  4. Hi all, here is my latest finished kit, the Eduard 1/48 Profipack Yak-3. It's a very simple kit even with the included photo-etched parts. I've added some extra scratched parts here and there. For paintjob I used AKAN acrylics. This plane flown by Lieutenant Colonel A. D. Yakimenko. I hope you enjoy my photos below. in progress pictures: thanks for watching!

  6. ****Note: You know when you're not quite happy with a decision you made? Well I'd convinced myself that soft camo lines looked better, but it kept niggling at me....so I redid them, and taken new shots. I think it looks better ****** . This kit needs no introductions! Barracuda resin cockpit door, turned metal cannons but only because an accident ruined the kit ones, and Techmod decals. Painted with Tamiya Acrylics and weathered with pretty much everything. I hope you like it.

  7. Thanks! Regarding Draken: I will build a late RF-35 and an early, or mid-, F-35, both in 1/48. Last year I finished a late, glossy, TF-35 (AT-160) in 1/48 using a canopy from Maestro: More pictures at: http://bjornsmodeller.blogspot.se/search/label/TF-35%20Saab%2035%20Draken

  8. My first post here, so be gentle! This is the Monogram HU-16B heavily modified to represent a Norwegian /ASW variant. I used the RVHP nose conversion, and Aires engines. All other modifications are scratch built. I vacuformed new transparencies and engine cowlings, and the undercarriage was scratchbuilt. There was a lot of other small things done as well.. Too many to list.. Decals are a cut-and-paste job using mainly Vingtors excellent sheets. The model represents aircraft KK-A as it was in 1968 when my father flew it from Andoya air station. Hope you enjoy it. Espen

  9. Hi all, this kit was absolutely marvellous to build. No complaints what so ever. Its the revel reboxing of monograms kit, in fact, the stand that came with it has monogram on it. I understand that revel and Monogram are now one. I hope you like her.

  10. Wessex HAS1 815 Naval Air Squadron, HMS Ark Royal, 1962 Frog / Novo 1/72 kit This one was in the attic for more years than I can remember. What I can remember is buying the Frog kit when I was at school in the mid 60s and rushing home to built it. That one’s long gone now, and this build is based on the Novo version. This was almost an OOB type of build despite the age of the moulds – I decided not to re-scribe for once and to do a very limited interior re-furb. I added a bit of detail to the main and tail rotor hubs but that was about it really. Finish is Extracolour RAF Blue Grey and Humbrol Gloss Yellow over a Halfords white primer base, with a top coat of Humbrol satin varnish. Decals were based on a couple of old Modeldecal sheets, but roundels and ‘Royal Navy’ were replaced with more recent decals as the originals had yellowed just a bit too much to use.

  13. Dalek Diary - Day 47 Before I do any Dalek building tonight I have to update you with important events of the day. I won the cookery competition. For my troubles I was awarded this top quality, tasteful trophy: I will cherish this handsome object and give it a daily buff up. To be fair the competition was not that stiff. This week there were only three competitors (normally there are five or so). One chap made a beef stew which was actually very nice but the other guy arrived with a big pile of banana sandwiches and a bowl of Monster Munches. I don't think he was taking it seriously but he did actually get some votes. At least I have secured my place in the finals next month. I just have to think of some recipe ideas.

  15. OK - thanks - count me in, though I am not sure about the subject yet. I have several choices: 1. Insane Whif in it self: An A-6 - a winged and piloted V-2/A4 based on the 1:48 Pegasus V-2 kit. 2. Not so insane: A Mossie Bendix racer (there were some) based on a dismantled and incomplete Tamiya kit (it was fully build with broken props and U/C and heavily yellowed clearcoat - but I already stripped it to bare plastic - so it is in the condition of an unbuild kit with missing parts. It is not really started I mean and I hope this is OK. Missing parts will be replaced with Verlinden Sea Mosquito conversion. Canopy will be replaced by a blown one, offset to the left, similar as Canberra B I(8). 3. A Me 609 based on one Czech Models Me 309 (some headaches here as I only have one fuselage, prop. Will have to recast them. None as breathtaking as the Todesstern Greif but I think the Mossi would look pretty cool: Cheers, Rene

  19. Ok - I am calling this done, I have used as much of the reference as I can find and used what has very kindly been provided in this thread. Next stop is wheel bays and painting. You are right Andy about Aires and Eduard - hopefully it will be just as I finish the model. I also need to write to Airfix as I now have a short nose javelin courtesy of one of the dogs taking a fancy to the nose cone. Very strange as this has never happened before.

