    De Havilland Mosquito FB Mk.VI This particular version is modeled on one that took part in Operation Jericho, RNZAF, No 487 Squadron Finally - that took a while! My first aircraft kit (although I started and finished a Spitfire for a mate in between) and it is a cracker - I know it is expensive, but cannot fault this Tamiya kit. Although I used some Eduard detail kits (engines, guns etc) you certainly do not need these to make the kit amazing. I'm learning the weathering thing, and I know this is a little 'dirty' - but I thoroughly enjoyed it and learning what I did, having been inspired by the masterpieces elsewhere on this forum... ...sorry, I find it hard to edit the number of photos I want to do some more pics with a bit of photoshop play, backgrounds etc.... And finally - I posted the montage below on FB.... ...within minutes a friend sent me this. She made my day and it makes me smile each time I see it.... Build 'WIP' can be found here:

    Here are the photos of my latest, the 1/72 Airfix He-111 modelled in a Battle of Britain scheme. The kit goes together pretty well and the only things to watch out for are the fit of the wheel bays in the intakes and the fuselage windows. It's got the Eduard interior extras which look lovely but unless you look closely they're pretty hard to see. I also riveted the whole aircraft (which I think was worth the effort) and re-built the wing Pitot from a blunted safety pin and bit of sprue. The paints are airbrushed Tamiya and Mr Color acrylics (I think the Mr Color RLM acrylics look great here) and I've used a combination of Xtradecal BoB and box transfers. The slightly weathered effect came mostly from preshading but I also added some streaks and stains with white, black and brown artists oils. Finally, the white-pink bars on the wing and tail are based on the photo at the end where it appears that the Luftwaffe were about as a good at masking carefully as I am!     Here's my 1/72 Italeri/Wingman C-130J-30 Stretched Hercules operated by the RCAF. It started out as a Testors/Italeri AC-130a 'Spooky' with a lot of scratchbuilding and modifications. I'm very happy with how it turned out, hope you like ... Thanks for looking, Colin

    Welcome to the RFI for my very first helicopter. The Kamov 27 Helix by Hobby Boss. It’s a lovely kit with very little to correct. I used : Tamiya paints. (Acrylic) flory washes vallejo Paint (Acrylic) Tamiya weathering powder. ammo filters and EZ-line I scratch built the seat harnesses and some of the interior wiring. without further ado here she is. here’s an internal shot from the WIP. one last pic.     Hello modellers. My last model is done. Modest model and some hard work in the fittings parts. An old traditional Hasegawa 1/72 model. I used Eduard photo etch interior and masks. Tamiya acrilic mixes. I choose JE+HK 2/KG.6 version, found in Melsbroek, Belgium1944. I hope you enjoy it. Cheers!

    This is my attempt at the old Airfix kit of the Scottish Aviation Bulldog, flying in RAF training colours of the mid 70s. With Mrs C frowning on additional shelf space being made available, kits of the size of the little Bulldog become more attractive - wonder what she will make of my plans to do an RAF Neptune???!!! bulldoga bulldogd The kit is pretty basic but still quite crisply moulded. Mine was an older boxing with a Swedish Air Force trainer on the front. The critical advice is to get enough noseweight into this thing. I stuffed the nose with stell shot but there is very little space to cram much in and it was still determined to tail sit. In the end I hollowed out the back of the spinner and stuffed some Tungsten putty in there which just brought the CoG forward enough. bulldoge bulldogc The nose gear is very spindly and was snapped off early in the build and then vanished into thin air. In the end I fabricated a rather crude replacement from bits of white metal and thin metal tubing but it is just about passable. Decals came from an old Modeldecal set and represent an aircraft from the London University Air Squadron. Paint was Humbrol 208 for the red with Gunze white and Xtracrylic Light Aircraft Grey. I wondered about the instructions to paint the front tips of the blades red/white/red as most Bulldogs appear to have black/white striped blades - however Modeldecal were indeed correct that at the time this aircraft was portrayed (1976) it did have the red/white/red tips.     Just as Airfix announce the new Buccaneer kit, I finish the old kit in 16 Sqn colours, based at RAF Laarbruch. Bit of a dog of a kit, took lots of filling and finally just gave up when it started to look like a Buccaneer.

