  1. Very good morning to Everybody! I had to bend my back into my kit storage box really deep for this kit... Happy Christmas to All!

  2. This kind of thing is precisely why its getting more difficult to persuade those with the rights or archive data to release them. Someone asked about the rights and how they were obtained - they weren't donated, they were purchased at great cost from British Aerospace in 1993. To our knowledge its the only time BAE have sold an aircraft design in any form, and there were a lot of clauses in the contract about how they have to be managed. Our 'preservation group' has successfully carried out its duties as the Design Authority for the Shackleton for 21 years now, a third of the types existence. This has included supplying information to the MOD and SAAF. Unfortunately you can be sick of the argument over rights all you want - intellectual property is still property, and funds generated through the usage of it is what will get our aircraft in the air. THAT is our primary objective, not making it possible for a company to make a plastic model, accurate or otherwise. Basically people are suggesting we should just let anyone crack on regardless, without heed to accuracy or the fact they're using a design (not a logo) that is someone elses property? How far do you think we'd get if we put our own model out but in a blue Revell style box? Not far. Just roll over because we're a 'preservation group'? Never going to happen. Yeah, bah humbug. Revell were rude to us, Airfix were the exact polar opposite. Revell then tried to gain use of our drawings through deception via two other third parties; after we'd told them no. Who would you support had it been you to choose? Why should we co-operate given that they wouldn't take no for an answer, and expected us to bow down and lay our 16 tons of archive material and the aircraft keys out before them, at a time as and when they demanded, just for the hell of it? Despite their attitude problem we were willing to let them look around our aircraft at a time to suit our volunteers, as we don't bar anyone access. They chose not to. Overall, Revell might be able to make a fairly accurate representation of a Shackleton if they use LIDAR or similar, but only externally and only of that particular aircraft. Over 40 years and several rebuilds they became that dissimilar that they had individual drawing sets for the last 12 AEW2 aircraft. There's only one out there that is any use for this kind of imaging, and that's WR960 in the Museum of Science and Industry at Manchester. All the others have been modified, hacked about, or robbed. As for getting internal detail right and how things fit, I'll remain sceptical. This is, of course, if Revell manage to grasp the differences between marks. The mention I made earlier that they didn't get the difference between MR2 and MR3 is not anecdotal, it was what happened when they turned up at Gatwick Aviation Museum to look at MR3/3 WR982. Funnily enough they also accused us of of being incorrect regarding Shackleton exhausts, after we answered a question regarding fishtail stubs/exhaust pipes - as our answers didn't match with the extensive collection of 500 Shackleton photos they had to refer to at the time. I wish I was kidding... This is what prompted my comments about using the drawings for accuracy. I'm not preaching 'Avro' as the only way forward, just that by using drawings, you get a factory fresh unmolested Shackleton, built as initially designed. If they could do it any other way, they would have done it before now. Regards, Rich W High Priest from the unique Shackleton Temple of the Avro Church

  3. Hello! Here are several photos of one of the kits i finished this year. It`s the Kinetic offering, which is highly recomended. The paints used were: Lifecolor UA 113 Italian Light Blue Grey 1 (FS 36307) UA 034 Light Gray (FS 36251) UA 145 French Blue Grey (FS 35237) This model is published in this month issue of Airfix Model World. I wish you all a great Christmas! José Pedro

  5. Here's my last completion for 2014, Trumpeter's 1/700 scale model of the HMS Barham modified to represent the ship at the time of the Battle of Cape Matapan. Colourcoats used for the AP507B and AP507C camouflage pattern with Teak and AP507A used for the decks and the RN White for the stripe on the mainmast and blast bags. WEM's etch for the kit was also used, although I substituted Quad Pom Poms for the Octuples on the bridge structure using photos as reference. The modifications to change from as sunk to Matapan condition mainly consisted of changing the platform on "B" turret to have an UP projector instead of the quad '50 and leaving off the forward AA platform that was also mounted on "B" turret as well as the one on "Y" turret. The Walrus was painted using Humbrol enamels and actually has the countershading on the lower wing as per the biplane version of the Temperate Sea Scheme. The roundels were sourced from Tamiya's 1/700 Repulse as the kit supplied ones were too big (1/350?) and the wrong style. Before painting: Walrus: After painting: As always, comments and criticism welcome! Mike.

