Doug Rogers Posted May 30, 2011 Posted May 30, 2011 (edited) This is my entry for the GB, the ubiquitous Italeri kit; This is the scheme I'll be going for; Think I'll probably just get a couple of resin seats to freshen it up a bit. Edited August 30, 2011 by Doug Rogers
spike7451 Posted May 30, 2011 Posted May 30, 2011 Good choice there!! I was at Bruggen in 1991,best tour I ever done!
Doug Rogers Posted June 30, 2011 Author Posted June 30, 2011 Made a start on the seats and cockpit, got a couple of Neomega seats to freshen the area up a bit; Before; After; Got a little cleaning up to do here and there. Been making up the ordnance as well, more soon.
Doug Rogers Posted July 14, 2011 Author Posted July 14, 2011 Got some more done today, modelling time seems to be getting harder to find these days! Didn't like the look of the tail plane set up with those tabs the kit provides, so did a bit of surgery. Removed the tabs and drilled a hole ready for a brass spindle. CA'd a brass shaft into the rear of the fuselage where the tailplanes pivot Made up a spindle for the tailplanes to fit inside the shaft Here they are in-situ, but not glued on yet, probably leave them off 'til later for ease of painting ...and here's where I've finished this morning, looking a bit more like an aircraft! More on Monday/Tuesday.
AndyC Posted July 14, 2011 Posted July 14, 2011 Doug Looks great. I might nick the brass rod spindle idea for my 1/32 ECR. I was looking at the join of that (and the wings) last night and gave me a bit of head-scratching. Andy
Doug Rogers Posted July 14, 2011 Author Posted July 14, 2011 Thanks guys! Andy - I usually use 3/32in for the outer, and 1/16in for the inner spindle. It should fit snugly inside without any slack, worth ckecking at the shop though before you buy it, guess it depends on wall thickness. Having said that I've never had any probs with it.

Thanks Doug I've got the 3/32 at home - and another size but can't remember what it is...thanks for that - a great help. My own updates will be online tonight! Andy
martin77 Posted July 14, 2011 Posted July 14, 2011 Nice tonka, starting to look good now, cant wait for more. I like the look of the 9sqn with the white fin, very nice.

jacksdad Posted July 14, 2011 Posted July 14, 2011 Nice work so far Doug. As for the stab/rod thing I have used that method before and it makes life so much easier, especially at the painting stage. Steve
SaintsPhil Posted July 14, 2011 Posted July 14, 2011 Coming together nicely there! I think I'll nick that idea for my 2 1/72 tornados! I was wondering what to do to make tails easier! Phil
Doug Rogers Posted August 27, 2011 Author Posted August 27, 2011 Sorry Steve, been quite tied up recently with overtime and stuff, it's touch and go but I'm still optimistic!
spike7451 Posted August 28, 2011 Posted August 28, 2011 Coming on very nicely indeed, sympathetically weathered just right.Just a couple of points for you to ponder. 1-You'd never see an RAF GR1 (or even a GR4) parked with the wings swept back like that as it'd fall on it's tail,The's a fuel tank in the GR1 verticle fin which was removed on the GR4. 2-You'd also never see 2 Skyshadow ECM pods on a jet as only the port (left) pylon is wired for them, you'd see 2 BOZ pods tho with the one replacing the Skyshadow being a drill ballast pod. Oh,and the bombs are the wrong color....
Doug Rogers Posted August 28, 2011 Author Posted August 28, 2011 What, did they forget to put the 30g of ballast in the nose when they made them? The BOZ pods are the pointy things in the kit are they, no sweat, I can attach one of them. What colour should the bombs be, more of a RAF green sort of colour?

LOL,Yep,the BOZ are the pointy missile looking things, bombs are a bottle green in color. These are the standard 1000lb bombs with LGB kit bolted on.
Doug Rogers Posted August 28, 2011 Author Posted August 28, 2011 Cheers mate, as you've probably sussed, modern jets aren't my normal fayre!
spike7451 Posted August 28, 2011 Posted August 28, 2011 No drama's,incidentally your build got me thinking,I was at Bruggen in 1991 & I can't recall seeing any gray Tornado's during that time.....They were still gray/green then.
Doug Rogers Posted August 28, 2011 Author Posted August 28, 2011 Ah well, blame Italeri for that one, that's the scheme on the side of the box! I need to paint some green camo on the fuel tanks though. Maybe it was very late '91...like '92 or something!
Doug Rogers Posted August 29, 2011 Author Posted August 29, 2011 Just about managed to finish her off today. Didn't find it an easy build TBH, but she looks OK on the shelf with the Harrier. More pics in the gallery.
