Time for a bit of an update.

Omani Jags carried Sidewinder missiles on the outboard pylons so both of the moulded on stores need removing from their respective pylons.

CSC_0080.jpg

Likewise, the Sidewinder launchers need removing from their overwing mounts and the mounts need thinning down and filing to shape to become the overwing strakes.

CSC_0078.jpg

The launcher fits to the bottom of the pylon with the use of a sole plate which fits between the pylon and launcher. This will be made later from a piece of plastic and filed to shape.

CSC_0079.jpg

The inboard pylons look a bit pastey so I lengthened and deepened one of the originals. This will be used to make a mould and a pair of replacement pylons will be cast in resin.

CSC_0086.jpg

Chalk.........

CSC_0088.jpg

and cheese.........

CSC_0090.jpg

Intake doors altered to the closed position.

CSC_0101.jpg

Omani Jags had grey coloured cockpits (thanks for the help on that one Wardyfingers and Radek). Still got a bit of work to do. Need to add some more straps to the seat and also make a seat firing handle. Also still need to pick out a few more of the cockpit controls in yellow and finally give it all a matt coat.

CSC_0098.jpg

Finished butchering the wing for the Paragon flaps and slat set and also done a bit of experimentingat getting the correct colours for the airframe. The Model Alliance decal sheet quotes the lighter of the two colours as being BS361 Light Stone but this doesn't look quite right to my eye. I finally settled on a sand coloured base coat with a very thin coat of Light Stone sprayed on the top so that the base coat still shows through.

DSC_0091.jpg

Just a general shot to show the hoped for layout. I haven't got too carried away painting the wing as I realise there will be a lot of work to do getting a good joint between wing and fuselage...................... Sigh!

DSC_0092.jpg

Finally, a nice pic of an 8 Sqn. Jag "beating-up" the Hunter line at Thumrait................ circa early 1990's. He was moving too, I can tell you :)

Jag1.jpg

Any comments and suggestions most welcome.

Gary. :)

Some useful details:

cockpit after upgrade to GR3A

omani2mu2.jpg

Sidewinder pylon and TIALD

omani1go6.jpg

Sidewinder 9P

omani3sb5.jpg

Hope it helps.

Radek

Some good shots there Radek. Looks like I'll need to alter the forward fins on the Sidewinders.............. totally different shape to the RAF version. Good view of the soleplate between the Sidewinder launcher and the bottom of the outboard pylon too. Going to have to have another look at that cockpit as well. It looks like it's overall black to me. Perhaps it was repainted as part of the GR3A upgrade? Mmmmm................... what's a boy to do? :undecided::)

Hi Gary,

Thanks for your photos and sharing your experience of the build. I have really enjoyed your efforts thus far and am keener than ever to do an Omani Jag now. I notice (from the few photos I've seen) that the Omanis seem to carry TIALD on the stbd inner pylon much more then the RAF; I think I'll go for that look with mine.

Great work and I'm looking forward to the rest of your build.

Cheers,

Andrew

Gary don't change the pit mate thats awesome I'm 80% certain that the omani jag cockpits were grey as you've got the neomega Gr1 pit it would match it perfectly don't change it, its spot on mate

and if you want some omani jag pics with the raf ones side by side just pm me not gonna release them as there is some stuff on the pics i'm sure aren't publishable. ;) ;)

  • 1 month later...

Well, time for an update. Haven't had a lot of time lately so I've been beavering away in half hour chunks as and when but now the Xmas hols are nearly here I'm hoping to get a bit more done. Anyway here goes...............

I thought that seeing as I'm dropping the flaps and slats I may as well go the whole hog and deflect the rudder a bit as well

dsc_0001.jpg

A nice easy shape to remove

dsc_0002.jpg

Finished painting and decalling the tanks. All of the lettering on the tanks had a white background so out came the spare white decal and a sharp knife

dsc_0003.jpg

I rounded off the corners of the intakes but didn't get too carried away as I intend to fit intake blanks to this one.

dsc_0007.jpg

I've closed the intake side doors. There are actually some quite fine panel lines for the door hinges so I've tried my best not to obliterate them whilst cleaning up. It's a strange kit this one............ these lines are really finely done, yet the rest of the kit has areas which are a bit err, rough.

I've also done some work on the tubes that stick out from the gun panels. I filled the originals as they are pointing straight down and drilled out the holes again at more of an angle. I couldn't find any tube fine enough to put in the holes so resorted to solid plastic rod which I drilled out at the ends. I haven't quite finished this area yet as the tubes need sanding back to be a little more flush with the fuselage and then I'm going to re-drill them again. They look slightly wonky in places at the moment but look reasonable to the naked eye as opposed to the unforgiving camera lens. The front NACA duct was drilled out and backed with plastic as the detail was really soft on the kit parts. I also filled in the rearmost NACA duct as this was a leftover from the Heller moulding of the French Jag. This needs replacing with a small rectangular door on this version which I have still to scribe.

dsc_0005.jpg

More rescribing on the underneath especially around the gun panels and undercarriage doors. Paragon gun bulges added and ejector tubes for the empty shell-cases just behind. Also added a circular mounting plate for the flasing strobe.

dsc_0009.jpg

I've added some bracing between the fuselage sides to strengthen the area a bit and prevent the sides flexing inwards

dsc_0010.jpg

A bit more tidying up to do and then I'm going to have a go at adding some of the brown wrap around camo. I intend to paint as much of the wraparound as possible before joining the wings to the fuselage and then hopefully just touch-up the affected areas.

dsc_0011.jpg

Very impressed with the Neomega cockpit. It fits like a glove and required hardly any chopping and sanding

csc_0018.jpg

More to follow soon....................

She certainly does look nice. Everything seems to be coming together just grand and the work you've done around the gun muzzles in particular is cracking.

Awesome Gary,

This is really coming together; looks like all your effort is paying off. Hopefully with your time off you'll be able to make even more progress - perhaps there's not much more to do before painting? Awaiting more pics....

Andrew