  6. I really enjoy F-RSINs injection molded kits. Fun to build and you get subjects often found nowhere else. This odd looking fellow apparently was still flying between London and Paris til 1971. A full double decker that we have only now got back to with the A380. Cheers, Mike And the "with something else" shot, the Lufthansa Do-X, the 'Jumbo' of her era.

  7. And I should hope so too! I know it's a hackneyed old argument. but who actually paid for the blessed real things at the end of the day? I'm heartily sick of all this 'we own the rights so you can't have a plastic model of it to play with' from aircraft manufacturers, the MOD & now preservation groups?!! Surely it would be in everyone's best interest's (especially the vast majority of us who frequent BM!) that model manufacturers get as much assistance as possible to get their product as 'right' as possible? Bah humbug K

"Me as High Priest from the unique Shackleton Temple of the Avro Church, I declare solemnly in front of the Faithful here united that Revell's designers can't produce a new and accurate Shackleton kit without my God's light." Have you paid rights to the descendants of Sir Ernest Shackleton? Come on boy! V.P.

  9. Hi all GB'ers Just wanted to wish all of you and your families a Very Merry Christmas. I also wanted to thank all the hosts and members that have, with your support made these Britmodeller's Group Builds the success that they are. This past year we had the best supported Group Build that we have ever had since the start of Britmodeller way back in 2007. We also, without me noticing had our 100th GB. None of this would have happened without your support and enthusiasm. So you all have a great day tomorrow. Thanks and Happy Christmas Mish

  11. As part of a trainer GB on the ATF I decided to convert the Airfix Anson into the floatplane trainerZ*RB 3158 (ex N4927 sent to SA 14/1/1941) of SAAF No.35 Squadron, Congella, South Africa. It was used for instructing crews on waterbourne techniques before they moved onto the squadron's Sunderlands. I used the floats from a Frog Blackburn Shark, and the turret blank from the Special Hobby Anson kit. Plenty of plastic rod, mix of spare, home printed and aftermarket decals. In-progress shots can be seen here. Best Rich

  12. Thanks Keith. We do our best to help anyone, but the approach from Revell was not a good one by any means, and they failed to understand (or maybe ignored?) that we had another company involved already with a committment in place to them. I know what you mean regarding the full size and the model, but the issue is in the design itself - not the scale. We walk a fine line in what we can do and what we can't do, or risk handing everything back to BAE due to the terms of the 1993 contract of sale of the rights. To do so would doom WR963 never to fly again, what with how close we're getting would be tragic. Once you get a model in your mitts (Airfix or Revell), come over to Coventry one Saturday and we'll let you crawl around WR963 to get your model as good as it can be, and have a good chat about all things Shackleton over a coffee. The above offer is open to anyone else too. We don't do barriers around our Shackleton! Merry Christmas, Rich

  13. Hi everybody, I hope you are all enjoying Christmas time ! Here are a few pictures of my recently built models : 1) HASEGAWA's Draken, a nice and easy kit to put together, almost OOB with the addition of EDUARD's photoetched set for the interior and mirrors : 2) EDUARD's ALBATROS, here in lithuanian markings, OOB with EDUARD's mirrors : and finally REVELL's F 16 B (here a F 16 BM) with MODEL ALLIANCE decals, OOB with the right underside pod that I borrowed in ACADEMY's F 16 kit: These kits were a walk in the park compared to the AMODEL ones I built already ! More to come !! Cheers, Pierre