    As usual from me this is one of my builds from a Group Build, this time the Specialist’s GB. I’ll start off by saying this is a model to build only if you REALLY have to have a 1/48thViggen in your collection. It looks fantastic in the box but it’s a down hill disappointment as you build her, she’s not a straightforward build and in a lot of areas a real disappointment. Enough on that. Heaps of AM stuff was thrown at this build and as I found 90% of it is actually for the Airfix/Esci model even if they mention this and the Special Hobby model. There are noticeable differences between these model so parts don’t quite fit. The scheme…well it prematurely aged me by 20 years I reckon! I used masks and found out the hard way they’re really designed for the said Airfix/Esci Models! That aside the thing that saved this paint job was the paint I used. People that have followed some of my build know how much I rave on about this Acrylic Lacquer paint from Mr Paint. It goes on so thin and nicely and just gives an amazing finish, just what you need for difficult and complex paint jobs.     Hi all I have been working on this little gem of a kit. This is a lovely kit to put together and looks the part. Slightly simplified without some scoops etc on the top of the fuselage but very pleased with it. Built OOB apart from a small whip aerial on the lower port forward fuselage and the headlights were drilled out with a round burr and painted and filled with lazer bond glue. Brush painted with Humbrol enamels. Great Value for money Kit from Airfix Hope you like Thanks for looking All the best Chris

    Morning folk's,built as a pair for the Trainer's GB is Airfix's T11 in the Swedish Air Forces historic flight colour's,as this machine is kept pristine I've only ran a pin wash to bring out a bit of detail and no weathering.A great stress free build and nice to be back into 1/72 scale for this and a few other subject's to come,many thank's for looking in. #

    Dear fellow Britmodellers, this is my 1/72 Tamiya Mosquito FB Mk.VI, built with Master metal gun barrels, CMK weapon bay and Eagle Cal decals. Markings represent an aircraft of 418. Squadron in October 1944. Painted with Gunze/Mr.Hobby acrylics. All photographs by Wolfgang Rabel. CMK weapon bay wasn't a good fit at all, being too short for the cut-out of the lower fuselage.     This is my fourth completion of 2019, the venerable but still respectable (at least in the absence of much in the way of competition) Matchbox Heinkel He115B floatplane, wearing the markings from the later Revell reissue of the kit for an aircraft of the first staffel of Küstenfliegergruppe 506 based in Norway as part of Luftflotte 5 in 1941: I got the model quite cheaply off the well-known auction site and built it quickly (or as quickly as I could at least) partly as a trip down memory lane (which seems to have been redeveloped in the meantime as a cul-de-sac full of 4-bed Executive Homes) and partly just to try out the Luftwaffe Maritime colour scheme. It was built OOB with a couple of exceptions; the seated crew figures were replaced with Airfix pilots due to the loss of a leg on one of the original candidates, and the pitot tube was replaced with Albion Alloys micro-tubing so it looked less like the pitot salami provided in the kit. The R/T antenna wire was Infini White Rigging Thread, the 70 Denier size, anchored with a couple of tiny eyelets from Bob's Buckles which were intended for rigging 1/48 scale aircraft but have practical application in a less perverted scale as well I used the Eduard canopy mask set which is still available though the kit itself is, I believe, not currently in Revell's range. The paints used were Colourcoats ACLW12 RLM02 for the interior, ACLW03 RLM65 Hellblau for the underside and the uppersurface camouflage was ACLW04 RLM72 Grun and RLM05 RLM73 Grun. The Propellers and spinners were ACLW02 Schwarzgrun which is subtly different from the RLM73 but too subtly different for my camera to pick up, however I do want you to know that I made the effort The transfers were from the Revell re-issue of the kit which I had acquired at some distant point in the past, a remarkable act of foresight by Past Me. Generally they worked very well but the fuselage codes silvered quite badly, particularly on the port side, and no amount of Micro Sol completely eradicated this. So it goes.     Hi everyone Here is my second completion this year, it's the ICM He 111. A very nice kit with no real fit issues requiring only a little filler here and there. I used the provided kit decals which although quite thick performed well with a little help from some Mico-set and a scalpel. It was only after I had applied the decals that I realized I had made a stupid mistake by getting the unit crest/emblem the wrong way round so they now face backwards rather than forwards. If any one has a couple spare decals they don't want please let me know, I'm more than happy to pay for them. I used a Eduard photo etch set for the interior along with there mask set, which is a must with all the glazing on the thing! Also used were some replacement Master MG-15 gun barrels. Paints were from MRP, oil wash and pastel chalks used for the weathering. Thanks for looking, gazza l

