  3. I suspect you a probably all bored to death with Blackbirds but I thought I should close out the commission properly with a summary of the builds and their differences. I promise no more Blackbirds for the foreseeable future. Once again, thankyou to everyone who help along the way. A-12, this is where it all began, single seat, NMF in the beginning with them all finally being painted the normal Black we all know. Kiwi Resin conversion for the nose and tail, additional Q-BAY windows, some Eduard Etch and all painted in Tamiya Acrylics. A-12 Titanium Goose, this is the training version of the A-12 with a second raised canopy for the trainer. Kiwi Resin A-12 conversion for the nose and tail, scratch built second cockpit as it is vastly different than the SR-71B in shape and size, some Eduard Etch and all painted in Tamiya Acrylics. YF-12A, OOB with a specific finish referenced from some images of the early airframe, just the addition of some Eduard Etch and all painted in Tamiya Acrylics. M-21, this is in fact a normal A-12 with a second cockpit installed in the Q-Bay, primary function was to be the carrier vessel for the GTD-21B Drone. All of the 1/72 kits have been modelled with the Drone carried on the SR-71 which is not correct. The SR-71 never carried the Drone so the standard kit was modified again with the Kiwi Resin A-12 Conversion, finished with the some Eduard Etch and painted in Tamiya Acrylics. SR-71A, built OOB with the exception of some Eduard Etch, painted in Tamiya Acrylics SR-71B, built OOB with the exception of some Eduard Etch, painted in Tamiya Acrylics SR-71C, this is a really interesting airframe is it is made up of the front section of a functional mock up of the SR-71 and the rear section of a crashed YF-12A. Aircraft was built to replace a crashed SR-71B, note the short tail and the raised second tandem canopy. The aircraft was known as the bast**d" because it required constant trim adjustments to keep her flying straight. As per the others she is finished with some additional Eduard Etch and painted with Tamiya Acrylics. YF-12C, this is essential a demilitarised SR-71, it was given the YF-12C designation to hide its true identity, I believe that the Air force did not want anyone to know that NASA had one of their Blackbirds. The airframe served as a test bed for various NASA projects. As per the others she is finished with some additional Eduard Etch and painted with Tamiya Acrylics. SR-71 Big Tail, this is a normal SR-71 that was refitted with an extended tail for additional surveillance equipment. I had some fun trying to get the correct length for the tail, finally resolved when I got a copy of an old Wings Magazine article on the airframe. Naturally the tail is scratch built, quite a challenge as no part of it stays a constant size and I only had some images to work from. As per the others she is finished with some additional Eduard Etch and painted with Tamiya Acrylics. Thanks for looking. Danny

  4. Good day, guys. It's my next model. On May 1940 this airplane was brought down by Bf-110. The crew 2nd lieutenant Pauw and captain Ballangee was killed. What was made with model: 1. All wing and hood edges was grinded from inside; 2. Drilled approximately 200 holes for more accurate simulation of perforated flaps; 3. Wrong joints of panels was putty and cutting the new one; 4. Riveted; 5. Added belts and devices to the cockpit; 6. New antenna mast made from copper rod; 7. Ropes from nylon thread for beading; 8. Pitot tube made from copper tubes; 9. Wings headlamps cut into wing and made from “Elf” set, closed transparent tape; 10. Navigation lights also from “Elf” set; 11. Cartridge cases holes cut; 12. Guns made from the needles; 13. Replaced the engine (from “Vector”); 14. All markings made by stencils. Paints – Tamiya, Gunze Sangyo, Alclad. Varnishes – Future and Tamiya. Made pre-post shading, washing and oil points. Some macro and photos from building process.

