  1. I'm planning much the same, I also have a Canberra itch, that needs scratching! .i just need to decide which mark, though. PR3 or 7, or derivative is highly likely. The breakdown of the resin glazing looks as if it was meant to fit this kit, rather than the B2/6. Might be worth having a word with Ali? Edit: Quick question for John...the 'finger' airbrakes. Airfix's upper wings are one short, or are they? And what about the lower wings?
  2. I'm sure you'll be fine Mark, the only problem you may have is matching the wings upper and lower.....In fact, on my last Vulcan build... once the upper wings had been added to the built up fuselage, I removed some of the tabs I think to get a perfect fit, I had to remove some of the mating surface of the lower wing to get it to fit. Result was no filler above, and very little below, probably due to meet removing the plastic irregularly...
  3. I agree Chris...with the fuselage built, add the upper wings, when dry add the intakes. The lower wings can then be adjusted to fit over the lower intakes. Any filler is then on the lower wing out of sight. With your build Mark, I'd suggest adding the lower half of the fuselage now, before adding the lower wing.
  4. Some fine Meat-boxes there...nice! I have a couple of CA Meteors in the stash, and whereas the airfix kit is superior in all areas, the CA kits are still build able. The worst part I found are the intakes....luckily Airfix's kit Has both narrow, and wide breather intake nacelles, which should help fix that problem...oh, and the undercarriage, but I understand that John Adams is working on white metal replacements which will be very handy.....
  5. You can't see the guns with the panels on Wez..., the canon apertures should be plugged though...
  6. I have the Red Roo set. The resin U.16 nose is quite thick so will take some bashing. Whether it fits OVER Airfix's undercarriage assembly is the main worry. The resin walls may need to be reduced internally, but externally it matches Airfix's plastic...
  7. Distorted? On any aircraft panels tend to "stress” where they are riveted or where they are constantly removed and replaced. Airfix have made a noble effort in replicating this here, on the panels aft of the gun bays and above the wheel wells. Regarding the landing light, it should really be flush...
  8. Indeed.....lhttp://www.vulcantothesky.org/news/757/15/Moving-XM573-in-1982.html
  9. All Vulcan B2's had IFR probes added at some stage, including XM573, a quick google search will provide photo's showing this. There was a mad rush to get them working again in 1982 for the long journey South! Regarding the terrain following nose radar 'thimble', XH558 was for a time a Maritime Radar Reconnaisance (MRR) machine, so didn't need it. All other Vulcans not involved in MRR should have had it fitted, due to their low level roles.
  10. I think rather than repeating a lot of this information here, a quick search in the "in progress" section will get you all the answers you need. The Vulcan is of course a very popular subject and there are plenty of how to articles on here.. Briefly though, standard upper surface colours were RAF Dark Green and RAF Medium Sea Grey, with either Wihite or RAF Light Aircraft Grey undersides. One aircraft at least had Dark Green and Dark Sea Grey uppers. Wrap around scheme was Dark Green and Dark Sea Grey. XH558 was different in that it was RAF Dark Green and Medium Sea Grey wraparound. Standard paints available in in Humbrol, Xtracolor, Xtracylic, etc ranges. I used Dymo tape and a Steel rule for my re-scribing. Add the upper wing to the built up fuselage shell before adding the lower section. The kits exhaust cans are woeful. These are best replaced by Freightdog items, though these are for Olympus 200 series Vulcans (XH558 for example) . For later 300 series Vulcans you'll need some scratch building. I'd recommend using whatever aftermarket items are available for intakes wheel bays etc,, Good luck! Edit: you should find this build helpful......http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/234975800-airfix-172-vulcan/page-1?hl=vulcan
  11. It is in the Airfix kit, along with flashed over holes in the wings for RP rails.
  12. Many thanks Robin, I doubt I'll be at the club for a while though..due to a dislocated shoulder and fractured humerous( I didn't laugh!!) I'm unable to drive for six weeks! I'll let you know when I can get up the club though...many thanks again...
  13. As for decal no 5 hmmmmm has to be 92Sqn with red/yellow chequerboard tail....
  14. A T7 for a start Ali! I'm planning on using a Classic Airframe fuselage and cockpit with Airfix wings undercarriage etc., or even a T7.5 using Airfix's tail unit.........
  15. Hannants new sheets aren't out yet.....Airfix caught them out too! Regardless I will need your sheet as I have to replace my CA version of 41Sqns XH480.... No rush Jonners, no rush...CA version, built ca. 2003.
  16. Only earlier F8's as they ( and the FR9 and PR10) had the earlier solid rear hood, as noted by Troy above. Earlier marks had totally different canopy arrangements, the F3 and F4 for instance had fixed rear portions. There are parts in the kit to suggest an FR9, so expect that in a new boxing. Thats about as modular as this kit goes, apart from an Australian F8, though a T7 could be produced with a new fuselage, tail planes, cockpit and canopy, using the kits wings etc., that might be a step too far for Airfix, but you never know...
  17. Any idea when the decals will be ready Jonners? And....looking at the art-work of the 19Sqn F8 with the chequer board fin, I think that was roundel blue, not the paler version shown. Edit: This is taken from the Coronation review book, with the late David Howley's artwork. I had to check that this was indeed 19 Sqn and not 43 Sqn! The only photo's I Can find are in B&W, but the tone is identical to the shade In the roundel. The darker shade is also included in the Airfix 1/72 kit and xtradecal sheets, and noted in Fighting Colours. AFAIK the paler shade only came into use on Phantoms. Indeed the initial version of Dark Blue on the FGR2 was all but black...
  18. Just seen this whoopee........but check that 19 Sqn blue was roundel blue not pale blue.....
  19. I had mine on pre- order, and it arrived this morning. Oh happy, happy days....at £30ish it is an absolute bargain. At £24 it's a steal! As Jonners says elsewhere, the lens covers for the FR9 are included on the clear sprue, plus flashed over location holes for RP rail, plus the clear antenna beacon for an Australian F8. So expect new boxings for these marks. It's a cracking kit.....
  20. Yeah, good luck with the treatment Bill....your Sea Venom is coming along rather nicely....
  21. And it landed today.....what a lovely kit!
  22. Just the one at £14.99? I'd better get in there quick.....thanks! Edit: they may have more than one...fill yer boots time!
  23. Don't know why, but I'd say £15 or thereabouts for a Tamiya F1/F3 is a bargain.....please tell me where I can get one? At that price I'll gladly butcher the thing, use the outer wings and tail unit and graft them on to the Airfix kit as the basis of a PR10..One thing is for sure, and who'd have thought we could say this a few years ago.....Airfix's decals will be vastly superior to any in the Tamiya kit....