    Hi all, Thought I`d share some pic`s of my latest effort, which I finished a couple of weeks ago but, got my sausage fingers caught on the aerial wire and had a bit of repair work to do. My attempt at Fine Molds 1/48 C5M2 `Babs` Kit Finished to represent an aircraft of the 3rd Air Group, IJN and operated from Denpasar Air Base, on Bali Island Really well detailed and great fitting kit, the only bit I had a battle with was fitting the engine and cowling to the front fuselage, but I think......... ....that I squeezed the exhaust parts too close together when fitting the cowling ( there`s a lot of parts involving the engine and cowling in a quite small space ) The interior looks amazing when done and fits beautifully but then mostly disappears when you paint the top fuselage and fit the canopy Built almost entirely from the kits contents with just the usual dodgy seat belts and bits of wire for the ignition harness Hope you enjoy, thanks for looking Cheers Russ

    My latest effort, a Meng 1/48 P-51 built as Mustang IVA KH774, 112 Squadron in early 1945. First off I will be the first to admit it is not my finest work! I wanted a quick, easy build after a couple of tough ones and off court problems and distractions. I built an Airfix Tomahawk a while back and this was a later war companion for it in my collection. The kit was generally excellent - good fit in the main and nice details. I filled the wing rivets, added a few wires in the cockpit and replaced the gunsight and IP decals. The only problem I had during construction was due to the push fit nature of the kit - when you test fit, particularly smaller parts such as U/C parts, it is a devil of a job to get them apart again! As is typical with my modelling, I made a few assumptions - and errors! The only reliable picture of this aircraft which I could find showed a light coloured spinner - possibly sky? I assumed that this was a replacement/temporary and I used the theatre red spinner colour. I also left off an antenna wire since I could find no evidence one way or another whether they were used in Italy. I used decals donated from an Italeri kit and this is where it all started to go wrong. I blindly followed the Italeri instructions for the camouflage pattern only to find - far too late - that this is probably wrong for the so called "Firewall" scheme which it was trying to depict. The colours are, I think, correct but the pattern is not. Ho hum! Also, the shark mouth markings were way too long when compared to the picture so they were modified and touched up as best I could to make them look a little better. The final problem was noticed only when I was taking pictures - I don't know how but I hadn't noticed the small light just behind the arial mast - not sure if they were even carried on wartime machines but on my version, it was painted over (Ho hum again!).     Hi Comrades! Here is my recently finished Heinkel-111. It's old but good Monogram kit (Revell boxing) with Eduard brass, mix of Kagero and Peddinghaus decals, national insignia painted with Montex masks. The main issue of the Monogram kit is inappropriate gondola configuration with blind forward end. I ignored it, sorry. After completing the model, I ordered ICM kit of H-20 and found a great additional clear part for the gondola - so sad for me... Unneeded Lofte gunsight window was faired over, some other modifications made to the undercarriage. I was unable to find the photo of the prototype, but always wanted this one - now I have it!     Hi All, This is a fairly recent completion - FREMS' 1/48 MB.339. I believe this is the only kit FREMS ever issued. It's very well done, with great details, lots of marking choices, and even turned brass gun barrels. I've completed it as A-115 as flown by Teniente de Navio Owen Crippa. On the morning of 21st May 1982 Argentinian troops around San Carlos Water reported they we watching British ships coming in to the Sound. It was decided to launch an armed recon mission and two MB.339s were briefed to take off from Port Stanley airfield. The aircraft of Crippa's wingman went unservicable so he took off alone. Along his route Crippa encountered HMS Argonaut and gainst heavy AA fire pressed home an attack with rockets and 30mm guns., damaging the ship and wounding several crew. Crippa had remain at low level to evade small arms, AA and SAM fire, but managing to take in enough detail to provide a detailed report, used as the basis for the ensuing FAA attacks. Teniente Crippa was awarded the Medalla al Heroico Valor en Combate. I've replaced the seats, added the Eduard cockpit details, and some of their PE to the exterior. Thanks for looking in, Gareth