  24. Back in the days when television only came in two flavours and turned into a tone generator after midnight, there was a revolutionary sci-fi show that appeared, with a starship that looked like nothing else on screen. It wasn't called The Original Series then, because it was The Only Series, and I remember saving up my pocket money for an AMT Enterprise, and painting it with domestic gloss paint because it was bigger than anything else I'd made. When the refit Enterprise appeared on screen I was blown away by the design. Paul Olsen's book is a great read that describes its construction and painting. Go and buy his book here http://1701rebuild.com/ and help to rebuild it, it's a fascinating read. So, I was inspired to build a refit ship and I wanted to light it. One of the Polar Lights 1/350 kits would have been nice, but: i) costs an arm and a leg ii) I've got nowhere to display one iii) I've got nowhere to build one I found an AMT/ERTL 1/537 kit on eBay, described as "part started." How can that be? Either it's started or it isn't, surely. Anyway, I bought it for a fiver, which I thought was a bargain. The only bit missing was from the oversized shuttlecraft which I didn't want to use anyway. The box looked as though it had been sat on, the instructions were missing and the secondary hull, warp nacelles and pylons had been stuck together with something that resembled toffee. A night in the freezer for the glued parts enabled me to separate them and clean them up. Now there was an early issue of this kit known as the "smoothie" or "Brazilian," without any panel trenches. This wasn't one of them. This had deep grooves all over it that reminded me of that hideous stone cladding that appeared all over council houses in the 1980s. Three tubes of Humbrol filler and several sheets of wet-and-dry paper solved that. Happily the Autumn was dry and warm and I could do that job on the patio, otherwise I'd have filled the whole house with dust. I had thought about doing a WIP, but feared the project would fall apart at any stage, so didn't. As assembly progressed, the hull was filled with LEDs and optical fibres, and a couple of circuits from Velleman, MK102 flashing LEDs and MK147 dual white LED stroboscope. These are postage-stamp sized circuit boards that cost about a fiver and can be built in a few minutes with a soldering iron. I fitted them inside the stand together with an on/off switch, 9v battery terminal and a PSU socket. My old electronics and wiring tutors would turn in their graves at the sight of it but it fitted. Just. The aztec decals were a free download from Starship Modeler, http://www.starshipmodeler.com/tech/cz_mask.htm laser-printed onto decal sheet. Thanks guys. The kit decals were fairly bad, as expected from something that had been in someone's loft for years, but went on after a bit of persuasion. It still needs a few details to be finished, but I thought I'd put a couple of pictures here before it gets knocked onto the floor and wrecked. It's had a couple of near misses so far. Backgrounds come from Astronomy Picture of the Day, http://apod.nasa.gov/apod/astropix.html and the dodgy Photoshopping is my own. So the whole thing probably cost less than £40, and for that I'm quite happy. It makes a good table lamp. Merry Christmas everyone, live long and prosper through 2015, Paul

  26. Santa was good to me this year so I thought I'd share this build with you just to spread some Christmas cheer! Guinness World Records are, of course, known worldwide, unlike their modelling branch which has produced these little beauties: The set comes with three main sprues; two pairs and a singleton, and a set of clears... Just noticed on the photo that these are upside down - much watch that during assembly. At first the instructions look pretty comprehensive, and then I noticed they only show a build for one of the types (the 119): I hope I'm going to be able to interpret these for other types. Yet to be seen if my modelling skills are up to this. Step 1 is to remove the parts from the sprue. I've chosen the 277 to build first as the colours are brightest. Removal of the parts was pretty straightforward with, amazingly, no additional mould creep to remove or extrusion marks to fill in: Careful removal of the wing root blanks is necessary prior to main wing assembly. This is also a good shot of the cabin detail and general quality of this moulding. Notice the split in the fuselage here (more on that later)... Main wing assembly. Notice that the wing only goes through this far - you then have the nerve-wracking job of easing the fuselage split apart enough to take to wing, and then closing up again afterwards... Next problem is that the tailplane has a flat profile and no help on which way up it goes (both sides shown here): No help in the BM walk-arounds or on the Internet either. Perhaps I'll be able to pick up a book at the next show, but for now I'll have to guess 277 side up. Here she is assembled ready for fitting of the nose. Love those panel lines... they're OOB, no scribing required!! The kit comes with five noses from 1 to 5 grams and, again disappointingly, no guidance on which fits what model other than "to try them and see which works best". Huh! Pretty poor show I know, and not what we've come to expect at BM. Well that's it for now and I hope you enjoyed the build. I probably won't post the other type builds as I expect to share them with the family and, to be honest, they're not as serious about scale modelling as I am. And I probably won't post in RFI. The jokes probably a bit thin by now. Merry Xmas all and here's to a great modelling and sharing 2015!