  6. Hey guys, i would like to show you my last finished kit It was built as part of the Mustang STGB, using Revell´s kit, Quickboost wheels and exhausts, mix of PE parts, which i had around and Kits-World decals. The main problem with the Revell´s kit is the canopy as it does not fit at all. So i decided to do a little surgery, cut out the area behind cockpit and altered the area infront of cockpit and used spare Hasegawa canopy. Also i used propeller from Airfix P-51D. Full WIP if anyone is interested is here http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/234965165-p-51b-revell-duo-shangri-la-b-racer/ I decided to ignore the wheel wells this time, so i was only focusing the cockpit and the fitting of the Hasegawa canopy. After some work on preshading and "pretoning" the OD (which i almost killed with too thick last layer.. gogo me ), this is the result some details around And all my mustangs so far, happy together Note: I forgot to add the tail wheel doors before taking the shots, but i was too lazy to make new shots after.. Sorry Thanks a lot guys for watching and hope you like her at least a bit Have a nice day

It is HUGE - - which makes it difficult to photograph (at least that's my excuse) 'Flying' over its sea base..... .... and a bit of photo manipulation..... Ken

  12. Academy Warrior APC 1/35th scale (original boxing) 'Operation Granby' Iraq 1991 Warrior pics here Inspired by several Warriors of the Staffordshire Regt viewed by myself and other Club Members during our visit to Fallenbostel, Germany in September 1991 shortly after their return from Iraq Modifications needed The original Academy kit was modified as the frontal Armour was out of alignment due to the transmission covers being too wide This was reduced by 1.5mm either side and the stowage box adjusted accordingly Both side Armour packs were moved forwards a full 3mm so the fire suppression handle (left side) could be seen through the round opening This also allowed the camouflage screen prongs to be fitted correctly either side at the rear The Turret basket had the bottom raised by 2mm by reducing the vertical stanchions supporting it This stopped the basket catching on the rear deck fittings and gave the basket the correct profile

  13. Just finished today, the Azur Vought V-156F "Vindicator in Aeronavale Service": I enjoyed building this, it went together pretty well and has a very nicely detailed cockpit which I had a bit of trouble fitting inbetween the fuselage halves and this left me with a bit of a step on one side of the canopy. It looks a bit long on its legs to me, too. I ended up using the Techmod decals for this aircraft as the kit rudder stripes had the designation and serial number text printed on them - that would have been okay but one side was a mirror image of the other so the text on on side was backwards! Hopefully they will have noticed this and will fix it in subsequent releases. The canopy was lovely and clear but you still can't see much of the inside, it was a bit of a pain to mask but at least it was nearly all straight lines for the framing. The aerial wire is lycra thread, apart from that (and the decals) it is OOB. This model represents No.12 of Escadrille AB1 based at Boulogne-Alprecht in the winter of 1939-40. I started off painting this a mixture of PRU Blue and Medium Sea Grey but it looked too dark compared to the few pictures I could find, and I ended up painting it more-or-less pure Medium Sea Grey in the end - I don't know if anyone is certain what colour these aircraft were supposed to have been anyway, every model I have seen has been a different shade, mine probably errs too far from the blue end of the spectrum. I got a new backdrop cloth and I would like to thank Oddball for introducing me to the idea of using an Optilamp as a light source for pictures, they seem better than my usual so thanks, Odds Cheers, Stew

  14. The grey slate base arrived for this today so I installed the battery holder, finished off the wiring and took these RFI shots: The slate is supposed to represent a fused, post-nuclear holocaust landscape. The build review for the kit can be found here. With the lights on: I tried to take some night time shots, some of which worked better than others: It was a nice, easy kit to build and a lot of fun. I hope you like.

  16. Dear Fellow Modellers I hope you find this aircraft a suitable topic for Britmodel?? This is one of the new AZ model releases in their HQ standard mold. They make excellent kits but you need to ditch the canopy and replace with a Falcon vac-form and at least in my case get yourself Quickboost resin exhausts. The markings are for 132 Sq at Detling flown by Flt .Lt. Sumpter thanks to Xtradecal. My favourite anecdote about the MkIX was from Pierre Clostermann who to escape 2 FW190s bent on his destruction put his MkIX into a corkscrewing climb knowing that above 20,000' his 2-stage Merlin would kick in and effectively save his life! 18. Hi Steve, Woody, Wolwe and giemme - thanks for the comments. It's a lovely kit to work with and the only slightly tricky bit was actually this morning fitting the tracks - but they're on as are the side panels. Next time I get chance to work on this I'm going to attempt the camouflage. Kind regards, Stix

  21. Thanks Pete! HEY ALL, More with the lighting. A couple o' pictures of parts. Here are the eight double spot lights. These are the eight spots wired up and ready to install. A close up. In this photo you can see how I have mounted the fourway switch. This has been all secured and is ready to plug and play. Here you can see the basic wire layout. I will try to keep as much of the wiring inside the beams, so I don't clutter up the bottom side. This is the mounting of the first double spot light. Here it is with the lights turned on. Now I just have to install seven more of these and then the rest of the singles. I'll be back!

