If I have missed anyone off the list please let me know.

Am looking forward to this GB as it will afford for most of us an adventure into new realms of modelling.
Plenty of time to sort out rules and definitions, but the main thing is to have a blast.
and welcome aboard the GB of Futures Past chaps!
Phil W
It gives me time to get the bits together too!

walrus
Thanks for that Pilgrim! biggrin.gif

Me too Phil.
I think if I can get some old ship bits together it will be a whole lot easier to bash than scratch
Christopher
I like the timeframe - what I have planned is elaborate and going to take a bit of planning. I was thinking of an imaginary Vice-Regal transport from British Empire days.
walrus
Ditto Christopher

Have received a bit of a boost thanks to a generous member of the Sheffield model Group.

Have a Tamiya 1/700 Shokaku WW2 aircraft carrier kit to play with,
I really like the look of it, tbh. If it was 1/350 I would just have to build it as it comes oob!
Any hoo it looks like I have a basic frame work and some of the parts will be really useful! biggrin.gif
There are no instructions, but they are for cissies, and it isn't like I am going to need them laugh.gif
CliffB
Looking forward to this one (I think boom.gif ).

My current plans are based on a steam powered Vickers Vimy Commercial.

See you all down the road.

Cliff

I just purchased this fellow to go alongside with my build. Im thinking a steam flyer.

Its a representation of Calbraith Perry Rodgers. (i didnt know who he was either)

walrus
Cool and cool chaps biggrin.gif

That is a nice looking sculpt Pilgrim
I knew who he was and didn't even have to copy and paste his name into the Google search engine smartass.gif fraidnot.gif

When: TBA (late 2011/Early2012)

Hosts: Walrus and Deon

When it comes to setting the dates, could I put in a personal request please for the GB to start by 1st November at the latest (if that's OK)?

Thanks smile.gif

Cliff
Deon
May it be so smile.gif Although I just gave the base model for my steam flying sub to a freind, so Ill have to come up with another idea... ahhh there's one.. Colonial land ship, floated by antigravetium mined from Tibet, Nepal and India ( that's what the east iNdia company were really after) with steam powered grapnels for hauling up slopes, a brace of gatling guns and a hold full of bootnecks smile.gif
walrus
It's down to Mish Cliff wink.gif

Wot for you give your steampunk bitz away for Deon? tongue.gif

The base model was a 1/48th tempest, to be reversed and upturned to make a 1/72 steam sub with wings, but a friend wanted to try one, so off it goes smile.gif Ive been waiting years to get the land ship project going and nows the chance, my only quandary is whether to attach tracked tripod outriggers, or leave it as a floater. I might scribble some rough plans and let the massive decide.
walrus
Don't like the sound of a floater who-let-rip.png tongue.gif

A 1/48 Tempest?!? it gets worse frantic.gif

Sounds good stuff and yes we like concept designs! thumbsup.gif
CPNGROATS
Add me to this crowd...I'm thinking of something from the John Carter of Mars series of novels by Edgar Rice Burrows. Some flying machine from the Helium Empire....

Cheers,
ggc
walrus
Sounds Ace ggc!
Didn't know Tarzan went to Mars unsure.gif
CPNGROATS
Burrows wrote more than just the Tarzan series....John Carter, ex US Cival war soldier, gets teleported to MARS and since the gravity on Earth is heavier than Mars he is possessed with above average strength and agility [ by Martian standards] good thing too, since the bad guy "green" martians are 10 feet tall and have four arms. The good Martians are red and John Carter joins forces with the red Martians of Helium to wage war with the green guys....The warring powers have lighter than air ships and airiel battle royal is commonplace...

A good read if your of the mind.... analintruder.gif

HeliumCheers,
ggc
walrus
Dohh! Still fink it woulda been better wiv Tarzan laugh.gif
Sounds interesting.
I would like to hear the talking book narrated by a famous actor sucking on the helium

CPNGROATS
That would be cool, say..... Sir Richard Burton sounding a bit like Donald Duck .... analintruder.gif

A more literate thought on John Carter....

"YEATES: J. C. is an enigma, an eternal fighting man who never ages, but always appears about thirty. When the story begins he has just lost everything in the American War Between the States where he was a Captain from Virginia, so he heads west in search of gold. While hiding from Apaches in a mysterious Arizona cave he is overcome by some sort of gas, loses consciousness, and wakes up having separated from his earthly body, which appears to be lying dead at his feet. Looking out of the cave at the night sky he sees the planet Mars, his god, the god of the fighting man, and is mystically, instantly, teleported there. Or something like that. "

BTW Disney is working on an animated feature film "John Carter of Mars" scheduled for release in 2012..

