  1. I thought it best to introduce a new thread, but here's the last thread on the subject http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=234922498&hl=spaghetti Paul Lucas has uncovered the following statement in the Operational Record Book of the Repair and Maintenance Branch, HQ RAF ME, Cairo. "7.10.40 Appropriate units given procedure for camouflaging frontal portions of Hurricane aircraft (with V.84 followed by a light and irregular application of very pale blue and green)., in order to effect confusion and miscalculation of range by enemy gunners." Punctuation as original. V.84 is Aluminium, in pre-war nomenclature. Further, he mentions that from 20 August 1940 the undersurfaces of all Bomber aircraft (other than Bomber Transport) and Fighter aircraft were to be camouflaged "pale blue". The very pale Sky Blue from the UK was thought inferior to a local mix called Middle East Blue, because the latter was darker. By mid-September 1940 Flying Boats and Army Co-operation aircraft (Lysanders, Hardys, Hartebeests) were also to have Middle East Blue undersides. Perhaps this deserves a separate thread of its own. I'll leave this posting just with the statements, and add comments on implications later.

  2. Ive had this one since Telford. Its a beautiful model. It does have some innacuracies , but they dont worry me. This will be the first Luftwaffe fighter that i have ever finished. The camo was great fun , as i said its a first attempt but i love it. It just needs the glazing , tyres painting and the ariels adding and its done.I really want to get this finished before the end of the year.

  4. I built this straight out of the box just to have a "Quick Project". I crammed as much lead shot into the nose as I could, but it still sat on its tail! So, I filled the front end of the bob bay too! I don't know if the undercarriage will take the weight. I used Xtra Color enamels for the top side and Humbrol Aluminium for the underside. If I knocked the flaps off once, I knocked them off a dozen times! Thanks for looking.

  5. Just finished this. Aeroclub 48th scale Hawker Demon and Pheon Decals. Pretty much out of the box. Lewis gun replaced with spare from a Roden kit. Oil cooler is scratchbuilt from plasticard because I lost the kit part. Panel lines and control surface breaks were scribed over to make them a bit deeper.

  9. A fine looking pair you have there Alpha. It is a pity about the lack of stowage. The owner of Value Gear has offered to cast modern British Jerry Cans, ammo boxes etc in 1/48 if someone will do the masters. My skills would not be up to it, but if anyone is up to the challange....

  23. Looks fabulous I really like the slightly worn look, it looks very realist. I had the same weight problem with my B(I)12, I filled the nose, front of the bombay, front of the nacelles and front of the tip tanks and the so and so still was a tail sitter. I final got it right on my T4, the Alley Cat resin helped as did having more space to weigh down the nose (still filled the bombay, tank and nacelle fronts though). I now use it as part of my daily work out.

  26. Thanks Woody, I am just as amazed I went this far Thanks alot Sernak, it will only fly if I run around the room with it in my hands!! and if the wife catches me I will be in a rubber room Some of the jigs have taken time to build, but I think saved me alot of time because I did not have to layout and bend each part. Thanks very much for looking in on my ongoing WIP Thanks Paganbronze, it started a kit but found to many errors so, i just keep going and going to try and get it right. Thanks everyone for all your kind words. It has been a few weeks since I have updated my WIP, a few weeks ago I emailed John at JNE Aircraft Restorations and asked him if he had any drawings of the spars, and if so could I buy them, I sent a couple of pictures showing him what I am making, well he emailed me back with a drawing of the front spar plus a few others, and this was just what I was looking for, had all the dimension on it, it also said you dont have to send any money and he will send more once he finds time to look. He told me he has over 4000 drawings of the Hurricane. What a very nice gentleman and I find his web site fantastic. I have also asked if I could visit him and take a good look over his Hurricane because he lives just south of here in Washington USA and he said anytime, so in the near future I will. So from the drawing I have now, had to rework some parts, getting closer to finishing the front and back spars, all I need to do is put rivets everywhere, then drill the holes for the coolant piping, then it will be time to start making the tubes to joint he two spars together. I have just put put the main frame work on top just to give you a look on how it will be. Thats it for now. Regards Richard

  28. AIM-9Xs and AIM-120 were sourced from the 1/48 Revell F/A-18E Super Hornet. I managed to track down some rare photo-etch from Model Technologies. I incorrectly assumed that the Model Technologies PE I purchased seperately for the Monogram Hornet would be identical to the PE included in their Hi-Tech boxing of the kit. Although some parts are very similar, they definitely NOT identical! The kit clear part representing the HUD... ...was replaced with photo-etch and a piece of clear acetate. The actual HUD has 2 glass panes. After struggling with attaching the first piece, I decided to consider myself lucky and forego attaching the second pane. PE mirrors and grab handles were attached to the canopy. My goal is to finish this project before the end of this month. We'll see...

