desmojen
I picked up a lovely copy of the original Airfix 1/24 Harrier GR1 at IPMS Avon for a song. I will be building it for this years Telford show to put on the Classis British Kits SIG stand. Now, I need to build it fairly quick but I don't want to go OOB on it. It's just too basic as it comes, especially when it comes to the cockpit and undercarriage. I've joined the Harrier SIG for references and inspiration but I'd like your opinions of the detail sets which are available. As far as I know there's only the Heritage bits and the big Flighpath set. What do get in that, and is it worth the money? Any help gratefully appreciated! Jen. hacker
flightpath and hertiage just about covers it as l dont think there is anyothers that l know of. Over at Large Scale Planes there is a really nice F/A 2 conversion going on there ( think its posted here too) Seeing the that conversion how hard would it be to make a GR5/7 or AV8B out of it??? hacker
Karl
Hi Jen, When I built the 1/24 Sea Harrier, I picked up the Heritage cockpit set and Ive got to say that I would have probably been better off just detailing the existing Airfix cockpit parts; in fact I used the Airfix bang seat and detailed that myself rather than use the Heritage seat as some of the detail on that was wrong and the casting was a bit variable. I did use the tub, combing and instrument panel from the heritage set - but only to say that I actually done something with the resin bit's I'd purchased extra, rather than just put them all to one side. Cheers Karl Edited August 29, 2007 by Karl

Hi Jen, further to my other reply, when I built mine - five years ago - I used the Heritage cockpit set, but not the seat. I used the kits seat as the basis and scratch-built the head rest, harness etc., with reference to photo's supplied by Nick Greenall of the HARSIG. Well worth checking out the HARSIG website. Additionally my GR3 build appeared as an article in SAMI in late 2002/early 2003. I don't know where my copy of that article is, but they may have back copies? As for the Heritage set, I found it very useable - and it was a great improvement on the kits 30+ year old basic parts..BUT, (sorry Ian!) it wasn't as crisp or as finely detailled as many other resin suppliers were issuing. That said as Ian has indicated newer revamped parts, then maybe this has improved. I DO have the 1/24th undercarriage wheel/sets and these are very nicely tooled and moulded. typhoon
I bought a few 1/24 and 1/48 Harrier Herritage sets at SMW 2006 - I haven't used them yet because some of the castings are unusable. To be honest it put me off buying anything else. If there are new sets available is there any chance of swapping old (unused) sets for new at SMW 2007??? I've joined the Harrier SIG Bill, you can't look at the pics until you do. I expect the website joining details will be through before long. At the moment, I'm erring towardsthe Flightpath set, but it would be nice to see some pics or something of what you actually get in it. I've seen pics of the Heritage stuff, but the feedback seems variable, and some of the stuff in the pictures doesn't look mega. Also, the Flightpath set contains a lot of extra stuff (not that I'll be needing the sidewinders!) Is that fact that all the sets are for a GR3 going to have any impact? Jen. The only picture I've got is of the unused ejection seat: Nick from the Harrier SIG is moving house at the moment; I don't know if he is the only one who looks after membership stuff for the SIG though. Here is the Airfix GR.1 as '11' fitted with the big jugs. She was originally 'M'. I still have one of the original kits which was given to me by Barry Wheeler (then supremo) as I was on No.1 Squadron when they came up to research the kit and I acted as go between from the squadron and the factory.