I found this website which has a photo showing the wing root as removed from the fuselage and it gives a good view of the flap section and how its leading edge is also the line of the rear spar. http://sas.raf38group.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=1125&start=70

  26. Hello all, This is my next project. I was going to put up 3 separate threads but thought it might be better to combine them all into one. Some 1/48 Israeli Air Force jets - Kinetic F-16I Sufa, Hasegawa A-4N Skyhawk and a Hasegawa F-4E Phantom ll (this will be a refurbished old build. Since starting, I've added an F-16A, F-16C and Kfir to the proceedings. F-16 and aftermarket: Still have some Python IVs to add along with a set of Eduard RBF tags. This jet will be marked as a machine from 119 'The Bat' squadron. A-4N: Just need to order a resin seat. This jet will be marked as an example from 102 'Flying Tiger' squadron. F-4E: Built this a good while ago but i'm not happy with the paint or finish, so I'm going to strip it back and refurb it. The kit has an Airdoc refuelling probe, an Airdoc sidewinder launch rail (for the forward sparrow recess), Quickboost seats, Steel Beach FOD covers and some Airwaves etch around the canopy. Decals were from Hi-decal, which I will be using for the refurb, and all the weapons are from spares. The decals: This machine will be marked as an example from 107 'Knights of the Orange Tail' squadron. I'll post up pictures of the sprues of each kit when I come to build them and any additional aftermarket. If I get an F-15C, I might make it a quadruple Dave

  27. Hey everyone, While this isn't really 'armour', I couldn't think of where else to post it. So Mods, please feel free to move! This is the little 1/72 Fujimi Deck Tractor from their Flight Deck Crew set 35001. Built out of box but turned the front wheels to make it look a bit more interesting. Will probably add the driver at a later stage and maybe some scale chains if I can find them (anyone know where?) Gotta hate the macro setting on the camera - just spotted nasty seams on the wheel chock! The WIP build log is here and thanks for looking!

  28. Hello All After 4 months I am calling this finished. Here is my interpretation of the YF-23 Black Widow ll (PAV l - call sign 'Spider') It is the Hobbyboss kit, which is based more on PAV ll and WIFF in prodution. It has many shape issues but I am just happy to have this kit. It was nice kit to build, and I can recommend it (be careful though as its big - takes up one whole self in my display cabinet). The WIP thread is here. The only AM used was the ACES seat and wonderful decals from Caracel Models. Everything else was botched. Anyway here are the pis - hope you Like it. Thanks Simon

  31. Howdy everyone, Seeing as I`ve painted myself into a corner, yet again, I hope you don`t mind me posting some pic`s of probably the oldest build surviving in my collection, but one I stripped down and refurbished a while back. My attempt at the Revell/Monogram 1/48 Pro Modeller Helldiver, which I built but was never happy with and which languished in the loft insulation... until I felt inspired enough to have another go.( and was too tight to buy a new one ) So; Dusted it off and evicted the spiders, off came all the delicate bits, repainted bits I wasn`t happy with, painted around the off-register decals..... re-feathered the camouflage edges and tidied up the weathering...... and slapped it back together and gave it a few coats of matt varnish. Hope you enjoy looking at, Cheers Russ

