Revell / HBM 1/72 Avro Manchester 1a

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

I'm going to be entering with a HMB conversion to a Manchester 1a using the Revell kit and the conversion set supplied by Smudge. I'm kinda pooing myself as I've never undertook such a project ! Must say though, I'm looking forward to it.

Now my biggest challenge is fitting the wings to the Revell kit as it was designed to fit the Airfix kit. Has anyone here done this and if so, can you offer any advice to achieve this ?

I've got a Revell 742 (being finished in BOAC scheme) on the bench at the moment which should be finished over the weekend, so I'll look to start the Manchester next week.

Any advice, guidance, inspiration and devine support appreciated !

Still can't believe I only found out about this group build this week !

ps....where can I get some decent decals for a MkIa ?

Cheers

Neil

Finally got the 747 off the bench and made a start today trimming the resin up. Will get some pictures up this week. I'm torn at the moment whether to sit on the wheels or whether to put it on a stand in flying pose. Decisions, decisions ....!

I'm really looking forward to seeing this one built. I actually think the Manchester looks better than the Lancaster. Probably heresy but there you have it.

OK, took some pictures this morning. Not much to show so far. Main challenge will be securing the wings to the fuselage, got a few ideas, but still thinking about this one. The HBM kit is designed to fit the Airfix kit, but I'm using the Revell one, so the wing mount is completely different and the wing profile is slightly different.

The diameter of the front of the engine is smaller than the Revell prop hubs. The hubs are quite thin, so there will be limited ability to sand them. Anyone any ideas how to get a more matching set without building lots of filler onto the engine ?

I put a bit of primer on the assembled wing today and it looks pretty good. The colour of the resin makes it look worse. Not saying that it's not taking some patience, but went to work happy today that I'd made some good progress. As long as I can secure them to the fuselage and I can get the wheels struts to locate correctly, I'm confident that she's gonna look fine. Decided for the wheels so it can stand next to my other Lanc (and CMR Lanc BII which all being well I may be able to squeeze in to this group build assuming I get my bonus as planned at the end of this month !!!)

wow, I think the phrase 'some modelling skill required' is an understatement when it comes to this conversion set! You sound confident about it though so I'm looking forward to seeing this take shape.

Best of luck with the wing/fuselage join!

Cheers Rowan. Been doing a bit more filling to tidy the engine area up this morning and trying to figure out where the little inlet pods go on the engines. Should have a picture of a completed wing tomorrow.

Great work so far Woody. :clap2:

I will be watching this with interest as I have the same set from Smudge. :D

What wheels will you be using for this? The kit Lanc ones or another?

Not sure yet mate. I've been totally immersered in getting the wing tidied up as this is a new level of skill for me ! If I get time tomorrow, I'll get onto some dry fitting of the undercart to see how it fits and compare the wheels. The resin ones from Smudge look very nice.

Since I got back into modelling last year, I've been using Halfords primer because its a bigger tin for less money, however I got some Tamiya stuff this week and love it. Coverage is much better so I'm expecting a better yield.

Depending how extreme the difference in spinner back/engine front diameters are, could you get away with carefully shaving back the engine fronts to achieve a fit ????

That's a splendid idea, thanks. If I do the same to the spinners, hopefully they might meet in the middle !

I love it when a plan comes together !!!

This morning I decided to swap the exhaust shrouds for the kit ones (cut down in length), so did that and some scribing. Pretty happy with wing No.1, many lessons learned, but thoroughly enjoyable. The hardest part was the intake scoop on the wing getting it smoothed out and 'round' !

Anyway, here's the last few daysa work...

You might be able to 'adapt' decals from RAFDEC sheet 7207 - it features an early 207 Sqn Lancaster. As the unit had recently converted from Manchesters, it has the right style of roundels as well as EM-F codes that you might be able to use. Of course, you would have to replace the serial.

Cheers. Colin is sourcing me some from his decal bank, along with some needed photo's to help with the detailing. Many thanks for your help Colin.

Bit more progress on the wings this weekend. Looking at reference pictures, the leading edge intakes outboard of the engine were too big, so I cut them off, drilled holes and inserted plastic rod then used filler to blend it in. Also when I came to start the second wing, it was much thinner than the first, so I put that on a slimfast program to get them more even. Next steps for the wings is to scribe the detail and look about adding the leading edge landing lights and wingtip navigation lights. More nervous cutting...tikes !

Bit more progress today. Just been and bought some 4mm aluminium rod from B&Q to act as two spars. Drilled 4mm holes into the wings and dry fitted them. To my amazement, they hold the wings in place well. I thought I would have to secure the rods to the fuselage to stop the wings from slipping, but so far the gods are with me !!

Hi Paul,

No there were no props in the kit. You may well be right as the Vulture was two engines in one, so suspect a bigger prop was necessary to turn the torque into something usefull. Also looks like the hub was smaller than the lanc.