    Hiya Folks, Continuing with my recent theme of SEAC based RAF Liberator`s, it was high time that I did a B.VI bomber variant,...... but there are so many out there which have such great artwork applied to them yet so little room at home to display them in model form,...... so,..... I decided to represent two aircraft with the same model as the subject aircraft had Donald Duck artwork on opposing sides of the nose!! The left side of the aircraft represents KH284 `Donald III' in its later guise as K of 356 Sqn, having previously been D of 99 Sqn, hence the black fin with the 99 Sqn white spot covered over; Here it is with 99 Sqn; And- Here with 356 Sqn, seen after the war prior to being scrapped, hence the number `82' sprayed onto the nose and bomb bay door; Now,.... the crossed fin markings of 356 Sqn are usually depicted as being white,..... but in some photos they do look a bit duller and in this painting from the time, they are the same light blue colour as the inside of the roundels,... So,..... here is my rendition of KH284 on the left side of the model,...... I`ll probably paint over the fin crosses with light blue at a later date; And,..... for the other side,..... KH320, D of 357 Sqn with another Donald Duck on the nose!! And the right side of the model,...as KH320; So there we have it,......... one model,........ two aircraft!!! The model was finished with Tamiya Olive Drab on top with Aeromaster Neutral Grey underneath, the markings were from the Eduard re issue of the old Academy kit and also from DK Decals. Cheers Tony

    Dear modellers, I like to show you, how I built most of my models in scratch, in scale 1/48. After building so many model kits, I wanted something different. I always wanted some Fokker models in my collection, pity for me, there are only a few kits. So I figured out a way, to build models in scratch. Of course it took some time, and much trial and error, but at last it worked right out for me. The materials I most use are 0,5mm – 2.0 mm plastic sheet, sometimes wood for the wings and to form difficult pieces with double curves. DVD boxes for clear parts and finally self-adhesive aluminium tape. At last I managed to print my the decals on my PC. Well, as the saying is, a few pictures tell more then many words, I hope you enjoy the photographs and maybe they offer some inspiration : And here the finished model: Happy Easter to everybody !     Hello everyone here is my Burst B Revell color (if we can say :)) 1/4 Gascogne. Model quite simple to mount without trap, except to chew some fittings nothing very nasty .. But for a bit full all I installed LEDs for position lights including a flashing on the back and the reactors .. Decals Syhart, pod reco Arsenal ..     Here's my just finished 1/48 Hasegawa A-4N finished as N432FS, used by BAE Systems Flight Systems on a target towing contract for the Luftwaffe. Build thread is here. The kit is the A-4KU boxing, the extended tailpipe is from Quickboost, and I also used a Quickboost seat and an Eduard zoom set in the cockpit. Decals are from Two Bobs. Nobody seems to produce the RM30 target towing equipment so I scratch built mine. I found some of the manufacturer's promotional material online, which helpfully included a scale drawing, although I had to estimate the dimensions of the target. The body of the RM30 started life as a drop tank from an Eduard 1/48 MiG-21, and the front end is part of a JT3D engine from a Minicraft 1/144 DC-8. The target started out as one of the missiles in the Eduard MiG-21 and the side pylon was one of the MiG-21's pylons. Never tried scratch building like this before, really enjoyed it - I'll be doing it again. thanks for looking Julian