  32. Here's my latest completion! I've been restraining myself from buying the new Airfix Blenheim, because since I built it in the box scheme a few years back I have had the MPM kit sat on the shelf causing me dissatisfaction. I was chuffed with the model itself but made some poor colour choices for the DE/DG scheme, didn't weather to my satisfaction and didn't like the Munich crisis-era markings (which silvered annoyingly). So when I saw that Xtradecal had released a sheet for the new kit, the kit went straight into the paint-stripper without passing go! The option I went for was the colourful early scheme for 90 squadron, based at Bicester in 1938. This has local appeal for me as Bicester is slowly being rejuvenated only a few miles up the road from Oxford where I live this year. This joins my 2-seat Jaguar from living in Norwich last year, and my OUAS AZ Tiger Moth in celebrating my local airfields and units! One note of warning for anyone using this sheet (XK72202): the upperwing A1-type roundels supplied are too small, corresponding to 56-inch. Lots of photos show that the aircraft had large roundels that only just fit between the aileron hinge and leading edge. I estimated them as being 62-inch, and replaced directly from stock Xtradecal sheets. I'm not sure whether this mis-sizing applies only to the early scheme with A1, or whether the B-type roundels for later schemes are also out. The model is brush-painted as usual over Humbrol primer, colours are Revell (Night), Xtracrylix (Dark Green), and Humbrol (Dark Earth). I added a few extra scratchbuilt details I didn't first time around: the landing light aperture was cut out and glazed using a modified piece from a Hasegawa Beaufighter, and the extra little glazing panels in the turret were added using my spares box. I also rigged aerial wires, replaced the inaccurate PE rudder pedals, and drilled out the well for the retractable tailwheel featured on early Blenheim Is. Hope you enjoy this rejuvenation of a now-obsolete kit!

  34. Well guys that is the final 3 birds of the commission completed, this brings the total to 9 Aircraft, 10 including the Drone. Been quite along few months, I think I started the project back on the 12th March, there was a gap in the middle for a few weeks so I would say around 4 months solid work. Big thanks to those who have helped along the way as there were a few obstacles here and there that needed to be clarified but with help I got there in the end. If you guys are not sick of Blackbirds I will do a follow up on all the airframes, a nice group shot, if you want. The last three, SR-71C, YF-12C and SR-71 Big Tail YF-12C. SR-71C SR-71 Big Tail. More to follow. Thanks for looking. Danny

  36. Experiments today, I'll share the results Humbrol model cote seems to have passed the comparability test as far as being sprayed straight over enamel and a decal. The decal was applied using microset. My model cotes had not been used for a few months so had separated. To help in the mixing I had left a bottle of satin cote in the airing cupboard over night then after a lot of effort by with a trumpeter paint mixer/ and ultrasonic cleaner there was still a lot of gunge sat at the bottom of the bottle, So the bottle was gradually heated up in stages to prevent it cracking by changing proportions of a mix of water from the tap and kettle upto eventually very hot (just boiled) straight from the kettle. So first test strip went on and I was very surprised at the result, matt, turns out the unlabelled bottle I used was actually matt cote. Looks like the 4 bottle that I ve have that I thought was gloss, matt, satin, and an unlabelled satin, is actually 2 matts a gloss and a satin. Now I know. All was not lost at least I now know matt cote is compatible. I then got the labelled bottle of satin and started the process again. Sprayed the satin as the next strip and that seems compatible too. Next tests will be over a layer of humbrol clear, which ive never airbrushed before so that will be an experiment in its self, then see how the satin cote goes over that. Found it a bit difficult to get a photo of the test card to show the surface finish this is bout the best I could do. nearest is the matt next strip is the satin. Tests 1&2, Humbrol matt & satin cote directly over HU69 HU33 and Xtracolor X15. > Test = pass I think! Edit- For anyone trying to remix model cote after several months of settlement, one thing that did help is to add some ball barings to the bottle. I have some 3mm ones and these + the heating and lots of shaking over a long time will get it back to a usable condition.