  27. Blimey things are getting a bit heavy on here about who owns what rights to what regarding the original aircraft. It is Christmas by the way. For Pete's sake the original aircraft is almost old enough to be copyright laws expired (that was a joke by the way). Surely Revell are smart enough to realise the difference between a Mk 2 and a Mk 3 , come on really! Also what is to stop Revell going along to the end of the runway in Paphos Cyprus or Pasedina in America or wherever there are old airframes and just measuring one up? (or lazering it to take a leaf out of Airfix's book). I'm just highly delighted that we are actually going to get a (possibly two) modern 1/72 version of the aircraft that I will not have to hack about to build a decent representation of. Regarding the price would anyone like to know how much the Aeroclub conversion set and decals were going for until a few days ago? Looooaaaads of money, alot more that £40 anyway.

  28. Final update. Instead of waiting up for Santa Claus, I decided I would use the downtime to finish this little beast. SWMBO is resting after her surgery on Tuesday. (It has been an eventful week to say the least) The kids are at the grandparents. And, I have time to myself. All the very time consuming and what seems like a never ending chore of little bits and pieces to put together to finish this kit was done. The undercarriage and doors had to be completed and put on; the weapons pylon and weapons had to be finished, decaled and put on, the canopy had to be attached; the wing pods needed to be affixed; and there were some miscellaneous bits and finishing pieces that needed to be attached. So, Makoto Kikuchi’s IdolM@ster Typhoon is now complete. Maybe sometime tomorrow if I have the time I can take it outside and get some shots in better light. As always, all comments are welcome. It will be Christmas in about 30 minutes. I hope everyone’s Christmas, or holiday of choice, is wonderful, glorious and meaningful. And, I wish everyone all the best for the upcoming year and hope your modeling wishes and goals are met beyond your wildest imagination.

  29. Here is the last one for this year, the Admiral's Wild Weasel. The kit is the 1/48 Hobby Boss F/A-18D. The model has a couple of issues. For example the fitting is not that good, panellines misplaced and some important details missing. The Eduard BigEd on the other hand fixed a lot of the details and Wolfpack provided the folded wings. On this model I use the salt weathering technique for the first time, not completely to my satisfaction, but it wasn't that difficult either. The base was scratch build with tie-down pods by Flight-line. The tractor comes from Kinetic. Marry Christmass everybody!

  34. These two aircraft were purchased in April 2003 from the company Metalika in Bulgaria. It's reported they flew several test and evaluation flights, but did not enter any combat. It's probable that these two aircraft were flown to Lome, Togo in November 2004 to prevent their destruction by the French forces in the country who were retaliating against the air force for an attack on a French aid station that killed and wounded multiple French Marines, by blowing up every aircraft they could find. I don't know if the aircraft were confiscated or abandoned but as of last year, they were still rotting away on the fringes of the airfield.

  37. After last years disappointing four completions I've had a much better run this time, doubling my output: First off, a refugee from 2013, Hasegawa's 1/700 IJN Zuiho in 1944 condition: Next, Hasegawa's 1/72 Douglas SBD-5 Dauntless in RNZAF colours: Then Hasegawa's 1/72 Mitsubishi A6M3 Model 22: After that, it was a long time resident of the stash, Hasegawa's Mitsubishi Ki-67 Hiryu (Peggy): The next completion was Trumpeter's 1/700 Soviet Nuclear Missile Cruiser Frunze: I then decided to do a bit of armour, Tamiya's 1/35 StuG III Ausf G "Finnish Army": Airfix's new tool 1/72 Tiger Moth came next, finished in RAAF colours: Now the final completion for the year, Trumpeter's 1/700 model of the battleship HMS Barham in March 1941 condition: An honorable mention goes to Italeri's 1/72 UH-1B "Huey" and Airfix's new tool Blenheim Mk I in the same scale, started but not finished. Comment's and criticism welcome! Mike.

