  1. Well, for me, the scariest thing about the FROG Baltimore is the poor shape of the cowlings. I'm going to construct them from plastic card strips and hoops cut with my Olfa circle cutter:

Held up against the plan, you can see that the steps follow the curvature of the real cowling, so it should be fairly easy to fill and sand to the right profile:

I've used Contacta not CA because I needed fiddle time to get it all lined up right. Hopefully they will be dry enough to pop them out of the jig tomorrow morning. I probably shouldn't have started this at twenty to midnight, but if this works that's one of the scariest jobs done!

  2. Super model there. It shows off the clean lines of the Spitfire beautifully.

I note that it has the same markings as the old Airfix 1/72 Spitfire Mk1 kit, but a rather different scheme. I guess the folks at Kotare have been busy with their research!

  3. I see that the nacelle inlets are mirror images. I read recently that French twin engined aircraft of the era all had each engine turning in opposite directions to cancel out torque. So I guess the airflow would be different for each engine, hence the mirroring.

Nice approach to the cylinder fins. I've used wrappings of copper wire strands to get a similar effect, but only yesterday I came across a stack of Stanley knife blades in their packet - I wonder if that might be a way of doing multiple fins in one go?

It looks very nice. Good job on the rigging too. Hard work starting from that kit!

    WW1 two seaters

I keep looking at the KP kits, they have their frustrations. I've built the Sopwith Swallow and the DH9A, and their Albatros C.III is on the build pile.

Otherwise it's vac form heaven ;). I've got a Joystick Austrian Aviatik B.II currently on the go as a background build, which will be my first red and white wingtip stripes scheme.

  5. Nice pair! I haven't seen the Maquette DH9A kit before but I guess the KP and the Clearprop ones make it irrelevant now. I built the KP and thought it was good apart from the decals, but I think it suffered from being released at the same time as the Clearprop one, which is meant to be better.

Mind you, it's good to see some coverage of these inter-war types. I'm still waiting for a 1/72 injected Fairey IIIF at a reasonable price (Kora one starts at 47 quid at Hannants! I could buy the re-released Revell BV222 for under 45 quid...)

I had a go at using this kit to make a Wapiti many years ago

I think it's a conversion that's crying out to be done!

As I've said, I went down far too many rabbit holes in this conversion - I haven't compared the finished result back to a Wallace fuselage to see if all the faffing about with thinning the fuselage actually made a noticeable difference. And maybe I shouldn't ;)

  7. Thanks all for the very kind feedback. As I said, the build did run away with me a bit but it was fun to do. I'm still bothered by that engine though...

@JWM Your Wallace and Wapiti conversions on here around a decade ago first tickled my interest in doing the conversion. Took a while to get going...

@Learstang Well, if this doesn't prompt a mainstream manufacturer to release a kit of the Wapiti, I'm all out of ideas!

I've got another six in the stash, my most duplicated kit. I no longer need one for converting an Airfix DH4 to DH9A following the 1960s Alan Hall Airfix Magazine articles because I built the KP DH9A last year, so I guess next up will be to build the PV-3 and PV-6 over Everest in the next FROG GB. And an in-service Wallace could be on the cards too. Then the remaining wings might come in handy for some other inter-war projects I've been looking at. Gosh, maybe I need some more... :wicked:

    Thanks again,

    Adrian
