The British 8th Army was one of the most famous Allied formations of the Second World War and was most notable for its involvement in the North African and Italian campaigns. Although commanded by British officers, the 8th Army was comprised of soldiers from all over the British Empire.

Revell’s set of 50 figures depicts Scottish soldiers of an unnamed regiment of the 8th Army. Arriving in a compact end-opening box are just two sprues of figures. Unsurprisingly, no decals are included and, as no assembly is required, no instructions. The pieces are moulded in a flexible, beige plastic which Revell recommend you give a good wash prior to painting.

Although the figures have some flash and mould seams that will need to be cleaned up, the quality of moulding is actually very impressive. The figures are well detailed, with little touches like folds in clothing being very nicely rendered.

A variety of figures are included, including a rather nice seated figure having a bite to eat, a moustachioed officer with a pistol and, predictably for a set of Scottish infantry, a bagpipe player. Three of the figures have bipod mounted Bren Guns, while the rest have either rifles or Tommy Guns. Full colour painting instructions are set out on the rear of the box.

Conclusion

This is a nice little set from Revell. Although better figures are available, these usually come at a relatively high price. Revell’'s mouldings are surprisingly refined and, with 50 figures supplied in the box, a pretty good value alternative.
