  1. XF54 is way too dak for LAG, more akin to Dark Gull Grey. On the IPMS Stockholm charts, they suggest XF-20, although personally I use XF-80, as it's a much lighter grey, almost a warm white colour which I had always seen LAG as being. It has quite often been mistaken as being white in certain lighting conditions, so that's why I go for XF-80. https://www.ipmsstockholm.se/home/urbans-color-reference-charts-part-i/urbans-colour-reference-charts-united-kingdom/ You need to scroll quite a way down the page to 1945- (onwards) and find BS381c:627 Light Aircraft Grey.
  2. If anyone is interested, this months Airfix Model World (issue 154, Sept 2023) has a pull-out supplement with development article, 32-page full build, & walkround article

  4. Not too sure if you can get hold of a copy, but there is a full build article on the M-55 in the March 2022 (Vol 44/issue 1) of Scale Aircraft Modelling from Guideline Publications, with walk-round pictures in the same issue.
  5. I don't build things where the rotating device is on top.... But even I'm tempted to get one😄 Especially after seeing one in the flesh this evening. One of the editors of Phoenix Publications is a member of my local model club, and brought one along for us to drool over during Wednesday evening club meeting. Very nice indeed!!!!!
  6. Nobody (except those who helped with the research) knew about it until the announcement yesterday! They managed to keep it so quiet, the intelligence services could learn a thing or two!!!!😬
  7. For the earliest version only. The other three versions have them. As they explained, it was a design trade off.
  8. Yep.... https://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/235125294-wasp-148/#comment-4679643
  9. Sprue shots are available on the Key Model World webpage (they have made it free to view and not hidden behind their paywall): https://www.keymodelworld.com/article/airfix-148-westland-sea-king-suprise-reveal?utm_campaign=kmw social&utm_content=257992009&utm_medium=social&utm_source=facebook&hss_channel=fbp-633337750041055
  10. According to the video, the kit does have option for folded blades. Look at post from Homebee above - middle two have folded rotors.
  11. I wouldn't dismiss that too much. I wanted a match to a BS colour, and popped to a local paint store that stated they had a paint matching service. They only matched to RAL charts! When I pointed out I was looking for a British Standard match, and they were trying to match it to a totally different set of standards which would not therefore contain the actual paint match, they were not impressed with my comment!!!
  12. Yep!!! About 2 years ago I purchased, for myself, and my wife, 2 brand new Motorola 5g phones. The website was a .co.uk site, no mention was made what-so-ever anywher, at anytime that it was anything other than what it appeared. Turns out, it was not a UK website, and the warehouse it was connected to was based in The Netherlands. I was extremely fortunate not to get stung by any import duties, as the two phones were in excess of £500 between them. I only found out when I received the shipping notice and it stated where the phones had been shipped from. This was during the crossover period after the change in customs practices!!!! I was not a happy person as on my view, using British registered website gave the impression it was a UK based warehouse etc. There was literally nothing that contradicted that either.
  13. Wowsers talk about resurrecting a thread from the dead!
  14. Can't find any info on the tail unit of the Sea Fury, however... Tony Butler's book on the Sea Fury published by Dalrymple & Verdun, states that Camm chose an entirely new design for the Fury & Sea Fury to break away from any further adaptation of the Typhoon/Tempest line and fuselage structure. Talks about the wing structure, the monocoque fuselage, rudder, but no mention of how the tail plane was designed or constructed! There is a note to say that the horizontal stabs were increased in size from 6Ft 6 to 7ft, but no mention about the vertical stab. I did find a reference to the tail in SAM publications MDF scaled down (no 4) "The Hawker Sea Fury", but all it states is that the semi-navalised prototype SR661 had the tail modified to be taller, as the original short tail and rudder were found to give poor directional stability during take-off under full power! One phrase that you may find useful/interesting that both books state is that whilst the Sea Fury is superficially similar to the Typhoon/Tempest and does have a family resemblance, the Fury/Sea Fury was in reality an almost completely fresh design based on a monocoque fuselage design, rather than a tubular-braced fuselage design of previous Hawker designs.
