  1. Hello everyone, I am new to the forum and this is my first post. http://www.flickr.com/photos/50794715@N03/11820301843/ Here are my first three proper builds, all 1/48. They are, from left to right: Seafire Mk.XV SR572/112 of 1832 NAS (RNVR)1949; HMS Hornbill /RNAS Culham. This was the Revell kit in BPF markings. I folded one of the wings, scratch building the wing fold sections, and added rockets and drop tank from the Airfix XVII and drilled out the exhaust stacks. I also dropped the flaps and used some spares from the Airfix kit. The decals were from Freightdog, except the stencils. I couldn't find any reference pictures for this aircraft so it's a flight of fancy, combining some stencils from the Kit and some from the Airfix XVII. Lightly weathered with a pastel wash and exhaust staining with ground pastels. I also added a whip aerial. I found this a difficult kit to build and used a lot of filler, for the first time. Seafire FR.47 VP480/180 of 800 NAS on HMS Triumph 1950 (Korean Stripes). The Airfix 1/48 kit, Built out of box apart from seat belts from wine bottle foil, drilled out exhaust stacks and a whip aerial. Weathered with a pastel wash, with ground pastel exhaust stains and some light paint chipping around the cannon access panels. Decals from Freightdog were used to fill the gaps in the kit set. A really enjoyable kit but the wing folds are very fiddly. Seafire Mk XVII Sp343/126 of (RNVR) NAS 1832 early1950's HMS Hornbill /RNAS Culham. Built out of box apart from tamiya tape seat belts, and a whip aerial. Again a light pastel panel wash. Whip aerial is wonky but will be corrected later. A really simple kit to build http://www.flickr.com/photos/50794715@N03/11820434404/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/50794715@N03/11820851996/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/50794715@N03/11820452573/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/50794715@N03/11820289253/ I hope the pictures appear ok, as I'm working from an iPad Comments welcomed. Don't hold back and thanks for looking Justin H

  3. I like the hemp colours but I wanted to see what it would look like in grey.... not so sure what to do now.. It's a shame the MR4 never made it into kit form as I think it looks a lot more meaningful with the larger engines

  4. Just got this finished following a slight disaster involving enamel varnish... Spitfire XIV NH915 Flt Lt D Rake May 1945 1/72 Fujimi Spitfire XIV NH915 by Ben Standen, on Flickr IMG_6359_zpsd0b7b1ef by Ben Standen, on Flickr IMG_6358_zpsb870be11 by Ben Standen, on Flickr IMG_6357_zps7d536d16 by Ben Standen, on Flickr Quite an easy build IMO. I added the cockpit from Airfix's F22, scratched some cockpit detailing and seat belts and used Falcons vac form canopy. Comments and criticism welcome Ben.

  5. Dear Fellow Modellers I credit the Airfix Lancaster BII to tempting me back to the 'Divine scale' and enjoyed doing her up with the excellent Airfix ground vehicles. I did scratch improvements for the turret interior framing and Quickboost barrels. The Decals for 115 Squadron are from Xtradecal. The figures are from Revell I decided the yellow gas patch circle behind the pilot's head was too small so used a large yellow decal and a punch and die set to make a larger one. Hope you like it? 6. Here are some images of my RAAF Target Tug. It is made from the ICM kit with Red Roo Models conversion, Fundekals stencils and Xtradecal national makings. After I took these images I realised I hadn't done the lights and then painted them in. 7. Hi All! It's time for my blue moon post: my latest build. This is LN660, a Wellington X as flown by my Great Uncle Jim Lyon (Royal Australian Air Force) on the night that he died, 15th March 1944. An instructor pilot with 11 OTU, having already flown a tour of duty on Lancasters with 9 Sqn (EE136 Spirit of Russia), he suffered a collision with a Shorts Stirling while on the landing approach to RAF Westcott. Losing height, his plane was seen to make evasive manoeuvres to avoid crashing into the village of Quainton and the railway station there. They came down in a field nearby. No survivors from either aircraft although the Stirling flew on for another 20 miles before crashing. The area where my great uncle's crash occurred is now a commercial park/industrial complex and there is much interest there of the local history. There is already a plaque for both crews lost on that night and a remembrance ceremony is due to happen this March, the 70th anniversary of the crash. A new granite memorial will be unveiled along with (weather and maintenance permitting) a flypast from the BBMF Lancaster. RAF and RAAF dignitaries, that kind of thing. Apparently there is a wee indoor museum/memorial in one of the main buildings and this model has been built to be exhibited there. It's been a project on the go since July but mainly built during the xmas quietude. I'm afraid taking pictures aren't my forte so please excuse the low quality of the pics. I mean to take some better photos before it goes to it's eventual home. I hope you like it. It was a pleasure to build, although a pretty basic kit. I fear i may have overdone it a bit with the weathering of the props though. And the aerial is a bit wrong too, but i'm prepared to live with it. Thanks for looking! Le Muppet

  10. Exactly, there is no point not making the area safe. I am pretty sure families, in particualr military families would accept this. How would they feel if say a spark set of one of those flares and someone else got hurt or killed? There are Police, Fire, USAF and RAF personel on site and I am pretty sure they know what they are doing and dont need to be second guessed on it, and being from those organisations they will want to get the men out in a timley and dignified way. 11. Man flu - the curse of the nation! I find a good sniff of polystyrene cement clears the nasal passages a treat, and once you've stopped coughing you'll feel much better - at least better than when you were coughing and sneezing!