  21. Howdy howdy howdy, Had a slight pause on the modelling front. I've since secured a man cave and the modelling has re-commenced. As for the gazelle. The skids have been fitted; fingers kept crossed during the process as I was never certain if I had fitted enough weight to the front. The moment of truth and hurray!!! She's not a tail sitter. I've also started on the engine and gearbox. Initially a daunting thought. Below is the work completed so far: everything scratch built, no inbetweeny photos I'm afraid. The above has been primed, ready for a first coat of paint. Once the paint has been completed I can continue adding further bits and bobs. And here's a side on view of the gazelle. And here she is next to a pot of paint Thanks for looking folks and any comments, critiques and tips are welcome. Cheers Aaron

  22. Hi. Today I finally manage to find some time for some building. Work, family and life seems to get in the way most evenings. I've glued the wings together. Some seams to take care of later. Two more gondolas. Stabilator. Main landing gear with classic Russian green wheels. Hopefully I'll find more time during the weekend so I might have something looking like this by next week. To be continued..... /Bosse

  25. As soon as I saw this model I bought it as I love the Typhoon and Tempest and having just finished the Hobby Boss Tropical Spit I thought this would be a great next project. Well it has been a steep learning curve this one! I haven't done a limited edition model before and haven't experienced resin! In fact the resin wheel bay nearly ended in disaster and I was all for throwing in the towel but I stuck with it. I need to learn how to cut resin as I hadn't realised how brittle it was. So this is where I have got so far and I decided to post my work in progress as I am a bit stuck with the exhaust staining - I am not happy with this but I am trying to avoid doing a respray because of all the work I have done so far. So any advice on this (or any thing else) would be welcome. I used Tamiya Smoke and apart from the glossy appearance the edges are too defined - really frustrating this as I quite like the work I have done so far! I have used the Tamiya RAF colours which I lightened with white and yellow to give the more worn appearance. The invasion stripes were done using Alcad black and white primers and the black then oversprayed with tyre black to break it up a bit. I used Tamiya weathering powders on the spinner and sprayed blacked over aluminium on the props to give the chipped effect. Loads more to do on this one and I am hoping for a reasonable result at the end! Chris

  28. I started this a while ago with the intention to post a build thread but never got around to it but either way its finished now so here it is My ducati gp4 with full decals the paint colour is tamiya ts 85 which it says is for the 2009 f1 ferrari but i found that the colour recommened (ts 49 bright red) was to light plus this paint has a metalic look to it in sunlight the tyres i am really happy with as they have a very used look to them i put a bit black over the ducati writing on the stand and wiped off the exess with a damp cloth and again im quite pleased with it and now my entire moto gp collection the yamaha was done a few years ago, since then ive picked up a lot thanks for looking and any comments welcome

  30. Hello Guys May be I can recall everyone that Airfix this year produced (or will produce 2013 is not over yet ) at least 10 1/72 kits , (sorry for the quarter scale .. ) so If they follow that pace in 2014 I think we'll have plenty of interesting kits  to buy next year ... And anyway I already have enough kits in my stash to keep me plastic modelling busy for another life and I bet that you are just like me ..

  32. Humbrol colours evolved as generic paints as much as anything. Back in the day Hu27 would probably have been used for all sorts of greys, for all sorts of armies and airforces. The name probably only helped differentiate it, form other Greys. These would have been Glossy or Matt. Humbrol introduced, some 30 (maybe longer!) odd years ago an 'Authentics' range. This included allof the then 'new' RAF/RN colours (I remember their EDSG was a very dark green!!!Maybe that should be "Authentic's"!! )This range has has evolved and has been included into the main range but given specific RAF/Luftwaffe etc names. These are Semi-Matt/Satin So Hu27 is 'Generic', whereas Hu163 (or whatever) is 'Specific'. The fact that they may be similar is coincidental.... Generally speaking and with the exception of Hu30 (RAF Green? I don't think so!) I think Humbrol paint call outs are generally accurate.

