Lancia Fulvia HF Monte Carlo 1973

Hello! Hope you gents don't mind if I join in the fun? I build mostly 1/48 aircraft, but dabble in the finer arts of auto and armour on occasion. I saw this GB and thought it might be worth giving it a go.

I have decided to try the 1/43 scale Lancia Fulvia HF Monte Carlo 1973 from Racing 43. As you can see its white metal, a couple of photo etch sheets, vacform glass, and a small decal sheet. I am not very well versed on Rally cars but like the looks of this one, and after doing some research have discovered some interesting facts about Lancia and its history.

I have started by cleaning up some of the heavy seams and getting rid of some spurious chunks of white metal. I hope to have a coat of primer on it today, but with it being a holiday here in the States and the wife planning a neighborly get together I may find myself as errand boy! I'll try to post some ongoing pics as possible.

Cheers!

Geoff

Hi Geoff and welcome aboard, nice choice, and nice to see another 1/43 on the build, sorry to have taken so long to greet you, I've been off forum for a while as my wife is poorly.

Look forward to watching your progress

Well, finally made it back to the build! Sorry for the delay! I've made some progress and have a couple of pics for you.

T-Tango, is this what you were asking about? Elephant footprints?

Here are a couple more photos showing the body. This is coat two, after a initial coat of auto primer. A round of Micro-Mesh was done between coats, now for another! I used a rattle can from Pactra Racing Finish for the color, Racing Red. It seemed to my eye to match up closest with the photos I have found of the Lancia from that time. The flash seems to lighten it up a bit, its actually a little darker than shown.

Rallychef, no worries! I totally understand! Thanks guys for the kind comments, any and all suggestions, comments are welcome. I hope to have a couple more photos tonight!

Got some nice looking builds going, nice work!!

Cheers!

Good to see you back Geoff! I like the colour, as you say the flash has obviously brightened it a bit, but the ex-works car that I mentioned earlier was IIRC a pretty bright red (I had a red Avenger Tiger at the time, & the Wardance red on that was definitely duller & less orange than the Lancia), & (going on 30 year old memories!), would I think look very close to that if it was photo'd using flash!

Looking forward to more progress!

Right then! Back at it after a brief interlude!

I have gotten a little further along since last time, thank goodness! First couple of pics here are following the application of decals. They went down quite nicely, I used Daco Products Strong Decal Setting Solution to get them to settle in and conform to curves. After reviewing some pictures off the web I noticed the side mirror may be incorrectly placed, but at this point I don't want to attempt any surgery to fix it. I'll just have to live with it. The instructions leave a lot to be desired as far as decal placement goes, so I was lucky enough to find a few pictures to use as reference.

Next is the interior. Not quite complete but close! The roll bars gave were a bit fiddly but worked out in the end. Next step is the seat harness for each seat. I've never worked with that type of material so it should be an interesting learning experience! On the wheels I used a small brass wire brush to brighten them up a little. Can't decide to just put a gloss coat over them or paint them. One picture I have shows them as looking a brass/gold color. Anyone have any ideas on this? And one picture shows two different wheels, so that is what I have chosen to do since the kit offer two different styles. The instrument cluster is a decal. I decided to use it mostly to spruce up the black interior.

And a couple more! Sitting on the wheels for effect and admiration!! Notice the blemish on the inside right door. The tape I use on the parts holder stuck and pulled off a chunk of paint. And lastly, after the first coat of Future clear. Since the body is so small I brushed it on. So far, I am pleased with the results!

Cheers!

Well, a little more progress. With the website being down for a few days it gave me no excuse but to get to the bench! Finished with the belts and interior. I was surprised how quickly the belts went together, with a little help from some super glue and a magnifying glass!! Last pic is a littel dark but I included it because you can see the lap belts a little better. The roll bars got in the way of the right seaters shoulder straps but I think it looks okay. The placement of the shoulder straps is purely conjecture on my part since I could not find a interior photo, and my lack of experience with rally cars! Suggestions are welcomed, but I'm afraid they will have to stay where they are!

Cheers!

Here are a few more pictures showing the body with most of the photoetch done. A couple mistakes here and there but overall I am satisfied. Stuck the interior in for a quick idea of how it will look.

Today I finished glueing the windows in, hopefuly tomorrow I can get it almost finished up. These pictures show it before I go the windows in!

She's looking really nice Geoff! As to the belts, going from a 30 year old memory, I think you've got them placed spot on. They would either be mounted there or in the rear seat well. I used to attach my Escort harnesses in the seat well, & remember having a ride in the ex-works Fulvia I mentioned & thinking that having the belts mounted on the rear shelf with less of an angle made them easier to adjust for some reason. But then, as I say that was 30 years ago.....!! (and the guy that then owned it could have moved them!) Having looked at what few references I have, all I can say is that it looked like the drivers didn't use shoulder harnesses at all! (co-drivers seemed to have more sense, they did!)

Looking forward to seeing this one finished

Okay, so it's getting down to the wire! Just a couple of update shots, not quite finished yet. Getting ready to cut the axles to length and fit the wheels, and add the final bits of photo etch. Right now its just sitting on the left side wheels and supported by tweezers on the right for photos. I also have to permanently attach the frame to the body. It should be complete by the end of this week.

Cheers

All finished! I chose to leave off the mud flaps because, in the pictures I found, they seem to be 50/50, on or not. Plus, I couldn't find a definitive shot showing exactly where they were mounted. All in all this was a very enjoyable build, and I appreciate you all humoring me with your kind comments!! Seeing the other fine builds here has got my modeling juices flowing again!

Here are a couple pictures, more will be placed in Parc Ferme`.