Martian Cheers,
ggc

Have just seen this on another forum

Have a Tu-95 1/100 kit that is desperate for anything but building as a Tu-95.
could bash something along these lines.

what do you guys think?

also I rather like this video:
Basosz
Oh this is just perfect... If anything Steampunk is allowed... I have this idea of making a Steampunk version of the "Most Useless Machine". The stupid little thing that turns itself off.

YouTube link to Useless Machine

It's not an aeroplane or AFV or anything at all like that... But I do really want to make it Steampunk AND functional !

Allowed or not?
walrus
laugh.gif
steampunk fridge so you can try and see if the light goes off when you close the door if it is what you want as far as I'm concerned!
Just as long as it is steampunk
Pilgrim_UK
That anime, The last exile, is not bad but calling one of the main characters Lavie Head cracks me up.

Or as we say up here "haw lavvy heid".
walrus
laugh.gif
How did I ever miss that one? doh.gif

I liked Last Exile, but in common with a lot of Anime series of that sort the ending was weak imho
walrus
Some nice Steampunk minis here (look 28mm heroic scale?)

some nice stuff
look at the dio's in the headers! coolio.gif
Bill Neill
Well I'm still good for Hansen's Aerial Steam Carriage just hope you are not in a hurry
Bill
walrus
Can't say there is any need to worry about time just yet Bill
iirc it will be 2012 when the GB goes ahead.
Mind you the way this year has speed by it might not be a bad idea to be thinking about it already!
Am still toying around with ideas from what I have availabe and unfortunately have had an extravagant and wholly unrealisable concept for an airship.
Look forward to the Hansen's biggrin.gif
walrus
Couple of concept sketches
sorry for the poor quality of the flying ship but had to take it with the camera.

Am getting the hang a bit more of drawing on the graphics tablet so hopefully the next pics will improve

Some Steampunkish concepts for Necromunda skirmish game figures

Deon
Love the steamship thing Walrus, any idea what scale?

I've just come up with another idea.. A amphibious gun wheel, like a merry go round with waterproof gunnery and accomodation gondolas, not sure how Im going to start it off, but I'll need some largish scratch built wheels and a central boat hulled gondola to house the engine, or maybe more like a tracklaying paddle steamer which trundles around on its paddlewheels. They'll probably be built to match my 15mm colonial and franco Prussian stuff. I will get some sketches done eventually, but not anywhere near as goods as those above smile.gif
walrus
Thanks Deon
No idea about scale yet. Am thinking that there maybe a bit more than I can chew in the confines of a GB as it will be all cobbled together.
Am slow enough with a 1/72 single seat aircraft OOB!

I may opt to develop and scratch build some 28mm figures for a Necromunda gang which would be more practical, but no less time consuming.
Doubt if a full gang could be finished. However it would be useful for me to get a gang.

I love the concept of the amphibious craft!
Look forward to the concepts!
walrus
Just a thought for the posse to muse upon.

I am assuming that with this GB there will be a higher percentage of scratchbuilding.
Would it be acceptable for preparitory work pre-GB?
For example, if several gun turrets were required from scratch, they could be sub assembled/mould made etc.

This would not be allowed however if the parts came from a donor kit.

what do you think chaps? would it get too messy with grey areas?
please discuss
worm
I've got some idea's brewing from the Mortal Engines series of books by Philip Reeve and a few other things so count me in please.
Thanks

I think the 25% rule might work here.. say, no more than 25% percent of the components prebuilt, no more than 25% of the model assembled? What do others think?

walrus
Sounds pretty good to me Deon.

Like the SU-37 better Ben seems more the part.
The WW1 Apache is somehow less convincing as a concept, though it sure is beautifully done!

Couple of concepts for 28mm Steampunk Necromunda figures:

You should read the others in the series too, Mortal Engines (2001), Predator's Gold (2003), Infernal Devices (2005), and A Darkling Plain (2006), plus there's the prequels to the Mortal Engines books following Fever Crumb, Fever Crumb (2009) and A Web of Air (2010) as well as a film being made called Mortal Engines.

Saw and bought a 1/150 Heller Amerigo Vespucci today and it scream's Steampunk, shes a 1930's Italian three mast training ship with a propeller as well, so she'll get back dated and may be torpedo tubes and gun turrets added all with a little twist. cool.gif wink.gif