  34. Many did. Those already transferred to training units probably didn't. There is a story than one such aircraft had one metal and one fabric wing - seems like a bit of a bar story to me but there's nothng physical to stop it happening. By mid-May the arrival of a fabric-winged aircraft in France was seen as a sign that the bottom of the barrel was being scraped for replacements. (See 12 Days In May, by Brian Cull.) That didn't mean that those already in the squadrons were necessarily withdrawn before the normal process of replacement.

  36. G'day people, I have started the camouflage paint process. I have only painted the outboard section of the right (folded) wing at this stage, and this was an opportunity to experiment with colours. Applying the D-Day recognition stripes was time consuming and frustrating. Although I could measure the widths very accurately using a digital vernier, applying the masking tape in straight and parallel lines over a curved surface is not easy. I don't think I got it 100% correct, but it looks okay. I don't think the maintenance personnel would have spent a huge amount of time on getting the the stripes perfect on the real thing either. The underside was straightforward, a blast of Tamiya Sky followed by a burnt umber wash A slightly darker variation for the wheel well and wing fold area The upper wing was painted in a custom mix. the Extra Dark Sea Grey (EDSG) was some Gunze EDSG out of the jar. The Extra Dark Slate Grey was a mix of Tamiya German grey, yellow and white. I tried to keep track of ratios but in the end I just added drops until I got what I wanted. I was comparing the mixed colour to a colour sample from a tin of Humbrol Slate Grey. I don't see the need to be exact as there were variations in hue from paint supplier in real life, and once the effects of weather, age and sun are combined, the colour will change anyway. Some people get hung up about colour, that is fine, too, they can build their model and get it the way they want, and I will do the same. I have started to distress the paint using oils I am not a believer in pre-shading (heresy!) and most people cannot pull it off properly, sorry, but real aircraft paint schemes do not look like tartan blankets however skillfully the effect is applied! I do think post shading can be eefctive and I will be experimenting with this next. Finally a question, The outboard wing sections have what looks like a fairing of some sort It looks like a light fairing but there are already nav lights at the wing tips. Is this light of some sort (position light for example) or is it just a fairing that is painted over normally, cheers, Pappy

  38. Here is the final part of today's Dalek update. I had a bit if a clean up using this toy brush thoughtfully supplied by my landlord: Here are all the trefoil bars installed: Jorgen was right, they do look much sharper than the moulded kit originals and at least these line up. I then did a fit check with the dome: As you can see the plastic by the eye socket is still moving around. I wonder if the solvents in the paint have reactivated it? The last job of the day was tidy up the bars with some filler (white Milliput): I have filled all of these except for the one at 12 O'clock. I now have to go off and make some more picnic dishes. Bye for now, Nigel

  40. A quick update to show I've not forgotten about this one. The right hand bay is almost complete now and the left side is half way through getting wired up, If truth be told I find this task quite daunting until I sit down to do it then enjoy it as soon as I start. Hopefully be moving on to get the cockpit started soon.

  42. Just saw a B-29 flying around downtown Fort Worth, Texas. Not a common sight. I would imagine it is the CAF B-29 "FIFI" in town for an airshow starting next week. Normally there is just F-18s, C-130s and F-16s flying from the naval air station. I like that, a naval air station situated in the middle of Texas.

