  1. Cheers, Bill, will see how i get on.

I can only find a couple of pictures of XV466 "D" with the white fin. Im guessing that it was either an early thing that didnt last or a very late thing just before the F3s took over?

Edit - found a fair few more pics and a bit of info - the white fin was apparently for an open day at Mt Pleasant in December 1991 and was applied to XV461 "C" (Charity) and XV466 "D" (Desperation) for sure, cant find pics of the other 2 with the white fin though, not yet anyway. Might be of use or interesting to someone, maybe... :)

According to Patrick Martin in his "British Phantoms" book ( a must for anyone with an interest in the Phantom) XV421/."F" Faith also had the white fin. No mention of whether the fourth FGR2 XV422. "H" Hope had it applied. The White fins were applied to commemorate 1435 Flight's 50th anniversary.
  2. Am I right in thinking that to make one of these

My only option for decals is the Richard Caruana decals?

Has anyone on here used Mr Caruanas decals? If so, how did you get along with them in regards the scale and general decal paper and/or decal solution, that sort of thing?

    Cheers for any help/advice

    Rob

As you have to supply the decal paper yourself, it rather depends on the quality you get, your printer and the ink you use. His artwork is pretty good, accuracy can be variable, but I think his Phantom sheet is mostly okay ( apart from the "xtra-strong" 29 Sqn bars being blue instead of black?).

As far as I can recall they should automatically print to 1/48th, but you can mess around with sizes before you commit to decal paper.

Most decal sheet will come with advice relevant to that paper.

  3. Thanks T7 for your informed input, very interesting. There must have been some forethought with e.g. the Canberra B(I)8, as the forward upper fuselage decking is separate, presumably to facilitate production of the B2 etc in due course? Wishful thinking on my part perhaps.

Airfix's 1/72 Canberra's were broadly speaking, the last of the Old Airfix regime. As such they featured heavy panel lines and a general " clunkiness". In the ensuing 8 or so years since they were issued, Airfix tooling has improved no-end. They could produce a " gold-fish" bowl insert for the B(I)8, but the kit would still retain the old style of moulding. One can only imagine the flak Airfix would get for issuing a kit like this. I would hope that if Aifix DO get around to issuing a B2/B6 kit, and given Hornby's current financial predicament that's far from certain, it would be an all new tool.

  4. Thanks chaps! I did indeed mean sprue, but unwanted and unwarranted spell-checker (who they think I am, Harry Potter? Spelling checker, please!) "corrected" it and I didn't spot it. D'oh! Both spring tab and balance tab ailerons, large and small bore intakes, both types of canopy(?). We should be able to do almost any Mk. 8 from this kit. Oh my aching wallet!

...i have a spare glazed PR nose from the CA kit...so i can add any FR9 to the list of F8's....aching wallet indeed....

  5. Hi everyone.

I am just about to start this and I note that the instructions state that this is Extra Dark Sea Grey all over. This seems a bit dark to me. What are your thoughts please?

Extra Dark Sea Grey is correct. The white undersides were over painted en route to the South Atlantic. Shars on board Invincible were sprayed painted and those on Hermes brush, or roller painted? I've never really seen a demarcation between where the White was on any photo's I've seen, so wouldn't make that much of a fuss in replicating it, especially in 1/72nd. And the finish was glossy.

  6. A friend of Paragons apparently made some a good while back and L'Arsenal do a sort of French version, but theyre a bit "flat" and not quite right for a British Jag.

Any suggestions where I might find at least one if not 2 sets of 1/48 Gr1 Jag ladders?

The only RAF Jagular ladders I'm aware of were indeed From Neil at Paragon. These are a long time out of production. They're photo etched and are very finely produced. They make up into nice accessories. Not sure where you'd get them now, I got mine well over ten years or so ago....

  7. Hi

This is going to be my first major conversion on a large scale, so I just want to ask for some help and advise. I have a lot of reference material but only one photo of the Victor I'm doing, I also have the article from SAM magazine from August 2006 and I have one already built that I bought of eBay. Apart from cutting out of the inner wings, Kuchemann fairings and wing tips, what else do I need to cut from the wings lead/trailing edges for the B1?

A couple of other things, can I use an old tube from a Revell poly liquid glue bottle? Do I have to add any jet pipes to the new inner wing sections?

    Cheers

    Dave

Was that my article? I built mine as a K1 tanker...the main other amendment was to twist the wing mid span so the wing tips were parallel with the fuselage. I suspect that the new Airfix rendition may feature better shaped components than the old Matchbox offering...

  8. The first new Xtradecal for the Meteor F.8 is now on our web site. Pictures due soon. And more sheets will follow. You are right, there are an awful lot of schemes/squadrons that could be done. https://www.hannants.co.uk/product/X48158. And don't forget this one has been available for some years and there are still a few left https://www.hannants.co.uk/product/X48043

Excellent! Could I request you upscale 72114? That'd keep me busy for the rest of eternity!!
  9. Thanks for the link guys. An interesting thread with a considerable divergence of views! The only image I couldn't open was the drawing that Edgar Brooks posted. Not sure if it has been deleted or if I am having finger trouble.

I think the only safe conclusion is that there were a lot of possible configurations for hanging rockets on Hunters plus a number of different racks and rails.

I am assuming the rack/rail was the same regardless of whether you hung one or two rockets from it?

From memory, the drawing Edgar posted was of the rail on a Firefly. This was very different from the "rails/ racks" used by the swept wing Hunter. There appear to have been a few different arrangements on the attachments used on the Hunter. These all have a lug system where the upper rocket fits into the tubular rail. Any lower rocket would have to have a similar lug system.

  10. Have a good read through that thread. I couldn't find any real close up photo's of the two-tier system, but adapted what I could see when I scratch built a set ( fourteen actually, six racks with two each, and a single mount on the outer wing pylon) when I built my FGA.9 many years ago.....

  11. I'm being troubled with the selection of the correct wingset for the new Kinetic BAe Sea Harrier FRS.1 and have been unable to glean anything from this website or others, in spite of extensive coverage of the kit. I fully understand that for the FRS.1, I should use the wing set on Sprue 'I' (I1-3) which includes the additional vortex generators missing from the wing set included in the 'original' F/A-2 kit (Sprue B) but I have also noticed that the leading edge of the latter wing set does not include the 'dog tooth' found on the Sprue I wing set. Is this another inaccuracy in the original kit or was the mainplane on the original aircraft so modified between the FRS.1 and F/A-2 variants to produce the 'smoother' leading edge found on Sprue B ?. It would be good to know before I embark on my F/A-2 build. IIRC the wings on the FRS.1 and F/A-2 were identical but I stand to be corrected as well !.

Follow the kit instructions......trust them, they're right!!

First generation Harrier wings - Mainplanes - were identical ..APART from the FA2. (So that found on a GR1 would be identical to a T4, AV8A AND Sea Harrier FRS1.)The FA2 wing had a small flush triangular fairing in place of the dog-tooth, a vortex generator on each side removed and had an additional wing fence. Kinetic have correctly portrayed both wings, in both kits....