  38. Thanks folks, hope I can keep the momentum going. I haven't done too much today, but I sealed up the nose, which required some fiddling to get the rod I'm using in the join to sit nicely between the two plates. Then I fitted the lower bulkheads and laid out the lower hull. I discovered I'd just cut the central join between them off-centre. Or maybe I laid them out back to back? I forget. Anyway, one was wider than the other in the engine section. I trimmed a bit off and fitted them into place. It fits reasonably well but I think the lower stern seam (the short one) might be skew? It could be an optical illusion though, I guess I'll find out tomorrow. You can see in the pic below - I think one side of the cut-and-replaced strip is straight, and the other is skew? I've been reinforcing the angled joints from the inside with 3mm tube. This only gives small contact surfaces, but does guarantee that they'll be tangent to the plates so the joins end up being pretty strong. And it's easier than trying to sand wedges of the kind of length that would be needed! Filler next Will

  39. I just pre shaded twice: 1. Actually I forgot on which model. I used black for the preshading but the top coat covered so well I cannot tell which model it was :banghead: 2. A model of a NMF air racer Mustang. But preshading means here not those panel line thing but that I painted all panels in different grey colours and then sprayed Alclad Chome over this. This resulted in what does look like polished aluminum to me. But I really want to try it again on my Tempest build the coming weeks. Rene

  40. No, the black is paint. It is applied to the lens during production. There is no sealant in that position.

  41. I realise that this might be a fairly radical approach, but how about waiting for the offending item to appear, before casting doubts on its usability? It's a little early to go on about a "dimple" (which is unlikely to be the dimensions of Fingal's Cave, or Wookey Hole) before it's available for inspection. As for the sale of goods act, in order to qualify, the item must be "not fit for purpose." If you can build a model Typhoon out of the parts, that's all that's required, and the internet is awash with modellers saying that Hornby have offered (and supplied) replacements for any defective parts. It does seem slightly strange that large canopies, with a prominent seam down the middle, needing a considerable amount of work to eradicate, have been with us for years, and excite no demands for replacement (or even an improvement in quality,) yet let one item, with a problem, appear from Airfix/Hornby, and all Hell lets loose.

I find this all quite extraordinary (and a little hard to believe). Nigel Now back to our main presenter of fairly dodgy old Airfix kits...
    2 points
  45. Ummmm, just a little observation here. Andyrowe lists a considerable number of Airfix kits with clear parts/canopy problems. Others have mentioned the clear parts/canopy issue is not restricted to this kit. I didn't grow up on Airfix kits like most of the people here. In fact, I didn't really purchase my first Airfix kit until about 5 years ago. (Revell, Monogram, LIndberg, AMT, that's what I grew up with.) So I really don't have a history with them. The ones I have purchased, for the most part are okay. Okay fit, okay detail, okay shape, okay decals, just okay. I really don't have an expectation I will be blown away by the contents of an Airfix kit. My expectations are it will be okay. Here is where I am heading. When I buy a Mach II kit, I expect it will fit poorly, lots of bad words, lots of sanding, lots of filling. But, I expect it. It seems as if Airfix has had problems getting clear parts/canopy done and there have always been issues as to thickness, clarity, fit and distortion. If this is a trend and known ongoing issue with this company and has been for years/decades, why is everyone so surprised when this kit also has an issue? Just because it costs a lot? Look at Trumpeter. When you buy one of their kits, you expect ease of construction. Now, accuracy, that is another matter. With every new release from Trumpeter, the main issue is how accurate is it? Sometimes good, sometimes okay, sometimes, are they looking at the same aircraft I am? I drive a large SUV. For the last 20 years I have always owned an SUV. I expect it to be able to carry a large amount of crap that I always seem to be packing in the back. When I buy a new one, I hope the gas mileage is decent. But, when it isn't and is just what is to be expected with an SUV, I don't go into a tizzy about how lousy the MPG is. So, as one who is fairly fresh to Airfix kits, my experience has been their clear parts/canopy is their weak link. Sometimes I get an aftermarket replacement, sometimes no. But, I have never opened one of their kits with the expectation to be wowed by how thin, clear and great their clear parts are. I just hope a coat of Future will make them useable. I expect to get a replacement canopy from Airfix that will not have a crack. If it has less distortion, it will be a bonus. Heck, I've been in different aircraft, including military, where the canopies and windows were distorted and not clear. Overall, I still stand by my opinion this is a pretty good kit and well worth its cost. And, I'm enjoying building it.