    This one proved a lot more difficult than I thought it would, but I reckon the end result is worth it. It's an old 1/72 Matchbox HS125 converted to become the Blue Vixen (Sea Harrier FA2) radar/weapons integration trials aircraft, using putty and elbow grease! The nose was cloned from an Airfix FA2, using silicon and Milliput, to give me:  New nose  Block unused cabin windows  Stbd Cockpit modifications (but only those that can be seen!)  Doppler altimeter fairing under fuselage  Wing Pylon  Various underwing strakes and flap operating fairings  Open up and fill landing lights  Open up and fill Nav Lights  Add new antennae FredT

    Hello Dears ! Just a few teasing words, I finished her yesterday but SWMBO was working on the PC Then this Morning, I had to go to work, but I can't wait to share a bit with you !! There's been a load of work on the beast !! And as usual, I'm not glad about my painting I know that the real things are generally not finished as neatly as a Michaelangelo masterpiece but …. So, we are back in Korea, back in late '50 Aaaand Back aboard HMS Triumph (Once again ?? ) Paints are a mix of Mr Color and Xtracrylics, stripes are Lifecolors though! Ojk Gents, back at the PC around 15hr for the follow up !! Must earn some pounds or Euro whatever !! See you soon ! CC

    Hi all, After having had a bit of a hiatus, this is my second posting within a few weeks so I can get on with it when I put my mind to it This time round, I chose a kit I've had in my stash for a while - the Italeri Hs 129. This is actually the first Italeri kit I've built and apart from the odd bits here and there that took more effort, the kit went together well and I think it has really good levels of detail for 1/72. I bought this kit because the Hs 129 has always intrigued me - purely because of it's shape - as it has an almost triangular fuselage which is very unusual. There was also a good choice of schemes to complete the kit in - a couple of Eastern front schemes, a Romanian version and then the one I chose which was Hs 129 B-2 - 4 (Pz.)/SG, Castel Benito, Libya 1942. I was drawn to the mottling for this scheme used to blend the aircraft into it's surroundings in the desert environments. I've never done any amount of mottling before so decided to bite the bullet and give it a go - hopefully I've done it justice So here goes - my Libyan tank buster - hope you like it and as always you're feedback and comments are greatly appreciated.     Huey captured in the Falkland Conflict by the British from the Argentinian. It was an Argentinian Red Cross Helicopter. Very bad condition paintwork. Not copied the depth of condition . However photos darn it, make it look cleaner than the effects that I applied. Bit of artistic licence. British emulsion over painted, in the Falklands, the Argentinian Livery. I have half painted out the tail & behind the big doors to give the illusion of the change of hands. Kitty Hawk first for me & a very fine kit. http://

    Finished at last, just in time for the Milton Keynes Modelkraft show at the weekend, so will take it there for display on the club stand. Been wanting to have a completed model of this aircraft for a long time, pleased that I have now eventually finished it. In Progress build link is below, highlighting the modifications, paintwork, scratchbuilding, home-made decals, my own resin engines etc etc: Of course, the model was carefully assembled with a "Whole Lotta Love" .... (sorry, I know, I just had to say it ...... ).

    My first 1/72 aircraft for 2019. It has been almost a year since my last successful 1/72 airplane build, and I was doubting I would be able to pull it off - especially after a thinner incident the occurred during touch up. Nevertheless, here it is. I'm happy with it, and I feel confident to return to my favorite aircraft scale. The model is straight from the box - including the harnesses, which are the Tamiya decals carefully cut out, painted black in back and then given a generous coat of the Ur-flatcoat, Testor's Dullcoat. Paints are Tamiya thinned with Mr. Leveling Thinner lacquer. I used artist's oil washes to create several filter coats, for weathering. I'm really pleased with the effect, and will continue to develop it in future builds. I'm really happy and excited about this model :)

    Hi, My latest model is the very nice kit from Airfix which is quite enjoyable to build. There are some panel lines that need to be filled in and a few things to be fixed here and there, but nothing major. This is a the aircraft of David Lee "Tex" HILL of the AVG for which the decals were sourced from a vintage Aeromaster sheet. Exhaust pipes are from QB. Pitot, gunsight and barrels from Master. Now that it is done, I must confess that I find the wheels ugly and that they would benefit from being replaced. All comments are appreciated. Thanks for looking Antoine

