Buccaneer S2B Airfix 1/48th
AnonymousAA72 replied to AnonymousAA72's topic in Work in Progress - Aircraft
Thanks Bob, it has been fairly quick actually - I only started it mid-November, most of that time was fiddling about with the cockpit. Once that was in - and I will need to add a bit more- it built up surprisingly swiftly. No more modellng for a few days, but I would hope to start painting next week...... -

I managed to persuade the intakes on today....a strange arrangement from Airfix to say the least, but on they sit!! i had previously sprayed the intake tunnels white, as I had planned building a MSG overall S2B, but my current plans are for a camouflaged jet participating in operation Pulsator, so I will need to respray them grey, or add FOD covers? Wings next...... -

Hi Chris, I will cheat next time (next time?) and use a Neomega resin cockpit set.Yes, still visiting RMWeb occasionally, particularly when I need to know "how to" do something. I Start looking at Adrian's Westerham layout, and get stuck there for ages!! My layout is progressing. Not done much more of my "H" class as I'm building up the courage to tackle the chassis! I'll get some photo's in the new year and start posting on there again. Cheers... -

You're right Martin. With the fuselage twisted, teased together, glued and stuck firm(ish), it's reduced the warped nature of the parts. Surprisingly there was not a great deal of filler required..though a lot of sanding! I hope to post some more pic's tomorrow, and then get the wings on... -

Thanks Pete, Rogers Profanisauras Eh? I could have really done with that to be honest, as I had indeed exhausted my stash of Anglo-Saxon cusses!! And, sad as I am..I do happen to have another waiting in the wings, though I may flog that..and hope that a shiny new Bucc., will be issued .......but in the meantime......my air rakes will be open, but wings down... -

Time to think about getting the fuselage together. First thing first though. Noseweight. My favourite method is lead weight encased in milliput with some superglue to ensure it stays put. the lower nose is thus treated...I've added a needle. This will give the radome a nice sharp tip. And yes, I have managed to stab myself a couple of times!! I fully expected a battle in aligning the upper and lower parts, and in this respect the kit didn't disappoint!! It fought me all the way, and some more. I just glued it bit by bit, starting with the nose, then the intakes, rear fuselage and then the wings. I used various clamps and masking tape to hold it all in place.- 105 replies

Thanks Martin, still a bit to add there. But in the meantime some progress... I was in a bit of a quandary as to how I would furnish the cockpit. I opted to use PE whereas I think I should have gone with resin...next time maybe. So The PE was added and painted. How to replicate the instruments? I could paint them, and a wash of black thinned paint would have worked - to a degree, but I thought of how good and effective pre-coloured PE is. Unfortunately none was available for the Buccaneer, so I thought I'd experiment with Airfix's decals OVER the PE I had installed..bear with me on this! I thought that by soaking the decals in Micro Sol and Set , they would sink into the recessed relief detail in the photo etch. In some respects this has worked okay, though it is somewhat restricted by the quality of the decals, which are a bit out of register in places. Here are the relevant parts ready for addition... Not too happy with the navigator's station! Luckily most will be hidden by the blast screen and additional plumbing and the seat of course (offset by 2" of course!!) -
Absolutely, history should be re-written if and when new evidence emerges. The author of this offers no new evidence whatsoever...

Well said! This puts any of these clap-trap attempts to re-write history firmly in its place......

If only Edgar was still with us...he'd put this utter garbage in its place!

Revell 1/48 RAF Tornado - Landing Oct 2015

Basically just leave off the FLIR pod, and make sure you have both canon for a GR1, or none for a GR1A. Use the kit's original upper fuselage. There were different layouts in the cockpit, but I expect the kits parts are quite generic here. -

There are some pic's on Fritag's build thread. The wing tips look a bit too rounded, but I have one on order, so I'll have a good look when it arrives.- 56 replies

Sword 1/48 English Electric Lightning T.4 and T.5

I have a T4 on order, looking forward to this kit a lot. Their 1/72nd kit was nice, but a few mm short in the nose area. I hope they've not made the same mistake on this one! -

Look perfectly okay to me Andy, have you not seen the Redstreak and the Firetop before? -
I've not come across 1/48th scale TTTE GR1 decals, only in 1/72, from Modeldecal and The freeby in SAM. Be nice if there are some.....
-
Additionally, by the time the GR1 entered service in 1982-3? Wraparound camouflage had been in regular use for a good 6 or 7 years, so the answer to that question is No, in service machines didn't have LACG undersides..

The raised panel lines are very fine. The problem may be, that those panel lines where parts meet will be obliterated when the required filler is applied and subsequently sanded down. I re-scribed my last Vulcan, but on my next one I'll follow the "draw them in" method...that's of course if that build is prior to Airfix doing the decent thing.....are you listening Airfix?

Thanks Andy, funny thing, I had ordered a NeoMega cockpit set - a good 15 years ago I reckon, and the Equipage wheels were included! I don't think that I actually bought them as such! I'm not generally a great fan of rubber wheels on kits, but as I had these tucked away I decided they had to be used. There's a bit of flash on the rubber, but i've managed to file that off. The set is already a decade and a bit old, I just hope now they are out of the packing, they don't know rot! The kit's wheels are rather good, so I would have had no problem in using them. And yes I do hope that these efforts are rewarded by Airfix! I had hoped that a Bucc., would be Kinetic's big Telford announcement........sadly no! -

Thanks Phil.... Just a couple more for now.... An upside down view of the cockpit walls. I've had to scrape away some ofth eplastic card, so as the tub's fit. Photoetch panels added to the sills. And a coat of grey! Paint at last! I've been constantly test fitting the cockpit parts and the upper and lower shells of the fuselage. The old saying that it fit's where it touches doesn't apply to this kit!! It doesn't even fit where it touches!!! Of course my major concern is that this kit is indeed unbuildable (though I have built a couple previously!) and that the time already amassed on this build will ultimately be wasted!! Time will tell....onwards and erm...further onwards - hopefully!
