Hi all,

Right I have finally stepped up my game and sorted myself a nice sparkling new 40D (and a big hole in the wallet to boot!!), thankfully though there is still some overdraft in the pot for a new tripod.

The crytearior to meet is the budget of no more than £150 and preferably a Manfrotto (I went weak at the knees when handling one at Jessops), and complete with a very decent head unit that is preferably of an all metal construction, the sole plate on my current pod is plastic and a very big weak point.

So peeps it's over to you, what best for my budget??.

Regards,

JB.

£150 is right on the edge with Manfrotto, when a head is taken into account.

But you can't go wrong with them, superb stuff. You probably can get more for your money with other makes though.

If anyone does a carbon one in your price range then consider it. They are virtually no lighter, but the carbon/epoxy damps vibrations a little better than the aluminium ones.

I bet PHREAK can help, and I'm sure he'll be along in the near future.

rich :frantic: long time Manfrotto user, so a little biased.

Never really considered the benefits of carbon versus aluminium, thanks for the tip Rich.

Hi JB Until recently I struggled with cheap tripods and found that asI am 5feet 11 tall I was stooping over anything of what you might call a normal size. I was recommended the 155 range from Manfroto and now get along fine with no need to bend over. I can have the legs extended with the head fully down and the camera will sit at eye level. I also have the Ball head which is good for models in the photo tent but I suspect this will be a pain at airshows. I can say without any doubt that this has made a difference to my back.

I got it off of ebay for a great price instead of buying new. Best of luck
John

Been saving up for a Manfroto for a couple of year but keep spending it on plastic!

I got a Manfrotto 190PRO tripod and 460MG head from T4 Cameras (care of Phreak) a couple of years ago, they're not cheap but unless you actually lose it, you'll probably won't have to buy another one.

Peeps,

Thank you so much for all the input!!, I will give it mucho thought on the advice of phreak and trigger cos been of the lofty type the height thing is quite imortant to me.

Phreak, I take it you work at a camera type shoppy!! :photo: looks like I bagged my 40D in the nick of time, they have ceased production and the 50D and soon to be 60D are way out of my budget.

JB.

Hi John
You took it correctly!

60D?...... even the Canon reps don't know of it yet let alone the price! It's all supposition I tells ya!
2000D? IDS MkIV?, 1D MkIV?, 1D MkIIIN?....and now the 60D, whatever next??!!
RIP 40D is right though....great camera.

055XPROB is right for you as height is imortant ....dunno why I didn't say that in the first place coz I met you at Hendon!

Phreak,

Ok, I am getting veeeeeeery close now, the tripods sorted but the head is giving me a little trouble, the 486RC2 looks a little to simple, would the 391RC2 be better???.

I like the idea of the traditional pan/tilt system and it's not too many pennies dearer.

JB.

Personally, I'd go for the 486RC2 as it's very quick (one action) to lock the camera into any position (horizontal or vertical). The 391 is really a cheapo video head that can be panned.....I can't remember the last time that I sold one actually!
