What the origin of the "a well-known X" phrase? Never encountered it in the 'states.
I suspect it's something to do with avoidance of liability for libel. So we might have "a well-known modeller with a predilection for hedgerow animals..." and then say something scurrilous without it being actionable. See also "adulterous (well known) premier league footballers".