  15. As another addition to @Mike comments above, if using cellulose thinners of any type, make sure you either have a paint booth with an externally vented fan assembly, and/or a decent respirator. You should be using at least some sort of face mask with fine particulate filters on when spraying anyway, but even more so when using cellulose thinners.
  16. Definitely needs thinning, as to how much .... The oft quoted "skimmed milk consistency" but that all depends on your own set up and preferences. I tend to start with a 50:50 mix of paint/varnish to thinners and go from there and adjust as required. The reason being paints tend to have varying viscosity and weather can also play a part! Regarding what to thin with, I tend to use the specific thinner for the paint maker, so in this case I would use X-20A Tamiya acrylic thinners. It's been specifically formulated for their paint. An alternative would be ultimate modelling thinners, which is formulated to be used with many different types of paint.
  17. If you read the article, it states that the aircraft was stripped of any and all usable components and the remainder was recycled/ scrapped, except for the rear 3rd of the fuselage. That was sent to Lockheed for corrosion analysis. Apparently this aircraft was the first to be accepted into USAF service for C-141 and after re-sparring in the early 90s was also upgraded to C-141C standard, which included and all glass cockpit.
  18. The new kit Buccs are indeed things of beauty. I've built 2 RAF versions so far, with a 3rd (RN) waiting in the wings as next on the chopping block. One of them is a tribute build to one that crashed whilst I was posted up at Lossiemouth. I was a member of the RAF Admin trade group for my sins, and so part of the station discip flight, as a result when the Bucc went into the North Sea, and the crew killed, I ended up as part of the funeral party for the Nav. He received full military honours, and I was part of the firing party giving the gun salute at the cemetery. So, I decided that with a bit of research, I would build mine with that birds colours. It came out rather a bit of ok.
  19. A few years ago my local club had a films theme at Telford. So had a few busts like Batman, Catwoman etc and film related models. We are in the process of discussing doing another theme for the possibility of next year or the next year. But it's also getting the rest of the membership on board as well. At the moment it's being discussed in the committee, to be put to the membership at some stage!
  20. @Quiet Mike for about 15 to 18 months, up to February this year I had a complete head block when it came to building anything. I just couldn't! Wanted to, but had a complete lack of mojo. Started a few, but the juice just wasn't there at all. Still bought stuff to build, but could not get to the modelling desk at all - mentally not physically. There was nothing but my headspace stopping me. Then, for whatever reason, I was sat reading a key publishing bookazine on building the Airfix Buccaneers (1/72 & 1/48) and all of a sudden things just clicked into place and got me back. I built one of the new lit 1/72 buccs in a couple of weeks or so, and have built another 7 or so kits since then. Who knows what causes the head funk that causes the loss of interest in the first place (burnout...?) But similarly, it can be the smallest of sparks that gets the juices flowing again. So far I've built several 1/72 military planes, a couple of 1/48, and a 1/32 ( took me 10 days, and got 3rd in the local club competition... Proud of that as I wasn't planning on entering that one, and was a last minute change of plan - there were about 15 entries that night, before any smart comments from the back.....) I'll end it here, but I will add, that if things do seem a bit much, and everything seems a bit too much effort, talk to someone. Your mental health is far more important than a few bits of plastic and paints.
  21. Google search found this https://aerospaceweb.org/aircraft/transport-m/c141/pics02.shtml
  22. We live fairly near to Bletchley Park, and whenever BBMF are in the area, they do a cursory flypast, so we regularly get Spitfires, Hurricanes, and the Lancaster overflying the house. As last weekend was the British F1 GP, we also had the Red Arrows over and then the Lancaster later in the afternoon. Alway a pleasure to see the old girl in the air.
