Bae Hawk XX 342-2 upper wings white or grey?
AnonymousAA72 replied to MartinSK's topic in Aircraft Modern
As its in the 'Raspberry Ripple' scheme , it should be white. The relates to the upper inner surface section only, with a few inches of white wraparound below. The lower inner wing section was Oxford Blue. -
Is the Airfix Avro Vulcan really that bad?
AnonymousAA72 replied to Michael51's topic in Aircraft Cold War
Yes, that's very possible...the last 'new' version I bought had wheels that were useless. Luckily I had some in the spares box from an old " in flight" build. -
Interesting post.......just a thought though in trying to match a shade or colour or finish of a 1:1 scale item to that of something considerably smaller. We all know, or have heard of scale effect, as the real "HSS" was or so it seems 'grainy' in some applications, how best to reproduce this in 1/72 or 1/48 or whatever? I'm still experimenting with my HSS applications, but did use Halford's bog standard Silver. Not sure what it was called now but it's normally with their primers. I found it got grainier as it aged, and I haven't used it for some few years now....

Is the Airfix Avro Vulcan really that bad?
AnonymousAA72 replied to Michael51's topic in Aircraft Cold War
Thanks for that Tim! Nice of you to say so. Some readers/ modellers on here may not have access to the relevant magazines now, but as the Vulcan is such a popular subject there are plenty of on-line builds as well..... -

"High Speed Silver"? More like "Warp Factor 9 Silver"! Lol. That is lovely and shiny. It will certainly help decalling and should tone down nicely with Light Sheen. Looking good! -
Is the Airfix Avro Vulcan really that bad?
AnonymousAA72 replied to Michael51's topic in Aircraft Cold War
No, it's not as bad as some make out.....in addition to the pointers above, I would suggest getting hold of an early issue of the kit, later examples have some poorly moulded smaller parts, where the tools are certainly showing their age. Of course the down side of that is that the decals In some of the earlier incarnations are pretty poor..... I would certainly suggest reading some of the build articles on the web, and in magazines. Plenty of tips and pointers there..... -

Wide breathers were fitted to most if not all Meteor F8's in both the WK and WL series' on the production line. Some say that earlier serialled Meteors were retro-fitted with wide breather, and that may have been so, much later in their lives. Some in the WH range may have had them fitted from new, but I think not in the VZ range. Which others in the VZ range have you seen..... -

Very nice build......one thing though, if you are building VZ495 you may find that this aircraft was fitted with "narrow breather" intakes, it looks like you have used the kit 's "Deep breathers".... -

1/48 Folland Gnat (fast build)
AnonymousAA72 replied to Flying Badger's topic in Work in Progress - Aircraft
what a cracking build..lovely. Just one observation, the serials should be Roundel blue, it looks like you've printed yours in black... -
I just happen to have the same set here at the moment, and it certainly does look like your version has two sheets stuck together! Is that possible? Mine is certainly not showing what yours does!

Thanks John, yes that explains it a lot better.

Wiggaly amps Canberra B(I)8 WT333
AnonymousAA72 replied to canberra kid's topic in Work in Progress - Aircraft
It's a massive old bird in 1/48th John, no doubt about it. Now a question on the Ailerons. I read on the SIG that both droop when power is shut down 2°. Have I understood that correct? Was that a feature on all marks of Canberra? -

Hawker Hunter T7 4FTS RAF Valley
AnonymousAA72 replied to Colin W's topic in Hawker Hunter Single Type Group Build II
As an alternative 16sqn used Hunters when their Buccaneers were temporarily grounded. This included a 4FTS T7. Their black and yellow 'Saint' badge was overlaid on the 4FTS badge......of course if you haven't a 16Sqn badge........... -
Revell 1/72 Hunter F.6, quick build
AnonymousAA72 replied to alex's topic in Hawker Hunter Single Type Group Build II
Regarding 66 Sqn markings, Revell actually amended this on some of their later F.6 issues.....I may have a spare set somewhere... Nice Build BTW! -
Steven Bond's Meteor book lists EE517 as the first F.4. Of those aircraft in this EE batch quite a few went to Argentina (and they never had Mk3's -apart fro EE470 for training) the first chronologically being EE526. For the high-speed record attempts it says that two F.3's EE454 and '455 were brought up to F.4 standard. Further attempts at the record attempt were made by F4's. I think it reasonable to assume then that '517 was indeed the first 'true' F.4...................;-)

Regarding re-paints....Patrick Martin's book states..." ZE354 'R', one of four Phantom's known to have been re-painted, the others were ZE357, ZE351 and ZE367.."

Hi Gary, I think it unlikely all Were actually repainted...certainly the one put out to pasture at Manston 20 odd years ago(!) wasn't. That was very faded and very "green-blue" ......Most references suggest that only the three mentioned were re-painted. Clearly there was at least one more....