  38. Not as many as usual this year -- I normally reckon on one build per month, but moving house mid year meant quite a long hiatus before the workbench was up and running again. So, with no more excuses, on with the (rather brief) show... Avro 720 Mirage, Polar Lights, 1/25 Fokker E.V, Eduard, 1/48 Toyota 2000GT, Hasegawa, 1/24 Datsun 240ZG, Hasegawa, 1/24 Lexus LFA, Tamiya, 1/24 BMW 507, John Surtees, Revell, 1/24 Alfa Romeo Giulia Sprint GTA, Tamiya, 1/24 Jaguar XJ220, Tamiya, 1/24 ...there might be another completion by the end of the year, but I suspect that will be the lot! Happy New Modelling Year 2015, everyone! all the best, M.

  46. Thanks, Chris. I've not seen that True Details PE fret before. I wonder if they ever sold it separately, or if it was just included with the Encore kit. The HPM aftermarket set that I bought has the resin supports for the underwing aerials, but the PE doesn't include the aerials themselves. Since they did include the fuselage aerials I thought that was kind of odd. Luckily, the PE included with the Special Hobby kit includes the underwing aerials. (But they don't include the supports - go figure!) Thanks! It's even more incredible that I haven't broke any of them off yet. Thanks! You do some nice work yourself. Thanks, Keith! I'm kind of pleased with how the aerials came out myself. The alignment is not perfect, so there's room for improvement! That's a fact, for sure! But I think my thumb and forefinger will fit nicely right underneath the wing root. Thanks, Trevor. So, this is 1:72 scale? That explains why the parts are so small!! Cheers, Bill PS. Bomb racks almost done! PPS. Merry Christmas to everyone, and a happy new year in 2015! With those new Airfix releases, it's going to be an amazing year. Hopefully by the end of my treatments in April it will also be a great cancer-free new year!!

  47. Modeldoc if you have something to share then please do, if not then please keep your comments to yourself. I have noticed on more than one other thread you have put these cryptic comments leading us to believe that you know something that the rest of us don't, however if you are not willing to share anything you may claim to know then please don't comment. It's quite annoying TBH.

  48. The Avro Shackleton has a big place in my heart, and for very big reasons. You'll have noted my Avatar is even a picture of a shack Ever since I was a young kid of 8, I was captivated by the Shackleton, my grand father served on the aircraft for many of his years as a navigator/ signaller, His living room was full of framed Shackleton pictures and artwork, he was based in the RAF at St Mawgan (which is how we came to be in cornwall), and also in squadrons all over the world inc 205 squadron in Singapore. He told me many a stories, about flights to Egypt, to the middle east and how a restored shack came to be stuck in the Sahara, in the early 90s, which is still there I remember a story he told me about a SAR mission in the far east to find a missing Shackleton that unfortunately went down in the Indian ocean, or south china sea, They eventually found the area the plane went down after a local fisherman wrote the words B205 on the beach with sand. We lost my grand father in 2010 and after we cleared everything out I found his log books which are now in my hands, a few pages I'll share with you. His flight logs, a picture of the shack he flew on and a picture of B205 written in sand on a beach. http://www.westbriton.co.uk/servicemen-mark-50th-anniversary-air-crash/story-11459592-detail/story.html I have been wanting and waiting to build a shackleton for him for many years, and so wanted to before he passed away, when i was a teenager I built him a revell boxing from a frog kit man years ago, but that was when my skills were poor and it was a complete mess, I have been waiting for a state of the art Shackleton model for a very long time, if anything but to give me closure on losing not only my grandfather, but a friend and the person whom inspired my interest in aircraft. Thank you Airfix and thanks everyone for reading. I'll be building a dam load more than 1
