comments;I think you are speaking of "flag" targets and not "sleeve" targets (some kind of cylinder larger at the end that at the front. But it's interesting as it shows that aerial targets were not necessarily red or a very visual color .
  6. Dear all, Could someone help me : I am in a project of a Belgian Mosquito TT6 I am stuck with one question : What was the color of the target banners (sleeves) used on Mosquito target tugs (using ML aviation Type G winch) I have got an "indirect" answer trough the Belgian old Pilots association that they were some of silver colored canvas or textile , what looks odd to me as silver in blue sky is not very visible Any answer or details welcomed ! Kind regards bob verhegghen
  7. Sh... model! but well done Please note than on this particular plane the outer elevons were also âinter yellow up and under; This was a DACT scheme in winter 84/85
  8. Hi John , nice to hear from You I have sent you a PM Very nice detailed pic ! I wonder if it is not a Belgian Mosquito as i have seen an almost decoration on a BAF mossie We used to have some Spatz here in Belgium but I think no one is still flyable; Nice little glider . You might be interested by one of my article about glidieng old days https://www.hangarflying.eu/fr/2017/11/1947-1962-quinze-annees-de-vol-a-voile-a-temploux/ https://www.hangarflying.eu/fr/2018/03/la-sabena-et-le-vol-a-voile/ There are some pics in it but text is in French kind regards Bob
  9. Thanks T-21. I already have seen it but does not give dimensions only small pics . There are good pics of the winch on the net but what I would like to find are the exact dimensions ; lenght, height or diameter and also dimensions of the buffer unit tubes or good accurate drawings I think I have collected all that can be find on the net ,books, articles , Meteor TT20 winch,Firefly winch I wrote more than 25 mails to private, musea or organisations in Britain, Belgium, Australia, Sweden but without success (always responding but with negative answers) but I still hope the answer from Hendon RAF museum and data from Australia ( but they have other preoccupations for the moment what I understand of course) Les's hope some day one will find a tehnical manual or something like that .and will be ready to share . .should anybody been able to help do not hesitate to contact me on [email protected] By the way T21 are you also a glider pilot ?I have a 1/1 scale ASK 13 (D-3438) and a KA6Cr (D-5188) With my best wishes for 2020 to all britmodellers ...
  10. Dear all, I am a Belgian modeller and my project for 2020 is a 1/32 scale Tamiya Mosquitoas a TT3 target tug of the Belgian Air force ; I have accumulated pics and explanation of how the system worked but I have been searching since many months for accurate drawings of the ML aviation Type G high speed target towing winch . I have contacted almost all belgian, british and australian museum where I suspected they might have that info ( ex Mosquito musuem, DH Museum, Hendon museum etc..- but without any success till now as that info seems not existing anywhere. Does any one of the Britmodeller community have good drawings of that bl.... winch ( (:-)) , eventually factory drawings, extracts from technical manuals , exact dimensions (lenghts, diameter etc..) It would be my best hoped Xmas present 🙂 Any pics / drawings of the cable exchange/ release systems that is behind the winch also welcome Hoping for any help , I wish You all a merry Xmas and a happy 2020 New Year for you and family and a Xmas tree full of models Kind regards Bob Verhegghen [email protected] belgium https://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/234966679-bae-hawk-zimbabwe-af-n°610-revell-132/&tab=comments#comment-1725096
