  1. Good luck, caring can be really hard work, and emotionally tough as well. It made me really consider some of The Big Questions, and as a result of my experience, I quit my job to shirk for myself. Which kinda feels similar to semi-retirement. It's financially scary (especially if you have a stash addiction) but now I'm not commuting, travelling to pointless conferences, training, coaching & navigating corporate politics etc etc so much time has opened up for me.

Sounds like you've got worthwhile sources of distraction at hand though. And when that fails, there's always the Forum ;)

  2. Yeah, true, but…. Sometimes a “vintage” is the only game in town for some Marques.  And I actually quite enjoy a relatively simple build - detail is nice, but sometimes it’s nice to just make something (relatively!) quickly, without spending time on incy wincy details that’ll rarely be seen. (I tend to build 1/72 though, so YMMV).

  3. Perversely, there's been times I've had the most satisfacton with the kits I came to care least about. Once I've gone past that "oh, stuff this" stage, I might start trying out new techniques or different approaches, 'cause it doesn't really matter if they don't work out. Or I just bash the thing together quickly as I would have done when I was a kid, forgetting about accuracy or perfection. It can be liberating.

If I’m building an old 1:72 kit that’s got only crude interior detail and one of those thick, distorting transparencies, I sometimes don’t bother with any cockpit interior at all. It’s the overall shape of the machine I’m most interested in.

  5. ⬆️ What they said, 100%
At the risk of sounding a bit earnest, it's been good for me to think about why am I doing this - as a creative, interesting, and sometimes infuriating challenging passtime? Or to try and win prizes or fleeting adulation? I think it's better to relax and enjoy it without stressing too much.
And I've learnt to appreciate my mistakes, as this is how you learn. I think the quality of my builds generally trends upwards (slowly!), but you have to accept that sometimes it'll slide backwards - especially when you're trying out new techniques, approaches or styles.
No matter how well or badly your last build turned out, there's always another one round the corner.

Perhaps I could be a much better modeller if I were to invest a lot more time, effort and money into the hobby. But I think this would take the fun out of it.

And some folks are probably just naturally talented at what they do (your Pelé's, your Schumacher's, your Picasso's etc). You can enjoy their work, but it's not healthy to compare yourself against them, IMO.

Did a screen print of the Revell ad, filled in the form and sent off for the catalogue.  Can't wait to see what's in it!

Wish I’d thought of that - I think I just ruined my iPad.