  12. Kit - Tamiya Paint - Alclad lacquers, Tamiya acrylics Decals - Aeromaster 48-083 Extras - Eduard setbelts, 75 gallon droptank from Tamiya P-51, 1000lb bombs from Academy P-38 Republic P-47D-20 Thnderbolt Assigned to Col. Gil Wymond 65th FS, 57th FG Italy 1944 Well, I have mentioned here previously that I usually build/finish a project at glacier-like speed and here's the proof, started last winter (here in NZ), and finished as we approach the middle of our summer. Hun Hunter came back to the bench because I scr*w*d-up a Trumpeter Seahawk by losing the (already painted) IP. !! As ever I'm happy to take all questions, comments and criticism. Thanks for taking the time to look. Ian

  15. This is my first completion of the year, the Hobbyboss 1/72 AW Seahawk FGA6. I really enjoyed this build, it had enough challenges to be interesting without being a drain on my Mojo. I added a Pavla resin seat, exhausts from Quickboost and some wire for the aeriels and pitot. Painted using Mr Hobby acrylics, I think the EDSG is too dark but couldn't be bothered to strip it back. Decals are from Xtradecal.

  16. Evening all, Having recently finished a 1/72 Airfix Mustang in post war RCAF colours.. http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/234952128-airfix-172-mustang-new-tool/ I couldn't help thinking how nice it would look in 1/32nd, which is a bit daft because I've got a load of kits to make and I'm halfway through a 1/72nd Airfix Hurricane build, but despite promising myself I wouldn't - another being must have overcome me, because I still seem to have ordered the lovely, but pricey, Tamiya kit anyway.. In addition I also got the beautiful HGW seatbelt set (with resin dinghy pack), the Barracuda resin sidewalls, the Eduard interior photo etch and the Leading Edge RCAF decal set Whilst waiting for the kit to arrive I made a start on the HGW set which had already arrived... Thanks for looking, Guy

  17. Well here's my first completion for the year! The Hasegawa P-40's are tricky and I must say I'm really glad to have it off the bench haha. Here's a quick rundown of the build - CMK/Eduard cockpit - Ultracast seat - Ultracast wheels - Ultracast exhaust - Department Of Corrections seamless intake - Montex masks for insignia/codes - Barracudacals for the rest of the markings WIP here: http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/234948576-148-hasegawa-p-40k-64th-fs/ Anyways, on to the pics! Thanks for looking!

  18. This the first of 2014, it is the fabulous Revell/Monogram F-86 with Hi Line decals for a Greek machine in the early 1960s. It still needs a pair of pylons and sidewinder launch rails, I have a pair in one of my spares boxes but I haven't located them yet It is a cracking kit shame they are getting hard to find. Thanks for looking

  20. I built this a few years ago OOB apart from a little bit of jiggery pokery with the decals. It was a straightforward build, the only problems being caused by myself. Trying to sort out the horizontal seams on the cockpit I managed to over sand it and ended up with a plane that was sucking its cheeks in. I build it back out with milliput and it ended up ok.It represents XJ524 that operated as a tug with Flight Refuelling Ltd at Hurn in the 80s. Hope you like, best wishes Liam ps, yes the tank is wonky. I didn't notice at the time of photo, it doesn't look like that normally.

  21. The fin and rudder are also too small - use this as an excuse to buy the new rag-wing Hurricane I and use the larger rudder on the IIc.

  22. I've managed to do some work on the wings....I've rescribed the new ailerons and filled the old ones.... And the wings added.... I'll get some primer on her later and then post some better in progress photo's.....

  23. Explosives like the propellants in small arm ammunition that are nomally safe to handle can become very sensitive to shock when exposed to fire/ heat or contamination by fuels and oils. They can't help the deceased crew members now, but they have a duty of care to make the area safe as possible for the rescue and investigation teams to do there job. This accident has cost four lives already, nobody wants any more lives lost, or any preventable injuries. Selwyn

  24. This has to be fake as anyone whio's ever seen any movie on UFOs knows all aliens pick America as their destination. Fortunately zombies, giant spiders, giant apes and all manner of other disasters also start in America. So elsewhere we're safe.

  26. Well that settles it then. I'll built a P-38 unlimited racer very close to that one; twin Griffons, CR props, tear drop canopy, larger fins and slightly swept wings...

