Perhaps a "mini-set" with the markings to do Oblt z. S. Friedrich Christiansen's "2512" would be in order Rowan?? Odd that WW did not include them in the kit...

Cheers,

Doug

Hello Doug,

It is such a surprising omission that I would expect to see those particular markings from Wingnuts themselves at some point - possibly in a different version of the kit (there are a number of unused parts in the kit, it seems). I have a lot on my plate with other projects at the moment (including post-war Ninacks...) so if it doesn't look like they are doing them, I may well do something a little later....

If you do the Rowan could you include a mtched pair of lozenge decals for the top of the floats?

If you do them Rowan could you include a matched pair of lozenge decals for the top of the floats?

Hello,

It seems from Wingnut's own research (which is exceptionally thorough and well thought through) and backed up by others who have looked at the question, that lozenge fabric was not applied to the floats, despite it being specified by the German naval authorities. The floats were waterproofed using a tar oil, which Wingnuts have specified as black. It is possible that the appearance was actually a very dark brown.

If you think of the weathering and wear that the floats, particularly their tops, were subject to, it would be unlikely that fabric would have been applied, especially as there were wooden strakes along the float tops. If fabric was applied it would have to have been done before the strakes were fitted - which seems unlikely - or it would have worn off them through the action of the beaching/launching crews and the pilot/observer if it was applied over them. I have looked at many photographs and I can't see lozenge material in any of them. Some float tops may have been painted light grey.

As to the colours used in the kit's lozenge decals, that might be a subject for a different interpretation at some point.

I just found a very interesting photo from a WNW display at a model exhibition before the W/29 was even released. It is the current box top but the W.29 in the picture has Christiansen's markings...

It is towards the bottom of the photos...

Now that is indeed interesting! I wonder why they dropped it?
