Minicraft 707 as Qantas V-Jet Options

Sorry to hijack the thread a little Kev.

Be my guest Ray! I couldn't really answer the question anyway. Minicraft's various 707 boxings are purportedly a mess, and you really need to know which one has the parts you need for your target machine.

Working on a 1/144 Qantas A380 at the mo!

I've got one of those in the pipeline too! Whose stickers are you using?

I have built both the Pan Am and Air Force on boxings as RAAF Tankers... See below :-)

Do you notice any difference? I thought not. As for the Hawkeye conversion set I may have parts for one. The first one I did did not use Hawkeye parts, I used the refuelling pods from a Airfix VC-10 tanker kit and made the Camera station for a clear piece of sprue (not hard to shape it and mask).

I will take a look to see if I can find the parts I have (I think they are just the resin refuel pods) and you can have them.

G'day Ray,well this is the kit I have for the 707 and the kit for the Super Hornets.




The decals I'll be using and the refuelling pods that I'm lucky enough to have got as a pair.They look close enough to what I've seen on the real planes up close.BUT......I was told there is a difference in the model from Minicraft and the real planes the RAAF use.




I have some good close up pics to try and scratch some bits and bobs,just wanted to know 100% as I'm thinking of entering it as a standing vignette in the show come june/july at Sandown.
These are some pics I've got of a whole album.I have a whole heap of other RAAF jets and Airliners.net has plenty more for some accurate stuff.I'm just a lil dumb in spotting the subtle differences.I'll probably trim the pods props for the motor to tw blades but not sure how to replicate the lights other than try and trim tiny bits of plasticard and fill.To be honest,would it really matter? Wouldn't the RAAF 707 use modern US kit anyway now we have the FA/18F SH ?

Just finished this one on Friday. It's Minicraft's 707, using the TWA boxing but with engines swapped from another kit (thanks to Jessie C if you're out there!). The decals are from Hawkeye and feature Qantas' 1965 V-Jet scheme.

Hey Kev...the one surviving image I have of the day John Travolta flew his V-Jet into Melbourne a few years back.The others are on a disk somewhere in my burmuda triangle garage. Hope you like it? Taken on the taxiway from a moving vehicle doing about 60km/h !! Note the missing Aussie flag.

Ray,how did you do the refuelling probe on the Hornet? I don't think my Dragon kits have the provision for it.

G'day Ray,well this is the kit I have for the 707 and the kit for the Super Hornets.

The kit is fine, it depicts 707-300 which the QANTAS/RAAF aircraft are. There are other kits around with different wings and engines. Yours is fine. The only thing tyou need to change to make it a 320C (or 338C) is to scribe a cargo door onthe forward fuselage.

The Refuelling pods are a different matter, they look like to be fighter buddy pods and are not right for the Flight Refueling pods used by the RAAF and other Air Forces.

You need to find a Airfix VC-10 kit and steal those, I think I have a spare set of resin pods from Hawkeye, though last time I looked for them I could not find them. I will have a look for them and get back to you.

I cut a slot into the Hornet fuselage and backed it with card. The probe is one I got from a Revell Tornado I think, the basket came from the Hawkeye set and the hose is piece of brass rod bent to shape.

Some time in the future I will be doing this all again in 1/72 I have all the kits, conversions and decals ready. Just need ot find the time and space to do it!

I also have all the gear to do a KC-30 in 1/144, just need to get the Super Hornets and decals to complete that set.

Nice set of window decals as well.

Thanks for that info Adrian. I've seen another Qantas A380 build using the Two-Six gear, and it looked pretty good (amazing in fact). I'll have to get me some. Sounds like you've got a bit of thing for Qantas birds! My civil collection will be largely based around Australian liveries, with Qantas obviously featuring heavily.

Thanks mate,I have some good pics of the cargo door actually,some from inside too if you're interested for your 72nd kit.I might have a crack at a flying vignette as opposed to a standing version as I think it looks more dramatic. If you can find those refuelling pods that would be great,if not,can you let me know the details of the parts and I'll email Hawkeye direct?

Had a look for the pods but could not find them, On my first one I actually made the pods from drop tanks out of my spares bin. I think I have a maintenance publication diagram of the pod somewhere if you would like a copy.

Check the Hawkeye website under the conversions area. It will give the product number for the conversion set.
