Navy Bird Posted June 9, 2012 Posted June 9, 2012 Hi mates, In the 2012 Airfix catalog, the 1:72 Dauntless is simply shown as "New for 2012," it doesn't say "New Tool" like the P-51D or the Spit MK.22. So I guess the correct assumption is that the Dauntless kit is a re-release of an older kit? Anybody here know for sure? Cheers, Bill
Nick Millman Posted June 9, 2012 Posted June 9, 2012 I happily remember this kit when it first appeared. It was molded in dark blue with crisp surface detail that was the bee's knees at the time. It had the new style crew figures (they first appeared in the Arado 196 I think) and a canopy that could sort of be posed open. And the original Roy Cross artwork of a Dauntless hot footing it along above a smoke pall with a Zero on its tail still appears on the Airfix website. I bought it surreptitiously on the way home from school because I was already too old for "plastic kits" and spent ages looking at the box art and daydreaming about it instead of doing my homework.
hacker Posted June 9, 2012 Posted June 9, 2012 if my memory serves me correctly it was not a bad kit at all. A little sparse cockpit wise but for the time a pretty accurate and decent kit. I enjoyed building it

Great story! I often wonder whether I still am modeling because I refuse to grow up! I remember my parents being upset if I bought a model with my allowance. I'll bet that today's parents wouldn't mind that at all compared to video games, piercings, tattoos, holodecks and whatever else the kids are buying nowadays. Cheers, Bill
Work In Progress Posted June 9, 2012 Posted June 9, 2012 (edited) It's not just modelling. In the aviation world people often tell variations on the following joke : Little boy: Mummy, Mummy, can I be a pilot when I grow up? Mother: No. You can either do one or the other. It even had different pilot and gunner figures...cool! John
Paul J Posted June 9, 2012 Posted June 9, 2012 (edited) I've still got one in the original Series 2 smaller box issue with the red band! And the plastic is good quality and in the dark blue. Edited June 9, 2012 by Paul J
Luis Alfonso Posted June 9, 2012 Posted June 9, 2012 Ok, resolved mistery, sentimental feelings come to our minds. I think everyone here and there across the globe were building in one time or another those magnificent old Airfix kits, so just like in those old but not forgotten times, again Nick will be back from School, Navy Bird parents would be a little upset but smiling wherever they are, I am beginning to collect my money and planning my school scape to go to the Hobby Shop, and everyone will be getting nice and happy memories and be back in the time for a few moments and even tough maybe have better or this same one in the stash, will get ready to buy this one again, but this time I'm sure we will buy more than one Cheers,
