well we are off for a few days caming in york next week (well 5 miles away) we are going to do the toristy thing and already have plans to visit, yorvik, the duengone, railway museum, YORKSHIRE AIR MUSEUM of course, but is there anything else we should see time permitting, also any good model shops that are easily accessable (thinking of using park and ride)
Madmonk
Mark,

You seem to have most things covered there, though of you get time I can recommend a walk round the city walls.

As for model shops there is Monk Bar models which is about 3 mins from the Minster. The stock is not extensive but there are a few bargins to be had, seem to have most manufactures covered.

Have a good time.

Warren

Turn right, from the model shop, and cross the bridge; about 50 yards up, on the right, you'll find a fairly unprepossessing bookshop, which gives the (false) impression that only Christians should enter. Go through to the back (leaving any bags behind the counter, as you go,) and you'll find a section full of (mostly new) books on transport subjects, many at discount prices; go through, even further, and there's a room full of second-hand books and magazines.

Quite a good sweetshop between the Minster and the model shop too. It sells ginger creams, which are my touchstone of a decent stock. Try 'em!

Nice city to just explore

Fabulous city, just enjoy it.

However if you fancy a trip to a model shop, other than Monk Bar Models, which is literally under Monk Bar, go to Walmgate, you'll pass the book shop Edgar describes and then walk on to P & S Models, a bit of an Aladdins cave.

There is also a military museum opposite Castle Museum and Cliffords Tower, just next to one of the chain hotels. Looks a bit underwhelming but is great.

If you're interested in "history" (you know what I mean) then York castle museum, and Clifford's Tower are worth a visit. Castle museum has Dick Turpin's cell and street scenes of the past, and also has a wtaermill where you can buy the flour! Other than that, I'll just reiterate that a walk on the walls is worthwhile. If you don't mind paying, the Undercroft (crypt) in the Minster is interesting with Roman relics and ruins. Otherwise, just explore the city, visit the Shambles, (it's a mediaeval Street) Enjoy your visit!

What they all said. There is a brewery museum almost opposite the Railway station, heading in to the city, just before the bridge.

The tours are infrequent, bu the museum pub is keenly priced! drink.gif The whole city is so small you can walk everywhere.
andym
Don't forget the Minster itself, very interesting, get one of the guided tours if you can. And climb the Tower too. As mentioned by Edgar that bookshop is well worth a visit as is P+S Models up the road from it. There is also a model railway just outside the station but I've always been too tight to pay to go in it. And the chippy in the Swinegate is good for lunch :-)

Enjoy,
Andy

If you have youngsters then Eden camp is a good visit. It's a former POW camp and each hut has a display of a different aspect of the war. Educational and entertaining.

There's a restaurant, don't recall the name near the Minster, and upstairs are some cubby hole type recesses and on one wall is a photo of the Rolling Stones ca 1965ish , with that wall behind them! Quite a weird sensation really! Ancient history everywhere!! Nice place - food was good too!!

York's great!!! the Railway Museum is a must!! Just potter around - you'll love it!!! Great pub's /cafe's. Great atmosphere - freindly natives!!

P&S Hobbies on Walmgate. By far the BEST in Yoprk, and about 5 mins walk from the Minster. Loads of aircraft, all scale and manufacturers, and plenty of armour etc etc.

If you like railway's you could go up the road to Pickering and have a go on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway - just make sure you have deep pockets if you want a ride..

Eden Camp at Malton is a great day out.
One of the huts has a "U-Boot" theme- when you go in a certain room, the alarms go off,the lights start flashing and the sub starts sinking. My daughter went completely hysterical!! (She was
about 6 at the time)She thought it was really scary!

Yes,

recomend eden camp, and going up to the railway, take a trip to Goathland where they filmed Heartbeat (if you are a fan).

One thing I would say is dont waste your money on the Jorvik.

Also maybe just me but I find charging to go into a Cathedral wrong. My parents used to live in York and you were able to pop in at one time but they have stopped all that. Pretty much money to go in, extra for photos, extra for this, extra for that.

The Railway museum is excellent, I dragged my mum in there under protest and had a hard job getting her out. I am not sure who ended up enjoying it the most!

Immediately opposite the main entrance to NYMR in Pickering is Pickering Model Centre (AKA Puffers) not a huge selection of plastic kits but a good source of 'stuff'. Dennis is a good man (I worked with him for three years elsewhere) mention that Ian and Janet sent you and it will be good for a laugh at least!

I'd agree with that. I thought it was overpriced rubbish.

I should add that I thought the Minster was worth what I paid as I was in there for some time an climbing the Tower was great fun.

I recently visited Durham cathedral too and paid £5 for a guided tour and another £5 for a ticket to all the displays and other areas there. I was there for over 3 hours, pretty good value for a tenner.

As for the railway museum I had same thing with my missus, she was a bit reluctant to go at first but once there she really enjoyed it.

Jorvik has just undergone it's third transformation, so may be better. I saw 1 and 2 over the years. I thought 1 was better.

Also recommend Eden Camp. It's a must!

Yup, new boss and the niffs are back! Use the free tickets, you need a second mortgage normally!

A 'plug' for the employer, join English Heritage, reductions on admission to Castle Howard and the NYM steam railway (Fridays only for NYM) also Jorvic.
Places to visit in the area are:-
Cliffords tower and the 'cold war' bunker in York (R.O.C. 'sector' station, you will NEED to 'phone first, limited to 60 persons).
P&S Hobbies (closed Wednesdays) Barbican books, (right down the back on the ground floor) Monk Bar models and the Railway museum.
Kirkham Priory - 11th armoured were here between September '43 and May '44. Oh, so am i ?!!! plus the occasional 'Eagle', 'Tonka', 'Tiffie', 'Hawk' and shed loads of Toucanos!
Eden camp, just off the A64, you can see it from the road to Pickering.
Pickering Castle, er...Pickering! with 'Puffers' and NYMR.
Scarborough castle, and the OTHER P&S hobbies! (ALSO closed Wednesdays) Oh, and 'Arrows' toy shop.
Whitby Abbey (someone 'broke' the bridge! so you can take a VERY short boat ride, at a £1 a pop and a VERY long climb up the 199 steps, or, the FREE shuttle bus!) also Andersons (toymaster)
Bylands Abbey, good pub opposite!
Reivaulx Abbey, good cafe on site.
Middleham Castle, emm, you might just pass R.A.F. Leeming............... analintruder.gif
Richmond Castle, and the DLI museum in the town square, book shop and a good chippy yards away!
Don't forget Elvington, though don't know if the Victor is still WAY down in the distance?!
TIP:- Drop the wife off at the shopping centre.....RESULT!!
If the weather is decent get up onto the Moors, can recommend the 'Lion' on Blakey ridge, go HUNGRY!
Gothland a.k.a. 'Aidensfield', R.A.F. Fylindales away in the distance.
Theres also Rosedale Abbey, nice village, good cafe and a decent pub on the Pickering side called 'the Coach House'.
But, in the end, enjoy your time, unwind and don't do too much travelling.

Hope this is useful,

Paul