  45. Hi folks, Thanks for the kind words and all the information / ideas for adding weight. The liquid lead does sound really good, but I've ordered some tungsten heavy metal putty from an online angling shop. If this doesn't do the job then I may stick the skids down to a base. Update on the gazelle. The main rotor lacks detail and the point where the blades attach to the rotor head doesn't look right. I've stuck some chopped up plasticard to the kit rotor with the intention to sand it down an file a gap inbetween the plasticard and kit plastic (if that makes sense?!) Was going to post a pic of the main rotor but wasn't sure about copyright rules on the forum. However, here's a couple of pics of what I've done to the rotor... The above has since been sanded and I'll eventually cut / file a slit down the seam and insert the rotor blades in this. As for the interior: The roof panel is completed. The airbrake / throttle were from a spare eduard super puma etched set (chopped down to size). The little dangly thing with the orange bit at the end (you can probably guess I'm not helicopter savvy - but at a guess I'd say its a locking pin for the throttle or air brake that's removed prior to flight?) - anyway, I made this from a bit of copper wire and a small square cut from aluminium tape. It should be dayglo orange, but I don't have any paint for that. Maybe in the future I'll dab a bit of dayglo on it. The cables are made from copper wire wrapped around a pin (to create a spring) then pulled apart and rolled between my fingers to create a narrower spring. If I left as was, after wrapping around a pin, they would look far too big. Personally, I think I could do better with the cables but my eyes hurt and didn't want to go through all that again. Don't get me wrong, I'm still happy with this result. I've also added a strip of plasticard to the inside of the front canopy. The compass(?) was made from a discarded bit of milliput sausage that I cut and sanded into a sort of ball shape. The other bits where from the same eduard super puma etched set used above. Below are a collection of dry fit photos of the gazelle. Outstanding on the interior are the rear harnesses and sticking the seats to the floor. Thinking about this, not sure if I should leave the seats until the fuselage halves are stuck together? Will see... Thanks for stopping by. Tips, comments and critique all welcome. Regards Aaron

  46. Hello there! Quick update on what's occuring at the moment. I've put the base together, this is the base that comes with the kit, and i've put a brass tube in the middle as near to the right size of the connector i could find, although the connector did need a little thinning to fit nicely. the brass tube was glued into the correct position nice and square, then it was fixed with some body filler after a good roughing up of the tube and surrounding plastic. The toggle switches are for on/ off and warp/ standby modes. It sits on the stand nicely, the connector is slightly tipped in the tube because the connection in the hull doesn't sit level due to the shape. It has 2 tiny screws in which ruin the look of it a little bit but i didn't trust glue alone! The saucer and engines are just a dry fit! Couldn't do that with the ERTL one, could you?! The saucer is now fully glued together and has the lower dome fitted, unlike in this picture. I'll get the secondary hull done and then will move on to that in this wip. I got the tail piece on, which was a bit of a nightmare fit- wise, partly due to my sandwiching an led between the shuttlebay floor and the bottom of the hull to illuminate the 'Enterprise' on the back, coupled with the fact i'd already painted the shuttlebay floor. there was a huge gap which needed filling and filling and a bit more filling! Imperfections in the filler surface were filled in with generous paint application from the airbrush! then the yellow lines extended out to the edge by masking and painting, blending into the original decal, then plenty of Klear over the lot to achiev the original finish of the shuttlebay floor. It looks ok, but I forgot pics of this and it's under masking now. Shows the illumination where the ENTERPRISE decal will be. I was a bit disappointed with the red lights above the shuttlebay door, there was an led for that but the light doesn't seem to have found it's way through very well. There is very little room above the shuttlebay roof. I've been masking up the secondary hull for some paint! I made a card disc for the deflector so I didn't have to have liquid mask on it for ages. I also made a card mask for the ring around the deflector as it was too complicated to mask up as it's painted now anyway. Good old compass cutter did those jobs nicely. Foam was wedged into the openings and then maskol was (made from copydex and ink, as i ran out!) used to fill up gaps. The light spots were masked up as I need the light to get through there so paint will be kept to the minimum. The black paint was airbrushed over any glowing parts where light was leaking in joint areas etc. It's grey! It's had a coat of Halfords' finest, and I've been finding a curing any gaps, imperfections or scratches. The roots of the warp nacelle pylons have been a real problem area, requiring lots of filling and shaping due to big gaps and different levels at the joint, but it's looking ok now. Had about 3 sprays, fills and resprays in various areas now, and it's looking like time for some proper colours! Thanks for looking. Andy