  47. Thanks Col,, (still got some nooks and crannies, not to mention crevices to delve into on the old girl). It should be a great show as usual, especially if you can fire all three up... look forward to catching up with you and the chaps again...) No problem at all young Pvt Moore, damn fine stuff and a must for all bipe types !....ah the divine beauty that is the Blackburn Blackburn, takes me back to my yoof, (courted a few BB's in my time !), the Madagascan Aye-Aye of the aviation world.. Well the smaller set (008'') of Archer rivets arrived this morning and before you know it...they're almost all gone !...well actually 5 hours later and with the onset of severe eye strain I've managed to get one airbrake, both actuator arms and the undercarriage doors done. It took so long because as I anticipated the compound curve of the airbrake petals means that the rivet strips needed to be cut into small sections and then 'persuaded around the bend (know how it feels !), but I think it was worth the effort. I've was also able to finish the nose gear door and its rivetting so that's another thing out of the way, but I'm going to need another set of rivets to do the other half and airbrake inners !!...well no one said it would be easy or cheap ! Right I'm off for a cold bath, Cheers all,....tally, bally ho.... Melchie.... The starboard airbrake petal finished...only one more to do now !!! The pieces all together for a group shot... One of the main gear doors, sorry it's slightly blurred...the old pork pies were beginning to give out ... Both ready for final coat ......(there aren't any rivets missing on the lower one, it's just the light hitting them at an angle).. 48. That's kinda cool sah Well worth the hard work in protecting the details Speaking of which I has a few (45) to confide Wonder how to post them all now then, New thread? Update to Walkaround? Stick em on the Catalina thread wot has proper died out now? Anyway, a query or two answered Steve Undercart defintely painted and it looks to me to be High Speed Silver, but the bracing bars, (actuating levers?) painted LAG Wing leading edges painted LAG rubber with a yard brush. I reckon the colour is LAG but the crap surface has picked up dirt by the bucket load AS you can see from this pictures, other unbelieving eyes have seen the rubber LE paint and decided to see if the undercolour is LAG too. The results of these exploring fingernail tests is easy to see VOILA Er yes mate it's grey underneath it The panel closures are left unpainted and the dirty look is very obvious here Notice anything odd about the rear fuselage red painted bit? Kinda just a tad darker in a defined pattern? I presume this is a hint to a previous life as an aero/display queen, I might look her up at a later date It looks like the brake mechanisms are LAG on a silver leg . Oil leaks seem prevalent around the front blade aerial, there's a sand filled drip tray below it with mucky patches With my crappy knees I couldn't go crawling any more than that to look UP to find stained paint Modern finishes probably don't show where the muck was if you wipe them do they. my car wipes clean right gradely if mucky . . I think this is enough interruption to ||Steve's magical narrative I have a couple of pics of the JP3 and several of the Sultan's piston Prov, no rubber LE but a humungeous tie down bolted under the wings, bloody windy out in that desert no doubt Three gratuitous Piston P pictures then I'll sod off if it works don't change it . The colour change is only where the Dk Sea Grey Meets the Dk Green, no rubber. Sorry about the largeness of the picture files... b

  49. Wasn't it something along the lines of 'variable noise - constant thrust' for the viper? When I was young and had a role in making the noise I used to think it was the sound of freedom. Now I'm inclined to Ex-FAAWAFU's interpretation of it as a 'Din'. Last time I was walking up in Scotland there were Typhoons meandering about at 5000' plus - and I just wanted them to pi** off. Got a busy week with work but I was keen to get the black on the nose as it looked kind of odd in it's absence. Tamiya Nato black with a bit of white mixed in to lighten it a tad further. This where all my chambers's post it notes go - artistic eh? I tell you I was a bit nervous when it came to unmasking: Pretty good. Like Cheshiretaurus I've got a little bit of cleaning up to do - maybe a tweek here or there. I'll probably protect the black with a light coat of Klear once I'm happy with it. Could have gone badly wrong but didn't tho...... Looks a bit more lik a JP now; albeit a bit too shiny and toy like at the mo. Also a bit nervous about what I'll find when I take the nose light masking off........ Steve
