Black Arrows Hunters

I'm getting close to decaling my 1/72nd Revell Hunter as a Black Arrows aircraft.

I have the Extradecal set X046-72 for the decals but I have a query.

What colour are the serials?

The sheet provides the serials in white,I allways thought the Black Arrows had red serials.

All my photo's show red serials on the teams aircraft, but did XF506 have white? or is it a big mistake by Extradecal!

Shaun.

I think confusion my have arisen due to confusion with the colours of the pilot's names. I'm sure I read somewhere that these were initially white but changed later to red. Of course, I can't find that reference now..........!

The pilot names were at one stage applied in yellow, at least according to Dick Ward's info. According to all supporting evidence, the serials were always red.

The Hunters were gloss finished, roundels included, and polished of course!

You might care to know that my mammoth Hunter book (published by Crecy) will be off to the printers shortly so it'll be in the shops probably by March. Lashings of (hopefully correct - for a change) blurb, photos and drawings for Hunter afficionados!

Look forward to that one Tim!! Will you be signing copies at your local WH Smith?

Not much chance of that these days (thank heavens!) - it's a minor miracle if Smiths even stock an aeroplane book now. How times have changed. Maybe if I included a chapter on cookery...

One thing to note regarding the Xtradecal sheet..the fin flash has a white surround on all four edges; The "Arrows" scheme only had white edging at the front and rear (so its okay if your doing an all blue 92 Sqn Blue Diamonds F6!), so remember to remove the white section top & bottom.

Thanks for the tip Bill, I'll remember that when I start decaling.

Shaun.

Tim, any idea what the title of your book will be and what it will cost?

WH Smith still stock a heap of aircraft books (they even have the new Air Britain Historians Sea Vixen book listed!) - you just have to look in the right place - their website!! (and they deliver free to your local store too!) One of my favourite places for buying books these days....

Oh true, and they do sell the odd item (the website is a cheat though as they don't have to buy lots of stock to sell through that outlet)but compared to say twenty years ago, you may as well forget WH Smiths as a useful book shop. These days they're all about celebrity biographies and other such piffle, and the magazine section is crammed full of weekly "free gift" partwork garbage. It's kinda sad that the publishing industry still grovels round them begging for shelf space but that's the way it is - they have too many outlets to ignore but their rampant commercialism has probably killed-off more interesting books than just about any other company, I reckon! Grr!
