Many years ago in the mid 90s, I got one of these kits and built it but not very well. I hadn't been modelling since I was a teenager and the paints I used were rubbishy acrylics that I was using to paint metal figures for AD&D, so the end result wasn't very good and in the years since, its been a bit banged up and one of the flaps has broken off. I also managed to get a lot of silvering in the decals because I hadn't worked out you can't apply decals to a matt painted surface.

So now to the present day and I was able to get one off eBay without having to remortgage, in fact I got the Special Edition one - whoo hoo! Badges ahoy!

So I was thinking I'd build the Tigermeet... er I mean Sheridan Starfury...

Just for comparison, here is the original Starfury I built in the 90s:

Can't honestly say I'm very impressed and there are all sorts of things wrong with the guns etc...

So now I have the opportunity to build a better version.

This should be interesting. I have one in the stash somewhere - I believe you could/can get upgrades for the guns, decals & such from somewhere... possibly starshipmodeller?

Looking forward to this - brings back some good memories!

I was massively into B5 when it was first shown, so when Revell released the kit I bought two, then bought the special edition when I could get my hands on it! The first was built as a Black Omega, the second as the Presidential Escort and the SE kit as Sinclair's Battle of the Line fighter. I've still got the first one and the SE kit in my bedroom. The Pres Escort was chucked a few years ago as I was never happy with it.

Indeed, the Starship Modeller Babylon 5 pages are my bible on this one :)

What really impressed me in the series was they used proper physics in the tactics the fighters used. No banking like in a aircraft (Yes Star Wars I'm looking at YOU!), but accelerate in one direction, cut thrusters, spin and fire in any direction while maintaining the original heading then fire thrusters again to change direction.

You know Star wars is looking back at you in its trillion blinged out X-wing going "whatever". :D

Big fan of B5 back in 'the day' and just watched them all again one of the Sky channels (watch?) so looking forward to seeing this completed model.

Cheers

Big fan of B5 too - got all the DVDs, as well as 6 of the kit (only 2 built) and the station - had a mad plan once upon a time of building a cobra bay full. Who knows, this might even inspire me to build one of the ones still sat on top of my wardrobe, although I think the Moebius moon bus is going to be my entry for this GB (when I get around to starting it).

it might be a while before you see any progress on this - I'm currently building an India/Burma based Spitfire VIII for the Pacific GB and then will be doing the Thunderbirds Firefly rescue vehicle for the Emergency Service GB...

I'd like a White Star, so I can wizz it around the room while yelling "GET THE HELL OUT OF OUR GALAXY!!!"

That is a very nifty model!

How much do these things go for on eBay? This thread has made me wonder if I'll ever build mine, so I guess I'm thinking about pooping or getting off the pot :hmmm:

I've got one of these in the stash, along with a couple of SSM replacement gun sets and decal sheets.

Will keep an eye on this one.

I don't think Starship Modeller are doing the gun sets anymore. No sign of them on the site anywhere. I'm going to have to make do with fixing up the kit ones I reckon. Good news is the lighting kit arrived today :D

I have tried to get one of these forever but not going to pay $50 for one so they keep going out of my price range. Think my oldest might have tried to do one of these and since he gave me all his kits, may have to do some digging to see if I am right and how much has been done.

SSM did carry the guns and if you email John he might be willing to get a set for you. Have an article someplace on how to make the guns in the kit look right but don't think that is online anymore either.

Revell had planned on rereleasing the kit this year but something fell through and it is no longer listed (drat).

Yes there is an article on Starship modeller about how to make the guns look right, I've got that printed off and ready for detailed study when I start the build.

Not started building yet but some news... I emailed John at StarShip Modeller and he told me that he should have a new supply of resin gun replacements very soon, ie November-ish, so that is excellent news - I should have finished my Spitfire VIII and Thunderbirds Firefly by then, just in time for the Starfury extravaganza!!!

...and there's more...

The lighting kit arrived a week or so ago and yesterday the transparencies arrived from DLM:

DSCF4696.JPG

So what you see in the pic:

Top left, the printed out instructions from the PDF on the mini-CD shown. This is 6 pages of wiring and assembly instructions for the lighting.

Top right a page of photos and illustrations that came with the transparencies set from Doug's Light and Magic

Bottom Right the instructions for installing the transparencies in the engines and how to use the cockpit marks and decals

Bottom left lots of bits for the lighting, including: mini-socket to install in the bottom of the model and the plug that is attached to the stand to transfer the power. Another larger lug and socket to fit into the base to use to connect to your 12v DC power supply. Small circuit board that redistributes the power to the LEDs. Fibre optics (long black "wire") set of LEDs all labelled with their intended use. Heat shrink cladding. Decals and masks for the cockpit. Blue transparencies for the engines and the transparent cockpit. (There is also a bundle of fine wire but that slipped into the box before I took the photo and I didn't notice it being missing until just now!)

Like I said, lots o bits! I'm really looking forward to starting this :D