  27. Agreed!! The SU-9 & SU-11 ALMOST make up for it thought. They also forgot the Yak 25/Yak 28 series as well . The TU-22 has to be one of the best looking aircraft EVER - despite its problems. Here's one I made earlier. The old ESCI kit is still worth a go- especially as it's the only game in town! Allan

  29. Another productive night in the B&B! Managed to turn this pile of paper... Into this, the end of the third stage of construction: The building of a solid structure from just a sheet of paper has been jolly satisfying! Next stage is bow and stern thrusters and then the skin. Things I've learnt so far include that Rokit Card Glue is phenomenal, my circle cutter from Amazon can't arrive soon enough and I'm going to need more scalpel blades! Cheers, Pete

  30. Thanks Nigel The grass clumps are a bit of cheating You can get them for railway dioramas - Noch do them in various colours to represent the seasons - Look for Noch Grass Tufts, they do Autumn, Summer and Spring. The autumn ones tend to have a more parched look which is good for desert areas, but I add a couple of spring ones in which are a bit greener. The main trick is placing them in a pattern that looks convincing and using various rock and ballast scatters to make the surface look appropriately stoney. It does help that I studied a bit of Geology at Uni back in my youth

  31. Oh believe me I'll be here for the duration, baring the internet falling over or this computer going pop or general armagedon of course, although the speed with which you are working through this one I doubt we'll have to loiter long before this one is ready for an RFI thread and we can all tell you how wonderful it looks.

  32. This is my annual Egg-plane fix - my way of getting through the hectic days of family, over-eating and drinking too much. I managed 5 this year and the kids have bought me my 4 for next year already To me they are a great change of pace and fun builds First the SR-71 Next...the MiG-15 Next...the Hughes 500D Next...the Space Shuttle Columbia And lastly...the P-51 (and I've just realised I've missed the prop decals off - will add these later!) Thanks for looking and a Happy New Year! My three London icons will be next up somewhere else on the Site

  33. Any advice on storing thinned enamel paint? If I make a batch for spraying I invariably end up making more than I need for one session. Does thinned enamel paint keep well? Talking maybe a few weeks or months here. I've been looking around for suitable storage containers and this supplier seems to have something that might be suitable. http://www.ampulla.co.uk/Shop-For-Glass/Glass-Ointment-Jars/c-1-169-192/ The aluminium cap ones look ideal - 15ml and 30ml sizes. 34. I could see a mans head through the round window. How are you going to model that then? Plus, it seems there will be a a fair amount of Dalek DNA in the completed build. I hope this one has better manners! Looking good though. Might be finished by Christmas. Pete

  36. I read somewhere that David Hannants recommended to thin Xtracrylix with their own thinner at a ratio of 2 parts thinner to 1 part paint. Add a few drops of windscreen washer fluid and spray at 20psi. Has worked well enough for me. Thinning with Vallejo airbrush cleaner works good too. For a freehand Luftwaffe mottle camo I don't think anything will beat Gunze thinned with ammoniabased Windex though.

  37. I think Rick has hit the nail on the head with all his answers.............Many advise about "About the same consistency as skimmed milk" and I too have no idea what consistency of skimmed milk is ........what I do is start with little paint, say 25% and 75% thinners and work back from that..................clogging is caused by drying paint - check out the parts in the airbrush, you will find a perfect covering of paint on various working parts of the airbrush, scrape off, or clean then either add more thinners or flow improver and try again..........trial and error...............the end results are worth it

  39. I've been using Xtrcrylix with mixed results but hardly ever negative. As Mike says above, using Acrylic Flow improver does help and done in several light coats overa primer of your choice(Halfords in my case). Generally I've been quite happy with it except for a pot of white bought at Telford recently which is all very jelly like. Not bothered to return it yet.

  41. G'day people, I had plodded along with the undercarriage. The nose gear is ready for paint, The main gear units need some more piping and cables added but I have made a start I rewarded myself by painting the tyres and the canopy actuators The HUD was also installed. For a bit of bling, I cut up some Xmas decorations that have a prismatic green/blue effect to make the HUD combiner glass plates. cheers, Pappy

  44. Happy New Year everyone and hope you had a good Christmas. Now the festive seasons over, I thought I`d show you my latest effort, Eduards (Mauve) 1/48 scale P-40, done as a `M` version from the `N` boxing Completed to represent an aircraft of the 25th FS/51st FG, `The Assam Dragons`, whilst based in China Summer 1944 I had been looking for a P-40M kit for a while, when I remembered from a long gone previous build that the Eduard P-40N kit contained the parts to do an M. I didn`t use much of the resin bits as I used them before and didn`t think they were worth the battle to fit them. But I did manage to use a bit of the etched stuff. Decals were from a SkyModels sheet I replaced the gun barrels with brass tube and the bomb came from the stash. Hope you enjoy looking at Cheers Russ