    During the mid-afternoon of 30 April 1943, P-40Fs of the 316th FS from the 324th FG, along with the three P-40 squadrons of the 79th FG and a top cover of Spitfires from 92 Sqn, were flying an anti-shipping patrol off of Cap Bon when they were attacked by Macchi fighters, likely MC.202s from151 Gruppo and MC.205s from 1 Stormo. Although both sides made multiple claims, the only apparent loss was the MC. 205 flown by M. IIo Luigi Caroli of 88 Sq., 6 Gr., 1 Stormo. Caroli was listed as MIA, possibly shot down by Lts. Kim Bolack and Malcom McNall of the 79th fG, who shared in claiming a Macchi fighter, although they listed it as a 202. The tables were turned on 8 July 1943, when a MC.202 severely damaged the P-40F flown by Lt. "Bucky" Buchanan of the 316th FS. Buchanan was able to nurse his damaged Warhawk, coded Y*76, back to his base, where its rudder cable snapped upon landing. Buchanan was unhurt, but Y*76 never flew again. Here are my representations of the fighters involved, both in 48th scale, although I can't say for sure if the MC.205 I've modeled was specifically involved in the scrap on 30 April. P-40F: AMtech kit with resin nose, Cutting Edge cockpit with Ultracast seat (to replace the Cutting Edge one I accidentally damaged), Ultracast exhausts and tires, Eduard photoetch ring and bead gunsite, Sky Models decals, added brakelines and a mirror. I think that's it. MC.205: Hasegawa kit, including decals, Mike Grant's 'smoke ring' decals, Ultracast seat. Very nice kit OOB so not much needs to be added.     I present the RusAir resin IL-18 finished as CCCP-75717 an early “Salon” IL-18V. Built in 1961, the real aircraft was initially used for transporting VIPs, who apparently included Premier Nikita Krushchev and pioneering cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin, until that role was taken over by jets. In 1975 it suffered an undercarriage collapse and never flew again, probably being broken up for spares Although I tend to avoid resin kits I make an exception for RusAir. Their IL-18 is absolutely gorgeous and a joy to build. I really can’t speak too highly of the moulding quality and attention to detail which are streets ahead of any other 1/144 IL-18 kit on the market. In the normal style of Russian resins the fuselage is split vertically like a conventional injection moulded kit and not solid like Authentic Airliners or Welsh Models. Rus-Air thoughtfully provide holes to drill for locating pegs to assist with fitting the wings and tailplanes. They even give you slots for plastic tabs to help align the engines. Very little filler was required, in fact one wing root and the number 2 engine needed none at all. The only slightly fraught part of the build was assembling the separate propellor blades and hubs. These need really careful handling. The blades must be sawn off the casting block, trying to use a knife risks breakage as I found out the hard way. It’s also quite easy to get the blades back to front, another thing I found out the hard way. The original plan was to use Revaro decals. They were designed for the Eastern Express kit and preliminary checking with photocopies suggested there would be minor fit issues on the RusAir model but nothing unfixable. However when I actually came to use them the Revaro decals flatly refused to soak off the backing sheet and they really aren’t a product I could recommend. The upshot was that I had to use the kit decals - shock, horror! Slightly to my surprise these turned out to be pretty decent and I ended up wishing I hadn’t wasted money and effort sourcing the Revaro sheet. With the liberal use of Microscale Liquid Decal Film and plenty of strong (red label) DACO solvent around the nose the kit decals coped stoically with many indignities. The end result is by no means perfect but if you want an early Aeroflot IL-18 it’s the only way to go once Revaro is ruled out. White paint is Halfords and natural metal is AK Interactive. There is very little weathering on the model - it's reasonable to assume that an aircraft used for transporting the Premier would be kept clean! I enjoyed the Rus-Air IL-18 so much that I’ve bought another one which will probably end up in Malev livery. I’ve also pushed the boat out and bought their limited edition Tu-114 which I wanted to grab before it went off the market. That should be a challenging, fun build.     Not my usual subject so I may have made some mistakes along the way, but I couldn't resist building one of these . I think it just looks right.... Basic kit is of course the Revell one and the decals are the new ones from Two Six. I was hoping to add the real aircraft to my flight log on a couple of recent trips but no luck yet..     