Resurrecting this thread as I finally got around to working on a 1/72 Eduard FW190 f-8 for Stocky's aircraft. Something's puzzling me in terms of the upper wing markings. One could, perhaps, make the assumption that where the Balkenkreuz was located, and now type A roundels are placed, the RAF would have had to "blot out" said Balkenkreuz similarly to what they did on the fuselage. That is, use some paint prior to painting the type A roundel. Is this a fair "assumption" (yes.. assuming is a bad thing but I can't seem to locate any photos of the aircraft from "above" per se) Any input appreciated. Cheers, Dave

I know that Franks does state that all he's done was to "give you as much data as possible, so that you can make your own decision as to the most likely scenario" - mind you, that is in the small print at the very beginning before the Acknowledgements. Maybe the photos should be suffice in this case LOL - I did find the photo of AG633 which obviously confirms Steve's comment - this makes my life (eventually will backdate the Academy 1/72) and the life of the modeller building the 1/32 Hobbycraft kit a LOT easier. Thanks a ton Steve!! So that would mean that Freeman's book was correct? That is, nothing beyond AG423 (NA-73 production) and all of the NA-83 production did not have the chin gun fairings? Lastly, I don't want to be a bother but is there some source link I can provide to the builder (I trust what you're saying but want to ensure the builder knows where the info is coming from - he's building the old 1/32 Hobbycraft kit as a commission build for the WWII vet that flew the aircraft) Thanks kindly and muchly appreciated! Good Day Everyone, Reviving this thread (once again) as I am assisting in a build of a Mustang Mk.I and there's been a bit of contention surrounding the chin gun fairings on the mount being built (AP178 flown by 430 Squadron - "J" call letter) My understanding is both productions (NA-73 and NA-83) of the Mustang Mk.Is (which include AP178) would have had the chin fairings in place as they left the factory. Were these chin fairings ever "removed" in the field? If so, how commonplace would that have been? Lastly, was that even feasible and/or possible to do? My current reference is Franks' "The North American P-51 Early Mustang (including the A-36A, P-51 & P-51A to C)" by Valiant Wings (2013). Another gentleman helping out on the build suggests that Freeman's book "Mustang At War" (1974) suggests AM/AL serial codes onwards did not, in fact, have the fairings installed initially (i.e. off of the production line). Any assistance would be helpful and appreciated! Cheers, Dave

Thanks Graham, I thought the Airfix kit had the parts but, I guess, it likely doesn't. I know it seems like, based in the reviews I had read, that most of the radial engined Wimpys could be built from it but these differences are probably too much vs the MPM kit (or I could just suck it up and find myself the Italeri Mk X kit.... which is still MPM) Cheers, Dave

Hi All, Been a while since I’ve posted here but still building.... I’ve been hunting to determine if this is feasible - making a Wellington Mk X from the Airfix Wellington Mk Ic. I’ve hunted online and here on the forum and I haven’t found any info. It may be easier just to use an existing MPM Wellington Mk III that I have in my stash but the Airfix kit, being more modern, and from what I’ve read, an excellent build as well I’d love to see if I could use it instead. I am DYING to snag the Yale... all Canadian too!! Having built the RS Models Magister.. i can say that, if the Yale is of the same quality, these are going to be great little kits if only short run - the build for the Magister was fairly straightforward and, surprisingly, a lot easier than some Special Hobby kits that I have come across in my time. I hadn't realized Stocky had an FW-190 F8 with his markings on it. Well now, here I thought I was "finished" garnering all the kits that I could have garnered that had been flown by RCAF pilots and then THIS thing shows up... *LOL* Thanks for posting Grizly! Cheers, Dave

I recall attempting the MPM Mk I when it was released - and I would concur with Ben's conclusion - it's a pain in the b-o-t-tom to get fit and alignment well. I also have the Italeri kit which I'm holding off on until I have mastered the Zen art of patience......

I see a lot of "In The Box" reviews from folks on Scalemates (IPMS Deutschland etc. ) but I don't know if anyone's done a "build review" of the MPM Kit. I have one of these in my stash (the MPM RAF/SAAF Mk III to build for the RCAF) but I'm curious if these are going to have the "usual" MPM fit issues that some of their kits have. Cheers, Dave

I sent Mr Belcher an email regarding the Northstar conversion - the link on his site to the instructions points toward the "Minuteman III" kit of his so I'm curious if these have even started shipping as of yet. According to the auto reply I received it appears that all orders from him are currently delayed and will begin again on October 25. Once I hear back and get more information I'll post here. Hi all, Just a curiosity as I'm almost complete the Airfix 1/72 B5N2 Kate and I've chosen to do it straight OOB and I'm having difficulty deciding how best to portray the camouflage/paint scheme that is shown for Shigekazu Shimazaki's aircraft (EI-311) on Airfix's instructions: What I'm curious about is the following: Was this camo applied in the field with a brush? I'm trying to figure out if this is how it should be "painted" - I've seen others spray paint this type of hap hazard camo but I'm unsure if the edges should be so soft (or for that matter so hard as they are if you brush painted it). Any insight or help is greatly appreciated. Cheers, Dave

Hi guys, Just getting a chance to revisit this today - I've been swamped with a new dog, work, wife, etc. *LOL* - so I haven't had enough time to continue to do research or to read all the posts (and to respond to messages!!) - Because I build in 1/72 - and because the "D" is lacking.. I think the only kit that may be reasonable would be the Italeri B25-B/C that was produced some time back, I opted, instead, for a Hasegawa B-25J (glass nose) and will go from there. Scooby, thanks for the offer - if I was building in 1/48, I'd be all over those decals!! And what awesome photos!! So.. with the "City Of Saskatoon" ruled out of the question... I'm going to hunt down what B25-J's I could tackle... Cheers, Dave

I mean, identifying features and such, only because I'm not familiar with all the Mitchell variants and I'm not doubting that it is a B-25D but if I am going to go down a road, I just want to be certain of which road I'm going down (and, obviously, it would help with kit selection ) Thanks again, Dave
