Test Graham Posted January 12, 2008 Share Posted January 12, 2008 I understand that in normal Russian usage it is the sense of "again", or "encore", but in aircraft it is usually applied after a considerable redesign of the type, more significant that the regular upgrading. In the case of the MiG 21 it was a structural redesign. It was also used of the I-15bis, and this was followed by the I-15ter, more commonly known as the I-153. Usually taken to mean the next version of something...originally used by Santos DuMont and his no.14 Biplane and the No.14Bis that followed. Something like that anyway... Dave Fleming Posted January 14, 2008 Share Posted January 14, 2008 In russian use it's actually derived form the French usage meaning second or improved version - e.g. Nie 17bis for the imporved Nieuport 17. french was the language of the Russian Imperial Court and it appears to have come from there.