RMS Carpathia - 1/500 Scale - Scratchbuilt I present for your viewing pleasure my recently completed model of RMS Carpathia. She is depicted as she may have appeared on the night of the 15 April 1912, the night that she sped to the rescue of the beleaguered survivors of the Titanic disaster. The model is constructed from wood, brass, plastic-sheet and various other bits and pieces. It is completely scratchbuilt except for the lifeboats that are 3D printed. The WIP thread that tracks the process of the construction of the model and the sea-scape can be found here: I am quite pleased with the result - especially as the project took less than 4 months from start to finish. The model will be on display at next weekend's WASMEx scale model exhibition at Cannington community hall in Perth Western Australia.     Built over a number of years mostly due to frustration with the kit/builder interface, even did something else for about 10 months or so, but finally it's finished. Focke Wulf Fw 190V-18 Wkn.0040 CF+OY 1/72 scale MPM Kit No.72033. Built 05Oct2015 to 13Apr2019. The box, A bit of history, "The Fw 190V-18 was originally an Fw 190A-0 W.No.0040 CF+OY that was modified for high altitude work by Kurt Tank originally utilising a Daimler Benz DB603G engine, but due to development probs with the engine the aircraft stood in a separate hangar for weeks so Tank decided to install an interim installation of a DB603A-1 with the TK9AC Hirth turbocharger, designed to boost power output in the rarefied air at high altitude and fitted with a four blade propeller. It turned out that there were not going to be any problems installing the engine, the turbocharger was going to require a number constructional changes. It was fitted below the fuselage with the large air intake, reminiscent of the P-51 Mustang, almost touching the ground! The engineers used a turbine propelled by the engine exhaust fumes, which were transferred by two long ducting pipes' running along the fuselage sides. The turbine propelled a compressor and the compressed air was cooled and delivered to the engine compressor. When all that had been dealt with, the engineers and mechanics stood round their creation to have a look at it. One of them said carelessly "Look what we've created." "A 'kangaroo'" another one replied. The name was unofficially accepted, and from then on, both DB603-fitted machines were called 'Kangaroos' at Focke Wulf. An unfortunate name really as they were really only capable of short 'hops'. Foreseeing flight stability problems, the engineers gave the Fw 190V-18 a broader chord vertical stab and rudder. On 10Dec1942 the V-18 was sent to Daimler Benz at Echterdingen, where factory test pilots could not handle it at all. The aircraft would rather jump than fly. "After all, it's a Kangaroo," one pilot reportedly said. Therefore Kurt Tank instructed Focke Wulf's chief test pilot, Hptm Hans Sander, to personally test the V-18 in flight. On a cold January morning Hans Sander climbed into the cockpit and commenced take-off procedures. Getting airborne correctly he climbed and disappeared into the cloudy sky. Less than an hour later he returned to the field and on landing the aircraft rapidly dropped it's tail the tailwheel hitting the ground. The aircraft leapt just like it's namesake!! If it were not for Sander's experience he would've been killed, but he managed to wrestle the aircraft back to a three point landing as he would have with a normal Fw 190. Even so, the V-18's tail rose a few more times causing some rapid changes of taxi direction before coming to a stop. He switched of the engine, and sat motionless in the cockpit for a while taking deep breaths. When the designers ran up to the cockpit, he got out and discussed the flight with them; unstable in the climb, impossible to trim with a tendency to snake at altitude. He then proceeded to fly nine more take offs and thankfully for him as many landings before he informed Tank the aircraft was a complete failure and indeed dangerous for pilots at this stage. It had multiple stability and power problems, leading Sander to conclude that it was completely unsuitable for flying before extensive modifications were carried out. A special team of Focke Wulf technicians and Daimler Benz engineers were immediately set to work on the problems, just where to start? It was now called the Fw 190V-18/U1 and flew another 30 hours with various mods without any considerable improvement to it's performance or handling. When the V-18 achieved 680kph at 11000m the engineers were delighted but an irritated Sander stated "I could have achieved the same without that damn supercharger!" This was not the end of the 'kangaroo' saga as Fock Wulf built a further five prototypes based on the Fw 190A-1 incorporating the lessons learned by the V-18 during it's flights. Slowly this attempt to produce an FW 190C was abandoned." The finished build, More pics soon,

