Hi again,

During the course of the excellent RAF Waddington International Air Show 2010, I managed to get up close and personal with Boeing E-3D ZH106 of 8 Sqn RAF. I hope that the pictures obtained may be of use to those tackling the Airfix Sentry and Flightpath detail set. I extend my thanks to the RAF Waddington MCO and crews of 8 Sqn who made the visit possible. Here goes...

Nice pictures Mark, can't remember which of the 7 dwarfs 106 was, used to be at Waddington. I take it bt your Canberraman name that you like the good old Canberra, your avator pic of 134 I see, I designed that disbandment scheme when I was at Marhiam, Ashley

Yes, ZH106 still does carry the name and plaque for 'Grumpy' just inside the crew door on the port side. For the record all the other E-3s still carry the seven dwarves names:


ZH101 - Doc
ZH102 - Dopey
ZH103 - Happy
ZH104 - Sleepy
ZH105 - Sneezy
ZH106 - Grumpy
ZH107 - Bashful

The retirement scheme on XH134 was one of the most tasteful to adorn any RAF aircraft in recent years IMHO, and it's good to speak with the fella who created it! My interest in the Cranberry is largely down to living 3 miles from the 27 end at Wyton, and it remains one of my all time favorites!

Hi Mark,

Thats it, worked on all 7 of them during my short time at Waddington and flew on 104 twice, once in the states in 05 and again in 09 when I left Waddington.

Thanks for your comments mate, I loved going down to the pan to photograph them especially early morning when the mist/fog was looming in the air and the sun was rising, was sad to see them go. Theres also 169, gate guard now at Marham painted up in the scheme but in overall grey. I also did "Shiny two" and the 40th Anniversary of Nimrod last year.

Cracking fotos Mark - do you have any more close up of what's just inside the entrance doors? I'd like to do mine with them open.

Thanks for the support but in answer to your question, sadly no! Nearly everything I took I have now posted except for a few pix of the operator stations which I can provide if necessary but doubt this will help. I seem to recall that technical drawings of the exterior and interior of an E-3D appered in an RAF yearbook, if I can track down a copy I'll send you a PM. According to some scale drawings my son has, when entering the rear crew door there are crew beds straight in front and to the left are 8 seats facing rearward. Inside the front door is an array of electrical and comms equipment in cabinets.

Sorry I haven't been more useful but I'll see what else I can find.

Mark - Never mind, as you'd obviuosly been up the steps and taken at least one foto inside I was just being wildly optimistic that you'd taken a shot or two looking inside the door. I'll have to get myself over to waddington one day and have a look for myself. The rest of your shots were most useful and have been filed away for future reference, cheers, Dave.

Well I have no reason not to start mine! I have the kit, Flightpath update set and some nice decals from TwoSix.
