  5. Good luck! ISTR that it needed lots of dry fitting and measuring the distances between the strut holes, and getting the same sweep and dihedral on both upper and lower wings. Is the distance between the uprights of the "N"s wider at the top? Regards, Adrian

I've just finished this in the FROG GB and thought it might be of interest to a wider audience: The aircraft is well-photographed example from 60 squadron, based in the North-West Frontier (present-day Khyber Pakhtunkhwa), some time before 1930 (leading blue stripe on rudder). I picked up the kit for four quid from a vendor at SMW in 2018, and the conversion was inspired by an article in the May 1966 edition of Meccano Magazine by Doug McHard. A few notes: The engine is an accident. I expected to have to source one from elsewhere and I just started messing around with the kit one and some scraps for fun. It ended up looking too good for me to throw away (but unfortunately not much like a Jupiter) so it stayed... The bombs are left over from a Airfix DH4 kit. They look longer than the 112lb bombs in the photos (don't know whether they are a different earlier type or simply not accurate) and as a result I've put them side by side instead of in tandem on a single rail. There is such a lot of extra detail that could be added to these inter war general purpose machines (bomb rails for instance); it's sometimes hard to know when to stop when you find yourself in a rabbit hole. I don't have any figures appropriate to the period or location to pose alongside. Shorts and solar topees were the order of the day. I need to build a DH4 to go with this, my DH9 (Airfix conversion) and 9A (KP) so I can pose them for a family group photo. Apart from giving the tyres a sandy dusting, I didn't do any explicit weathering. The model got handled and touched up so much when I was rigging and adding all the detail that it ended up looking pretty well used without any extra help! Another inspiration for this build was @hendie's magnificent 1/48 CAD design and 3D print scratch build of a 28 Squadron Wapiti here on BM. It was interesting to me to see how different the three builds were to each other, driven by the different modelling eras, techniques and starting points. Well I've just read more than I intended to while having a hot cross bun and a cuppa! 🤷 I will stick with Revell 68 or Humbrol 116 acrylics, whichever is nearest to hand at the time, although I might start throwing in a touch of olive drab to the Revell.   14. I think I would have believed you! A bit of a late night last night. I could have flipped the photos but I would have needed a reversible serial number... Thanks chaps. It came out rather better than I expected or hoped. You have no idea how glad... I may be all those things but it is also straightforward, robust, simple and well-fitting, all qualities that I greatly admire in a kit. The flying surfaces match the plans that were commonly available at the time and struts and top wing built up amazingly well. Good job I've got another six in the stash, eh? 🙄 To be honest, I suspect that making an operational Wallace from the prototype would probably send the builder into the same spiral of tiny mods that I had with this one, so I think you made a good call with your Everest example, especially as you can pair it up with the Atlantic Vimy! Anyhow, I flattened the wheels a bit and gave the tyres a dry-brush of sandy dust before taking some more pictures for the gallery. Novo re-pop of the F167 Westland PV6/Wallace, bought for four quid at SMW 2018, and converted to a Westland Wapiti in a rather more involved than intended build inspired by the Doug McHard article in the May 1966 Meccano Magazine: The WIP can be found here.   20. Five out of the six lights germinated (I need two) and I've got a bunch of discs that I will need for wheel hubs and identification lamps: The clocks went forward last night for summertime here and I'm shocked at how late it is! Still hoping to call it complete today...
  21. Well it might be fun for you but it's not all roses over here: Navigation lights in streamlined fairings above the wingtips. I tried and failed to make them out of blobs of glue on a stick, so this is the second attempt and they're already twice the size they ought to be... ...and I've just realised I haven't done the four wires linking upper and lower ailerons together. Next build is deffo going to be strictly OOB! Yeah, right.

  25. That idea might have legs (although later fighters like the Fury, Bulldog and Demon all had plain sloping windshields). However, the DH4-9-9A all had rather upright windscreens, so they might have thought they needed the glass perpendicular to the sight line. Maybe the materials of the time weren't up to making distortion free sloping windscreens? Regards, Adrian