  29. Badly shamed by avalanche of modelling coming from Dan, I've pulled my finger out today. No intermediate pictures I'm afraid, but here's the result of a few hours work over the weekend. I've decided that the floats would have got battered on these things, both in the water and during maintenance, largely cos there's nowhere else to stand. So cue chipping frenzy. There are few pictures of these aircraft survivng anyway to argue about, and well it was fun, so what the Hell. I've already gone over the top with weathering the catapult so why stop now? More shading to do on the paint yet, but that's where I am up to. Nick

  31. Hi all! Well,I've been modelling for more than 20 yrs and this was the first time I had done so much paperwork..The situation almost reached to a nerve-wracking point as you'll see.. Well, the point was to make some 4-5 tall and slim coconut palms for my 'Pete resting on the beach' project.. To tell the truth, after looking at many photos of palm trees in scale I just wanted to give more attention to this beautiful tree than just cut along fabric plant leaves.Having seen a very large number of Pacific palms on the internet I picked this one as a reference.. Ι collected some pine tree twigs, I cut off the excess and I baked them in the oven despite some protesting by my wife..lol!.. Back to the bench for painting.. Having done this I added thread to show the rings on the trunk.. Now for the fronds..Show a little understanding please!!lol!! Seventy leaves were done that way..(5 palms x 14 fronds).. I am done!!! HOORAY!!! Well, the more I looked at the result the more I hated it! So I added some more green to the fronds.. The fronds were too long and the trunks too..So.. ...At that time I decided to work on each palm tree separately.. I added some leaves one by one like they do in hair extensions lol!! As my blood pressure was getting higher I cut along some more A4 paper to a better shape this time.. Now I was getting somewhere.. The 1st palm was done..The others to follow later on..Now time to calm down and relax a little!!! Cheers, Panos.

  32. Hi, I took a break from the Christmas stress today, and concentrated on my F-35. Today I started the final assembly. Landing gear, internal weapons and all the doors and cover in the underside is in place. I've got the doors on the top, externat weaponsload, canopy, exhaust and some few small bits left to do. But I think this one will be done before Christmas. To be continued..... /Bosse

  34. HS Trident 1c Kit: Airfix Decals: Two Six Decals On 10 June 1965, while operating Flight BE343 from Le Bourget to Heathrow, this aircraft made the first fully automated landing of a commercial airliner carrying paying passengers. The model depicts the aircraft as it appeared in May 1968 with a natural metal rear fuselage.

  35. Haven't completely fallen off the twig just yet I'm pleased to say, just had an exceptionally busy few weeks at work. Anyway, back in harness now and work is progressing. The interior is being fitted out at the moment and photos will appear as soon as I can take them in something approaching daylight! John

  36. Hi guys, I have done some things today. I have put the cockpit inside the fuselage and put the underside with the wing spars to it. Here are some pictures. Here is a picture of the wing spar that I modified a bit, otherwise it wouldn't fit (because of the MDC pit). And the last picture with everything closed up. Cheers,

  39. Matt, If 96 Sqn flew nightfighters (and according to my "Beaufighter Squadrons in Focus" book, they did) then I'd have thought the camo should have been Medium Sea Grey overall, with a disruptive pattern of Dark Green on the top surfaces. I'm sure there were exceptions, but most nightfighters used that scheme later in the war rather than the day fighter scheme. I'm therefore surprised if Tamiya are calling out Ocean Grey - particularly for the undersides! Does anyone know better? regards, Martin

  45. Well... I've said it previously on ARC, then on Z5. Now I'm to repeat it once again here on Britmodeller: Trumpy's kit is acceptable untill you compare it with Eduard's MF. It's my personal opinion that F-13 is a POS in comparison with MF (or SMT) in terms on detail accuracy. But it didn't prevent Eduard to make them correctly You are absolutely right here. It is definitely looks like F-13. But the problem is that I'm a remediless rivet counter and MiG-21 is one of my beloved plane for a quarter of century

  49. Another short update to reflecting the minor work performed during this weekend. I couldn't figure out what color the walkways were on the jet. Pictures I found seem to show that the walkways were lighter than FS36320. All the walkway decals I have are sized for the Hasegawa kit or are darker than the upper color. I masked and painted the walkways with a lighter shade of gray. Here's an overall shot with tails held in place with well-hidden tape.