    Firstly, thanks to everyone that has emptied their pockets to donate to the server fund lately - it's all much appreciated and helps to keep the doors open. After many delays in getting going, we've now got the new server, and just need to shuffle all our old data across, which I'm discussing with Support at present. Once we've got everything covered off to our satisfaction, we'll begin the migration process, which will mean taking the forum offline so that no posts will get orphaned in the move, and so that everything copies across properly. It will also take a wee while to propagate the changes to the DNS record (the internet's address book), so we may be offline for between 6 and 24 hours at a rough guess. A lot of it depends on where in the DNS propagation cycle we are when the changes are made, as well as YOUR ISP's DNS schedule, so some people might be able to access the site quickly, while others won't initially. It's how internet things go and we have little control over that. Prepare a comfy cushion, a book, bottle of booze/coffee, dare I say a model? and some conversational gambits to try out on your family. Phrases like "So, what have you been up to lately?", "Why are you packing all your clothes?" and "Oh my goodness, who are those small people??" could be useful here. So if the site disappears suddenly, check out Facebook or Twitter and look out for our announcement. If there's no announcement, it's worth putting another 50p in the meter before you start fretting, especially if all the lights went out at the same time

    More classic Airfix from me - this is my effort at building the Skyvan as G-ASZJ which was the 4th Skyvan and the prototype "Skyliner" all seater variant. And, yes, it is very pink! van7 A few tweaks are needed to change the basic kit into the Skyliner. Most notably two new windows need to be cut out, one filled in, and a rear passenger door was scribed in place of the blanked window. There is also a blister of some kind under the fuselage which was formed from a chopped up Hunter drop tank. van4 With a fuselage that is basically a cuboid, you would think construction should be foolproof but in my efforts to tightly squeeze the components together with rubber bands my first attempt resulted in a distinctly rhombus shape when viewed from the front!!! Fortunately it came apart pretty easily!! van9 This beast is another enthusiastic tail sitter. The front is crammed to the brim with steel shot and yet it was still insufficient to keep it level. Fortunately the replacement 4 blade props and spinners are white metal from Aeroclub and just about tip the CoG forward enough. I needed to slim down the faces of the Garretts in order to match the (correctly) pointier white metal spinners. G-ASZJ can also be seen with three bladed props earlier and later in its career. van8 The pink scheme was used around 1971 and there are some nice pics of this aircraft at the Paris Air Show. There was an earlier version of the scheme with a lemon yellow colour rather than pink. Although you would think that pink is pink, it took a few goes to get the right match. I used Gunze H19 with a touch of red, with a generic light grey for the lower fuselage. The engines were painted with my diminishing stock of Citadel Mithril Silver. van11 Decals for the scheme came from Two-Six. There was a moment of head scratching caused by the scenario below but fortunately the decal being black could simply be flipped over. I can confirm that later prints of these decals do have the logo correctly handed!!! Untitled This aircraft had a long career - it was certainly flying as recently as 2013 as 9Q-CSD with Swala Aviation in Kenya. Hope you like! Pat van5 van1

    I started this around Christmas and completed a month or so ago, I really needed a mojo-restoration build that was simple. Decided to use the classic stand and do it wheels up The different shades of green on the stand were an accident but I liked it. I had to do a few minor repairs to broken parts as it had a hard life before arriving in my stash. Decals were ruined so had to buy some new ones. I like RAF desert colours so went with The Fiery Queen from Xtradecal X72107 sheet. Before: After:
